  • Ireland and Latin America: a Cultural History
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2010 Ireland and Latin America: a cultural history Murray, Edmundo Abstract: According to Declan Kiberd, “postcolonial writing does not begin only when the occupier withdraws: rather it is initiated at that very moment when a native writer formulates a text committed to cultural resistance.” The Irish in Latin America – a continent emerging from indigenous cultures, colonisation, and migrations – may be regarded as colonised in Ireland and as colonisers in their new home. They are a counterexample to the standard pattern of identities in the major English-speaking destinations of the Irish Diaspora. Using literary sources, the press, correspondence, music, sports, and other cultural representations, in this thesis I search the attitudes and shared values signifying identities among the immigrants and their families. Their fragmentary and wide-ranging cultures provide a rich context to study the protean process of adaptation to, or rejection of, the new countries. Evolving from oppressed to oppressors, the Irish in Latin America swiftly became ingleses. Subsequently, in order to join the local middle classes they became vaqueros, llaneros, huasos, and gauchos so they could show signs of their effective integration to the native culture, as seen by the Latin American elites. Eventually, some Irish groups separated from the English mainstream culture and shaped their own community negotiating among Irishness, Englishness, and local identities in Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, Cuba, and other places in the region. These identities were not only unmoored in the emigrants’ minds but also manoeuvred by the political needs of community and religious leaders.

  • War Photography: Díaz & Spencer's Coverage of the War of the Pacific
FOTOCINEMA, nº 22 (2021) E-ISSN: 2172-0150 | | War Photography: Díaz & Spencer’s coverage of the War of the Pacific (1879-1883) La fotografía bélica: la cobertura de la guerra del Pacífico (1879 – 1883) de Díaz & Spencer Candela Marini MSOE University, EE.UU. [email protected] http://orcid.org/0000-0002-8171-865X Abstract: In the study of 19th-century Latin American photography, the photographic capture of war and military operations has implicitly been equated with the eye of national states, understanding that photographers would want to show a positive portrayal of the military forces. However, war photography as a language of state power was not the point of departure. In most of the earlier examples of war photography, it was private photographers who first ventured into military conflicts almost as soon as the new visual technology was made available. They saw war as both an important historical event and a commercial opportunity. Experiencing with a technology that forced them to produce images of war stripped of battle action while trying to capitalize on the diverse interests in these conflicts, most photographers offered a rendering of war of ambiguous political meanings. In this essay, I argue that the photographs of the War of the Pacific taken by the studio Díaz & Spencer are one of the first examples of the successful use of war photography for nation-building purposes, that is, as national propaganda. Photographers had the challenge to create impressive, apologetic and heroic captures of the military forces, and Díaz & Spencer succeeded in creating a visual narrative congruent with Chilean official discourses, consolidating, rather than challenging, the Chilean state view of the war.

As fishmeal industrialists raided the oceans for proteins to nourish chickens, hogs, and farmed fish, the global “race for fish” was marked by the clash of humanitarian goals and business interests over whether the fish should be used to ameliorate malnutrition in the developing world or extracted and their nutrients exported as mass commodities, at greater profit, as a building block for the food chain in the global North.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original subm itted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

  • Naval Presence: the Cruiser Esmeralda in Panama
A Global Forum for Naval Historical Scholarship International Journal of Naval History Volume 1 Number 1 April 2002 Naval Presence: The Cruiser Esmeralda in Panama Captain Carlos Tromben, Chilean Navy (Ret.) On 10 April 1885 The cruiser Esmeralda left Valparaíso for Panama. After loading coal at Callao it arrived at her destination on 28 April. There, the ship would carry out a task that is little known in Chilean historiography[1]. No concrete information has been found detailing the reasons for the mission assigned, except what has been written by her captain Juan Esteban López Lermanda. In his book Recuerdos sobre la Guerra del Pacífico[2] he tells us that he was called to the office of the President of Chile Domingo Santa María González. Waiting in the presidential office was the Minister of Foreign Relations Luis Aldunate who told him that “ the government has had some powerful reasons to pick you to carry on a delicate mission which has been communicated to you and now you are to carry on the mission.” These orders meant that he was being recalled to active duty after being relieved of the command of the ironclad Blanco Encalada during the War of the Pacific, which had ended a few years before. López does not tell us what the mission was and neither does he tell us how he carried it out. This may be due to the fact that his book was intended to explain his role during the War of the Pacific and the unjust reasons why he was relieved. Another officer who has mentioned the incident was then Commander Alberto Silva Palma,[3] later a Rear Admiral.

"Peronism" was thus resisted by the landed elite of the Rural Society and other conservative organisations. Although the Irish community in Argentina has been frequently depicted as being part of the landowning "estancieros", several Irish names can be identified among the supporters of Perón. Introduction The Irish in Argentina have always been committed to the social interests of their receiving community. At all times they have been motivated to bring about their efforts, skills and dedication, and to involve in diverse organisations created through the Argentine history.
