First, I use contextual interviews to examine how households currently manage this information. From these interviews, I identify five types of communicative information. I then discuss how these types are created and understood by home inhabitants as a function of contextual locations within the home. The choice of location for a piece of information is important to the functioning of the home, and is highly nuanced. Location helps home inhabitants understand time, ownership and awareness. Finally, I show how this understanding can be applied in design through two case studies in location-based home technology design. This will provide practitioners and designers with a more complete view of information in the home, and a better understanding of how technology embedded within the home can augment communication and coordination of home inhabitants. - iii - Publications Materials, ideas, and figures from this thesis have appeared previously in the following publications: Elliot, K. and Greenberg, S.. Before starting the treatment, it would be very helpful if caregivers know exact injury type. This paper aims to propose a framework on IoT and cloud computing based fall detection scheme using ambient sensors along with voice recording. With the help of voice clip and fall alarm, patient had a feasibility to inform exact injury to hospital. Hospital people will facilitate relevant department services to start quick treatment. With the aim of adopting these technologies, research works, and their outcomes are reported. Publications have been included in this survey if they reported mostly ambient sensor-based monitoring technologies that detect elderly events (e.g., activities of daily living and falls) with the aim of facilitating independent living. An ambient device in itself is not intentionally prepared for localization purposes, but using many of them together and combining the collected data can surpass the devices’ limited individual capabilities.

We evaluated the BioCrystal during a 2- week, in situ multi-method study during which ten users collected over 115 hours of usable data. Users’ comments suggested high utility of such a biofeedback device for self-awareness, stress-management and interpersonal communication. Quantitative data confirmed that the BioCrystal met the criteria of an ambient display, and significantly improved users’ ability to control their stress. INTRODUCTION Emotions are a critical part of human experience, and have a significant impact on all stages of human perception, cognition, and behavior. Emotions directly influence how we perform everyday tasks, interact with each other, learn, work, and even make important decisions (Loewenstein & Lerner, 2003). Emotions, especially negative ones, also affect our physical and mental well-being. With rapidly evolving methods for measuring affective states, it is not surprising that understanding, communicating, and even manipulating emotions are now among the central research topics in the domain of human-computer interaction. Our study is an attempt to contribute to this growing body of research by designing a novel, personal technology that would monitor and signal users’ affective states, enable them to selectively communicate this information to others, and, hopefully, help to manage their affect.

Some well-known examples of such novel information techniques include Ambient Devices’ Stock Orb, Koert van Mensvoort's Datafountain, Violet's Nabaztag, Jafarinami et al.'s Breakaway, Mynatt et al.'s Audio Aura and Digital Family Portrait, Mankoff et al.'s Daylight Display and BusMobile, and Natalie Jeremijenko's Dangling String. Applications such as these, that publish information in a non- intrusive or calm manner are Ambient Information Systems. The 1st International Workshop on the Design and Evaluation of Ambient Information Systems was held in Toronto, Canada, on May 13th 2007, in conjunction with the 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing. The goal of this workshop was to bring researchers together to discuss this domain of growing interest in both pervasive computing and human-computer interaction. This domain is described by mechanisms that are minimally attended and perceivable from outside the range of a person's direct attention, providing pre-attentive processing without being overly distracting. Developing new technologies such as these poses new and difficult challenges. These technologies display information outside of a person's direct attention, which is a space that is not currently well understood, making it difficult to evaluate their effectiveness.
