Popular Catholicism is the popular form of Christianity most commonly practiced in the Philippines, and thus the religion to which these Methodists previously belonged. Thek understandings will provide a foundation from which to suggest and present the possibility of the recontextualization of Christianity, as a way to formulate the "Filipinized Church" in the Century, through dialogical and cooperative mission between the Methodist Church and popular Catholicism. This study, thus, represents Christian mission as a particular effort to recontextualize Christianity in the context of an "already-Christianized area" through dialogue and cooperation between a new form of Christianity (e.g. the Methodist Church) and a previously existing form of Christianity (e.g. popular Catholicism). The empirical research for this study demonstrates that all of the Methodist Christians interviewed in Batangas came from popular Catholic backgrounds, which means that they had already experienced popular Catholic religion and culture in theu- lives. However, the research also revealed that these Methodists had different understandings of, and reactions to, popular Catholicism, which affect the way they conceive and practice missions and ministry within the context of popular Catholicism in Batangas. Catholic beliefs and practices in the Philippines were greatly impacted by Spanish colonialism for more than 300 years, and this influence is still seen in the cultiue of popular Catholicism today. Christianity in the Philippines, thus, has been inculturated with colonialism and Filipino indigenous religious influences in forms of popular Catholicism. In this inculturated Christian context, this study suggests a concept of deculturation of Christianity through a critical examination of the culture and inculturated Christianity, in order to get rid of colonial and cultural impacts from Filipino popular Catholicism, and to suggest recontextualization of Christianity which is the purpose of Christian mission in Batangas, Philippines. Consequently, deculturation is a prerequisite for recontextualization of Christianity in this popular Catholic context. Finally, bible study as missional evangelism, social gospel as missional cooperation, and Pentecostalism as missional ecumenism are suggested as the best ways to achieve dialogue and cooperative mission in order to deculturate and recontextualize Christianity in Batangas, Philippines. Different lenses are used to investigate popular Catholicism and its relationship to Methodist mission in this study: religious comparison to examine the foundations of popular Catholicism; examination of religious expression in popular Catholicism compared with Protestantism; and, ethnographical research to explore Methodists' understandings of popular Catholicism. Sumida, History Department What happened in the Philippine Islands between the surrender of Allied forces in May 1942 and MacArthur’s return in October 1944? Existing historiography is fragmentary and incomplete. Memoirs suffer from limited points of view and personal biases. No academic study has examined the Filipino resistance with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. No comprehensive narrative has yet captured the fighting by 260,000 guerrillas in 277 units across the archipelago. This dissertation begins with the political, economic, social and cultural history of Philippine guerrilla warfare. The diverse Islands connected only through kinship networks. The Americans reluctantly held the Islands against rising Japanese imperial interests and Filipino desires for independence and social justice. World War II revealed the inadequacy of MacArthur’s plans to defend the Islands. The General tepidly prepared for guerrilla operations while Filipinos spontaneously rose in armed resistance. After his departure, the chaotic mix of guerrilla groups were left on their own to battle the Japanese and each other. While guerrilla leaders vied for local power, several obtained radios to contact MacArthur and his headquarters sent submarine-delivered agents with supplies and radios that tie these groups into a united framework. MacArthur’s promise to return kept the resistance alive and dependent on the United States. The repercussions for social revolution would be fatal but the Filipinos’ shared sacrifice revitalized national consciousness and created a sense of deserved nationhood. The guerrillas played a key role in enabling MacArthur’s return.

    12 Popular Religion and Festivals The introduction of Roman Catholicism to the New World was part of the colonizing policy of both the Spanish and the Portuguese, but on Latin American soil Christian beliefs and practices came into contact with those of the native Amerindian peoples, and later with those brought by enslaved Africans and their descendants. Latin American Catholicism has consequently absorbed elements of pre-Columbian reli- gious beliefs and practices, giving rise to what is known as “popular” or “folk” Catholicism. Popular Catholicism has blended elements of differ- ent religions, yet it is still a recognizable mutation of traditional Roman Catholicism. In Mexico, for example, Catholic saints are matched up with pre-Columbian deities, as are Christian festivals with indigenous ones. Similarly, popular religion in the Andean countries must be under- stood in its historical and cultural context, since it is heavily influenced by the experience of conquest and the persistence of indigenous beliefs under a Christian guise. In recent years, Catholicism in Latin America has also become synony- mous with Liberation Theology, with its commitment to social change and improvement of the lot of marginal sectors. This radical theology was announced at Medellín, Colombia, in 1968 with a formal declaration of the Church’s identification with the poor. The doctrine’s complexity and diversity make it difficult to define, but the influence of Marxism is apparent, along with that of pioneering social reformers and educators such as the Brazilian Paulo Freire. Liberation Theology’s most famous advocate is the Peruvian priest Gustavo Gutiérrez, whose humble origins sharpened his awareness of social problems.

In the Philippine context, the spectator sport of boxing has grown to be a phenomenon in recent years, perhaps owing to the successive triumphs of contemporary Filipino pugilists in the international boxing scene. This thesis focuses on the case of Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao whose matches bring together contemporary Philippine society into a “ringside community”, a collective united by its support of a single fighter bearing the brunt for the nation. I assert that Pacquiao’s stature has transcended that of the sports realm, as he is constructed as a national (i.e., not just sport) hero. As such, I study this phenomenon in two ways. The first part of my analysis focuses on how a narrative of heroism has been instilled in Philippine society through the active promotion of its past heroes. Inherent to this study’s discussion of the Filipino ringside community and heroism is the notion of the habitus. Defined by Pierre Bourdieu as a set of inculcated dispositions which generate practices and perceptions, “a present past that tends to perpetuate itself into the future by reactivation in similarly structured practices” (Bourdieu, 6), the concept of habitus can be directly applied to how the need for a heroic narrative has been inculcated within Philippine contemporary society.

Having lived in America some 30 E years now I am familiar with how people celebrate Independence here—they have parades, barbecues and in the evening fireworks. When we left the Philippines years ago fireworks were banned in the country. I don’t know how it is today. It would be wonderful if Filipinos celebrated Independence Day similar to or better than the usual parades, picnics, barbecues and some fireworks. Hooded, scythe-carrying skeleton bares its teeth at street market stalls, on magazine covers and t-shirts. The new informal saint gains popularity not only in Mexico but also in Salvador, Guatemala and the United States. At the turn of the 21st century, the cult of Santa Muerte was associated almost exclusively with the world of crime: drug dealers, kidnappers and prosti- tutes. Responsibility for this distorted image of the cult laid mostly with biased articles in everyday newspapers such as La Crónica and Reforma.
