Sources said the helicopter took off from Orange County, where Bryant lived. BREAKING NEWS Kobe Bryant, four others killed in helicopter crash in Calabasas The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. near Las Virgenes Road, south of Agoura Road, according to a watch commander for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Four others on board also died. CALIFORNIA Kobe Bryant, four others killed in helicopter crash in Calabasas Bryant excelled at Lower Merion High in Ardmore, Pa., near Philadelphia, winning numerous national awards as a senior before announcing his intention to skip college and enter the NBA draft. He was selected 13th overall by Charlotte in 1996, but the Lakers had already worked out a deal with the Hornets to acquire Bryant before his selection. Bryant impressed Lakers General Manager Jerry West during a pre-draft workout session in Los Angeles. Less than three weeks later, the Lakers traded starting center Vlade Divac to the Hornets in exchange for Bryant’s rights. Bryant, whose favorite team growing up was the Lakers, had to have his parents co-sign his NBA contract because he was 17 years old. The 6-foot-6 guard made his pro debut in the 1996-97 season opener against Minnesota; at the time he was the youngest player ever to appear in an NBA game. -

Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era. -

Elite Basketball Development in the People's Republic
Focus: China Journal of Sport and Social Issues 34(1) 4 –28 Policy Transfer and Learning © 2010 SAGE Publications Reprints and permission: http://www. From the West: Elite sagepub.com/journalsPermissions.nav DOI: 10.1177/0193723509358971 Basketball Development in http://jss.sagepub.com the People’s Republic of China Barrie Houlihan,1 Tien-Chin Tan,2 and Mick Green1 Abstract The article examines the engagement of the People’s Republic of China with global sport using basketball as an example. Following a discussion of the priority given to national elite team sport success in contemporary China, the article explores the range of mechanisms that facilitate sport globalization and focuses particularly on evaluating the utility of the concepts of policy transfer and lesson drawing. The examination of the concepts is achieved through the exploration of a series of questions relating to recent developments in basketball in China, including how the need for reform of the domestic system was recognized and articulated, who was instrumental in transferring policy, which countries were identified as suitable exemplars, and which policies were transferred. The article draws on data collected from a number of sources, including official government documents, news media, and a series of interviews with Chinese officials from key governmental organizations. The article concludes that the concepts of policy transfer and lesson drawing provide significant insight into the process of China’s engagement in basketball, and identifies a series of tensions arising from the process that affect contemporary sport policy. Comparison of the Current Situation of China and the United States Sports Brokerage Industry
2020 3rd International Conference on Economic Management and Green Development (ICEMGD 2020) Comparison of the Current Situation of China and the United States Sports Brokerage Industry Song Shuang1, a, * 1China Basketball College, Beijing Sport University, Xinxi Rd,No.48, Beijing, China [email protected] *corresponding author Keywords: sports brokerage industry, China-US comparison, athlete brokerage, policy suggestion Abstract: By comparing the current status of the development of sports brokerage in China and the United States, this paper displays the common issues, addresses the existed short comes of China’s sports brokerage, and gives some advices. This paper mainly compares three aspects, the industry itself, athlete brokers, and relevant commercial events. From the perspective of the industry itself, the Chinese sports brokerage industry has relatively low requirements on the education qualifications of employees, training attaches importance to theory rather than practice, and the qualification certification mechanism is not yet complete. In terms of policies and laws, China has not yet made national unified legislation on sports brokerage. As for the scope of business, the business content only stays on some of the most basic and primitive brokerage forms and does not connect well with other industries. From the perspective of athlete brokerage, the transfer of Chinese players is still government-led and the market is less liquid. The professionalization of athletes under the national system is not complete. Athletes develop their own intangible assets through the brokerage industry, which often conflicts with the interests of the overall economic development of their units. From the perspective of commercial events, the current number of commercial events in China is increasing, and the events involved are more extensive, but the number of events operated through the domestic brokerage industry is still small. -
Yao Ming Biography from Current Biography International Yearbook
Yao Ming Biography from Current Biography International Yearbook (2002) Copyright (c) by The H. W. Wilson Company. All rights reserved. In his youth, the Chinese basketball player Yao Ming was once described as a "crane towering among a flock of chickens," Lee Chyen Yee wrote for Reuters (September 7, 2000). The only child of two retired professional basketball stars who played in the 1970s, Yao has towered over most of the adults in his life since elementary school. His adult height of seven feet five inches, coupled with his natural athleticism, has made him the best basketball player in his native China. Li Yaomin, the manager of Yao's Chinese team, the Shanghai Sharks, compared him to America's basketball icon: "America has Michael Jordan," he told Ching-Ching Ni for the Los Angeles Times (June 13, 2002), "and China has Yao Ming." In Yao's case, extraordinary height is matched with the grace and agility of a much smaller man. An Associated Press article, posted on ESPN.com (May 1, 2002), called Yao a "giant with an air of mystery to him, a player who's been raved about since the 2000 Olympics." Yao, who was eager to play in the United States, was the number-one pick in the 2002 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft; after complex negotiations with the Chinese government and the China Basketball Association (CBA), Yao was signed to the Houston Rockets in October 2002. Yao Ming was born on September 12, 1980 in Shanghai, China. His father, Zhiyuan, is six feet 10 inches and played center for a team in Shanghai, while his mother, Fang Fengdi, was the captain of the Chinese national women's basketball team and was considered by many to have been one of the greatest women's centers of all time. -
