Up and down the country, schools, libraries, bookshops and arts centres will offer young readers a chance to meet their favourite authors and illustrators, through a wealth of events from readings, talks and workshops to storytelling sessions and competitions. To kick off the celebrations Children’s Books Ireland is publishing this new edition of BookFest, a free recommended reading guide, produced with the support of publishers and booksellers in Ireland and the UK. BookFest is designed to help you navigate your way through a year’s worth of children’s books, as it maps out the best titles of 2010 (some released in late 2009). Romance, historical novels, picturebooks, poetry, science, humour, adventure, horror… BookFest will take you into all the lands of fiction and non-fiction. The age categories used in this guide are by no means fixed borders and you should feel free to draw your own lines. BookFest is all about great books and, like a good book, we hope you will see it as a special place: a place to discover, to explore, to meet old friends and make new ones. A place to feel inspired, excited or moved. A place to come back to, again and again. Many thanks to the passionate section editors and their teams of reviewers; author and illustrator Kevin Waldron for our brilliant festival image, Kieran Nolan our designer in Oldtown; Antoinette Walker our proofreader extraordinaire; Mary Keogh in Character Print Solutions and of course Jenny Murray, CBI’s administrator 17 North Great George’s Street and miracle-worker. Laureate na nÓg is an exciting new project recognising the role and importance of literature for children. The honour has been established to engage young people with high-quality children’s literature and to underline the importance of children’s literature in our cultural and imaginative life. This unique honour was awarded for the first time on 10 May 2010 to author Siobhán Parkinson. The position of Laureate na nÓg will be held for a period of two years. Speaking about her appointment Siobhán Parkinson said: ‘I am thrilled and honoured to be chosen as the first Laureate na nÓg. I believe that children’s literature lays the foundations of the imaginative life of a people, and that every child deserves to have access to a reading haven – a well-stocked and well-run library in their school and in their community.’ Siobhán is concentrating much of her time as laureate on children’s libraries. She has made moves towards improved library services for youngsters. Laureate na nÓg is an initiative of the Arts Council, with the support of Children’s Books Ireland, the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, and Poetry Ireland. • Year 5 Reading Leaflet
Research has shown that children who read regularly, and are frequently read to, will make significantly more progress than those who do not. We want all of our children to love reading and to read for pleasure. Reading with your child for as little as 10 minutes every day can make an enormous difference and, is there anything nicer than snuggling up with your child to enjoy a great story? Throughout the year we will be planning a range of exciting activities to promote reading. We are also very pleased to announce that we will have two Reading Champions this year! Our link with the poet Paul Cookson will continue and he will again be a regular feature in school. Alongside Paul as Reading Champion this year, we have Tom Palmer who will also be launching our World Cup topic in the summer. We are also pleased to have the fantastic Simon Bartram visiting Key stage 1 this November. In this booklet you will find lots of information and tip tips to help you support your child with their reading. We have included some suggestions of our favourite books from Year 5 over the next few pages and there are some fantastic reads on the list! So, when you can find a minute, pick one and enjoy it with them. Enjoy the information enclosed and thank you for your continued support. Happy reading Mr Hall Assistant Head/English Lead This year we have begun a project to increase our focus in supporting and developing children’s speaking and listening skills.

Reasons why we like to read in bed. It’s warm and comfortable and gives you a relaxing place to sit or lie in peace. It’s quiet. It is a lovely place to just relax with a good book. There’s no little sister to bug you and once you’re finished you can go to sleep. You can relax with no distractions. It helps me calm down after a busy day. It’s cozy and comfy and I’m not disturbed by my younger brother and sister. It is private and peaceful. It’s a relaxing place to read and it’s quiet so you can concentrate. It’s very soothing before I go to sleep and more exciting than playing a computer game before bed. I like to read at the beach because it’s nice and quiet and you can hear the tide and you are getting some sun while you read! I like to read on my sofa because it is I like to read on a plane because it very cosy and warm is quiet and, if you’re on it for a and I can get into long time, it is good to do books sitting on it. something instead of being bored. Or you could read a book in the garden. If it’s a good day, then you might as well make the most of it, but if it’s raining then I prefer to be warm and comfortable, safely inside! You can hear the birds chirping and it is peaceful.
