TeachingProgram Artist Visual Arts 2018–2019 Roster Creative Movement Theatre/Storytelling Creative Writing Music Welcome to the Teaching Artist Program! The Teaching Artist Program provides the opportunity for your students to experience a broad range of art forms and innovative arts activities in your classroom and school! Each of the Session Options is designed and presented by a local professional Teaching Artist. The quality of our education programs is directly related to the high caliber and expertise of our Teaching Artists. The arts can be integrated with all areas of curriculum and are proven to enhance student learning. Even when using the arts in limited ways, students are responsive and enthusiastic. Invite a Teaching Artist to your classroom and experience the arts as powerful teaching, learning and motivational tools. u Session Options and Fees The Teaching Artist Program in the Schools is available to all Acadiana schools. While doing so they will make many connections to the science curriculum. (two sessions or short-term residency) Fantastic Fishes (1–5) The magical, marine habitat of coral reefs will be explored, including the Flower Garden Reef 100 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Students will make reef and fish drawings using oil pastel on colored paper. (single session or short-term residency) Georgia O’Keeffe Flowers (1–5) Looking at flowers and studying their parts like Georgia O’Keeffe, students will draw and paint a large Louisiana flower using oil pastel and watercolor. (single session or short-term residency) Leafing Through Autumn (or Spring) (1–5) Following a short discussion on how tree species can be identified by different leaf shapes, students will create a large, colorful leaf using patterns, tissue paper and watercolor. (single session or short- term residency) Monarch Butterflies (1–5) The Monarch butterfly migrates to Mexico each fall, returning to Canada in the spring and sometimes passing through Louisiana. A butterfly will be created using several art techniques. Science concepts about animal life cycles, migration and symmetry will be reinforced. (single session or short-term residency) Slithering Snakes (1–5) Students will learn facts about Louisiana snakes and their habitats. Using the art making skills of drawing and cutting, they will create a snake. In doing so, they will reinforce mathematical concepts of patterning and learn how to create 3-dimensional shapes out of a 2-dimensional sheet of paper. (single session or short-term residency) ARTS PASSPORT TO THE WORLD (1–5) Pick a country from Africa to Japan and learn how different cultures celebrate holidays. From African Masks to Chinese New Year Dragons and Flying Fish, create something unique and learn about world cultures. Length of session will depend on the project picked. (single sessions or short-term residency) amber rhyann bayham A Visit to the Swamp (4–8) We will draw a swamp scene incorporating natural elements including water, trees and creatures. We will list creatures of the swamp with their official species name in English and also in Cajun French. This activity is beneficial to both younger and older children. (single session) All About Me (4–12) Create a collage, divided into six symmetrical squares. Each square will be a way to express who we are through the use of color, texture and pattern. On the back we will label each section with its meaning (emotions, feelings or any desired label to represent oneself). This activity is designed to express feelings positively without the use of words. (single session) An Awakening of the Right Side of the Brain (K–12) Through an observational activity, we will venture into encouraging our right side of the brain to awaken! Students will draw blindly while focusing on an object. This is a great way to begin to understand mindfulness! (single session) Learn as You Grow (4–12) Science + Art = Awesomeness! Using the scientific method, create a personal journal, learning as you grow and growing as you learn! Art truly potentiates one’s ability to learn. While creating a journal, we will also understand its purpose and desired use. (single session) Exploring the Beauty of a Sculpture (9–12) We will utilize the subtractive technique by way of art while painting a well- known and recognized sculpture of the past, for example Greek mythology, while learning about the artist who created the sculpture and analyzing the works. (single session) 3 TeachingProgram Artist 2018–2019 Roster Visual Arts Connie Boustany Easter Egg Dyeing (K–12) Do you know how our Louisiana ancestors dyed Easter eggs one hundred years ago? Students learn the history of egg dyeing through a hands-on demonstration of the dyeing process. Hands-on activities can include wrapping (with fabric and plant parts) or unwrapping pre-boiled dyed Easter eggs (1 per student). Additional materials cost of $5.00 per class of 30. (single session or mini-presentation) French Beading (K–12) French beading techniques were brought to Louisiana from our French ancestors. Hands-on demonstration includes how to string beads onto a wire, how to loop shapes, then finally, how to pull all of the parts together to complete the final project (flowers, leaves, animal, etc.) (single session or short-term residency) Candles Light up our Lives (6–12) This is a demonstration on how to make candles safely.
