  • Yao Ming Biography from Current Biography International Yearbook
Yao Ming Biography from Current Biography International Yearbook (2002) Copyright (c) by The H. W. Wilson Company. All rights reserved. In his youth, the Chinese basketball player Yao Ming was once described as a "crane towering among a flock of chickens," Lee Chyen Yee wrote for Reuters (September 7, 2000). The only child of two retired professional basketball stars who played in the 1970s, Yao has towered over most of the adults in his life since elementary school. His adult height of seven feet five inches, coupled with his natural athleticism, has made him the best basketball player in his native China. Li Yaomin, the manager of Yao's Chinese team, the Shanghai Sharks, compared him to America's basketball icon: "America has Michael Jordan," he told Ching-Ching Ni for the Los Angeles Times (June 13, 2002), "and China has Yao Ming." In Yao's case, extraordinary height is matched with the grace and agility of a much smaller man. An Associated Press article, posted on ESPN.com (May 1, 2002), called Yao a "giant with an air of mystery to him, a player who's been raved about since the 2000 Olympics." Yao, who was eager to play in the United States, was the number-one pick in the 2002 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft; after complex negotiations with the Chinese government and the China Basketball Association (CBA), Yao was signed to the Houston Rockets in October 2002. Yao Ming was born on September 12, 1980 in Shanghai, China. His father, Zhiyuan, is six feet 10 inches and played center for a team in Shanghai, while his mother, Fang Fengdi, was the captain of the Chinese national women's basketball team and was considered by many to have been one of the greatest women's centers of all time.

CHINA DAILY THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2012 olympics 5 off track ... TALKING TO HERSELF Two-time beach volleyball gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings has found a way to keep herself from overthink- ing during her matches. “You have to give your brain another job to do,” she said after advancing to her third straight Olympic gold medal game. And what is that job? “I spell ‘pass’ 20 million times a day,” she said. “P-A-S-S. Right when they’re getting ready to serve.” BETTER LATE THAN NEVER Britain’s military has started pulling back personnel from the Olympics Park after a private security contractor made good on its numbers. Although G4S failed to provide some 10,000 workers it was contracted for, it is now sending more than 7,000 workers to Olympic venues each day. G4S spokesman Adam Mynott told AP: “It’s gone as well as it could given our revised position.” The Ministry of Defense says because of the develop- ment, some military personnel have been put on standby. Although there have been a few issues — guards turning up at the wrong place or minor skirmishes — G4S says the security operation has gone smoothly. But, Mynott said: “Given it’s not quite over yet, it’s still a crossing-your- fi ngers exercise.” IT’S ALL FOR THE LADIES A gold medal brings pride to a nation and satisfaction to the athlete who worked so hard to achieve it. Article Racial Upside: Deconstructing the 'Merits' of Jeremy Lin's NBA Contract Stewart Chang This Article disputes the common misperception that sports are a colorblind meritocracy that should serve as a model for the rest of society. The capacity of players to break into and succeed in professional sports is believed to be based purely on merit, with no consideration of race. Controversies that surfaced around the rise of professional basketball player Jeremy Lin, an Asian American not expected to succeed in a sport dominated by blacks and whites, challenged this popularly-held notion. This Article argues, not in a derisive way, that Lin's ability to secure a lucrative $28.8 million contract, originally with the Houston Rockets and recently traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, was not purely based on merit, but was based on race. Expanding upon Nancy Leong's theory of racial capitalism and Justice O'Connor's business diversity rationale in Grutter v.

  • DONNIE NELSON One of the Most Respected Minds in the NBA
DONNIE NELSON One of the most respected minds in the NBA, Donnie Nelson is involved in every aspect of the Mavericks basketball operations. Nelson, who owns 29 years of NBA experience, came to Dallas on Jan. 2, 1998, after three seasons as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns. Nelson was instrumental in rebuilding a team that suffered a decade-long playoff drought into a perennial playoff team and championship contender. Under Nelson, the Mavericks have won 63.3% (801-464) of their games with three 60+ win seasons, including a franchise-record 67-win season in 2007, which tied for the sixth-best record in NBA history. The Mavericks are also one of only six NBA franchises to win 60 games or more three times in a five- year span. During his tenure, the Mavericks have made the playoffs in 13 of the last 14 seasons, been to the Western Conference Finals three times, advanced to the NBA Finals twice, captured their first Division title in 20 years in 2007 and won their first World Championship in 2011. Nelson successfully coached the Mavericks while his father and former head coach, Don Nelson, was recovering from cancer surgery in 2000-01. Donnie led the team to a 15-8 record while serving as head coach. He was the top assistant to his father at Golden State, where he served the organization a total of eight seasons (1986-94). Nelson was also a regional scout for the Milwaukee Bucks for two seasons (1984-86). From 1990-2006, Nelson served as an assistant coach for the Lithuanian National Team.
