    Isle of Wight Parks, Gardens & Other Designed Landscapes Historic Environment Action Plan Isle of Wight Gardens Trust: March 2015 2 Foreword The Isle of Wight landscape is recognised as a source of inspiration for the picturesque movement in tourism, art, literature and taste from the late 18th century but the particular significance of designed landscapes (parks and gardens) in this cultural movement is perhaps less widely appreciated. Evidence for ‘picturesque gardens’ still survives on the ground, particularly in the Undercliff. There is also evidence for many other types of designed landscapes including early gardens, landscape parks, 19th century town and suburban gardens and gardens of more recent date. In the 19th century the variety of the Island’s topography and the richness of its scenery, ranging from gentle cultivated landscapes to the picturesque and the sublime with views over both land and sea, resulted in the Isle of Wight being referred to as the ‘Garden of England’ or ‘Garden Isle’. Designed landscapes of all types have played a significant part in shaping the Island’s overall landscape character to the present day even where surviving design elements are fragmentary. Equally, it can be seen that various natural components of the Island’s landscape, in particular downland and coastal scenery, have been key influences on many of the designed landscapes which will be explored in this Historic Environment Action Plan (HEAP). It is therefore fitting that the HEAP is being prepared by the Isle of Wight Gardens Trust as part of the East Wight Landscape Partnership’s Down to the Coast Project, particularly since well over half of all the designed landscapes recorded on the Gardens Trust database fall within or adjacent to the project area.

W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities. Cliveden’s 375 acres are cared for by the National Trust’s Andrew Mudge, who has spent virtually every waking hour of his tenure as Head Gardener perfecting the estate, a fascinating collection of very distinctive authentically planted gardens. Not quite everything is Andrew’s responsibility however, and our horticultural ‘spaces’ include the recently created and award-winning Astor Grill courtyard, a riverside acre by Spring Cottage and the Walled Garden, home to the Profumo Pool and our new Spa which opens in late spring and will complete the Cliveden restoration and refurbishment project. Chewton Glen’s gardens are somewhat more challenging for us in terms of their upkeep although Estate Manager Darren Venables always seems to make light work of the 130 acres.

  • THE ANGLICAN CHURCH in NAILSWORTH an Ancient Chapelry
    THE ANGLICAN CHURCH IN NAILSWORTH By Richard Barton An Ancient Chapelry Of the four Christian communities in Nailsworth the Anglican Church may seem to have the least interesting history. The town has only been a distinct ecclesiastical parish since 1895 and its Grade II parish church is even more recent. The Society of Friends can boast of roots dating back to the mid seventeenth century and Christchurch not only has early Independent roots but its Baptist tradition claims descent from one of the largest rural Baptist meetings in the country. The Former Dominican Priory, just outside the parish boundary, was one of the most influential centres for nineteenth century Roman Catholicism in England. Nailsworth has since mediaeval times been associated with wool and the textile industry for one of the derivations for the Saxon name for the area ‘Naeglesleag Minor’, is ‘wool pasture’, ‘Naegle’ being the Saxon word for a weight of wool and ‘leag’ for a pasture or wood (1). Naeglesleag Minor is recorded in the early eighth century document in which a piece of land was granted by Ethelbald, King of the Southern English, to Wilfred of Worcester, the then diocesan bishop (2). By the time of the Norman conquest the area was held by Godda, Countess of Bologna, the sister of King Edward the Confessor. By the twelfth century the name of the hamlet had evolved into ‘Nailleswurd’ or ‘wool market’ (3). Until relatively recent times we must imagine the area as sparsely populated, thickly wooded valleys. They were gradually phased out from 1990 onwards and none probably still exist in use, especially when counter services were withdrawn from Balmoral, Holyrood and Sandringham.
