According to the first, the foundation of Jhajjar town dates back to the period of famous King Harshavardhana1. The second version states that at the time of Muhammad Ghori’s attack on the King Prithvi Raj Chauhan in 1191 A.D., the area of Jhajjar was a deserted forest. There was a village named Malokan in the east of present Jhajjar city, mostly inhabited by Jats who fought bravely to defend the country against Ghoris. After, the truce, one brave Chhajju Jat, resident of Malokan made an appeal to Emperor to rehabilitate the village which was rejected by the angry Emperor and he ordered to rehabilitate it somewhere else, and a village ‘Chhajjunagar’ was established on the west of Malokan bearing the name of the said brave resident which with the passage of time got desecrated to ‘Jhajjar’.

  • Reprint of Hisar District Gazetteer, 1883-84
HARYANA DISTRICT GAZETTEERS ------------------- REPRINT OF HISAR DISTRICT GAZETTEER, 1883-84 GAZETTEERS ORGANISATION REVENUE DEPARTMENT HARYANA CHANDIGARH (INDIA) The Gazetteer was published in 1884 during British regime. 1st Reprint : January, 1999 © GOVERNMENT OF HARYANA Price Rs. Available from : The Controller, Printing and Stationery, Haryana, Chandigarh (India). Printed By : Controller of Printing and Stationery, Government of Haryana, Chandigarh. PREFACE TO REPRINTED EDITION The District Gazetteer is a miniature encyclopaedia and a good guide. It describes all important aspects and features of the district; historical, physical, social, economic and cultural. Officials and other persons desirous of acquainting themselves with the salient features of the district would find a study of the Gazetteer rewarding. It is of immense use for research scholars. The old gazetteers of the State published in the British regime contained very valuable information, which was not wholly re-produced in the revised volume. These gazetteers have gone out of stock and are not easily available. There is a demand for these volumes by research scholars and educationists. As such, the scheme of reprinting of old gazetteers was taken on the initiative of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Haryana. The material available in print for the Gazetteer of this district consisted of the Settlement Reports, notes on certain points supplied by district officers and a draft Gazetteer compiled between 1870 and 1874 by Mr. F. Cunningham, Barrister-at-Law. The draft edition of this Gazetteer was revised by colonels Minchin and Mac-Mohan and Mr. Ogilvie. The gazetteer was compiled under the authority of Punjab Government. It was printed by Shri Ram Das at the Arya Press at Lahore.

  • The Rohtak Distlict Which Forms a Part of Haryana Is Strategically Situated in the Passage from the North-West Through the Delhi Gateway to the Broad Ganga Plain
The Rohtak distlict which forms a part of Haryana is strategically situated in the passage from the north-west through the Delhi gateway to the broad Ganga plain. The routes from Peshawar and Multan to Delhi converge here. This area, as a whole, witnessed some important historical events and movements. Unlike :K.urukshetra which lies to its north, and Delhi which lies 40 miles to its south, Rohtak itself has never been the centre of great and determining events. Nevertheless, lying in an area of much political, activity it could survive and_maintain its identit~ because its inhabitants were virile people. It is not possible to write a connected account of its ancient histor~ because the district, as we know it today, only began to take shape in the early part of the 19th century when the area came under the British. It was in 1912 that the present district with its 4 tahsils was formed. The earliest reference to the area compnslllg the Rohtak district goes back to pre-history. The archaeological finds discovered here suggest traces of the Indus Valley Civilization. Possibly the Harappan people, when pressed by the Aryan immigrants, moved south-eastwards and founded their settlements here for sometime. The region is mentioned later in the Mahabharata as Bahudhanyaka inhabited by the people called Mattamayuraka. Nakula, the Pandava warrior ",I ..advanced on Rohitaka (Rohtak) which was then abundant in horses, cattle and agricultural production. The Yaudheya coinage discovered recently in this region, supports this legend. Rohtak seems to have been the centre and possibly the capital town of the Yaudheya tribe which ruled over a large area extending over what now forms Har~ana, and adjoining tracts of U.P.
