But the remainder — the lumber, the timbers, the doors, windows, the duct work — were fashioned on Salt Spring. The construction crew, from labourers through carpenters to electricians to roofers are islanders. While Ken Fetherston, a partner in Swift Construction, acted as job site su• pervisor, Swift points with pride at his foreman, JoeToutant. His contribution to the project was "considerable," said Swift. "Without him, it would have been a lot harder task." Swift gestured to encompass the new building while saying, "This was all done by islanders." With a smile, he added the one ag• gravating note of the effort was Durante who proved to be "cantankerous." Durante, on the other hand, said, "In order to keep on schedule and within the budget, you have to be a s.o.b." Yet despite such differences, both men have remained friends. Durante, for his part, offers nothing but praise for the workmen "who knock• ed themselves out for us." Moby's Marine pub will be undergo• ing minor changes as time goes by to cor• rect problems with the lighting and the acoustics. The Durantes seek artifacts and paraphernalia to show the history of the island for display on the walls of the pub. In addition to the pub, the building contains a convenience store, a laundromat and showers for boaters. They have more plans for the site, Jane Durante explained. Eventually, in addition to a renewed marine service and sales shop, a small shopping centre, focusing on marine activities will be built. They also plan a bed and breakfast facility. iour weekty guide to GULF ISLANDS PROPERTIES PageC2 GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD Wednesday, May 23, 1990 Islands The art of Captain Malcolm Armstrong MOVER Pender artist featured "THE LOCAL MOVING COMPANY" Regular return trips to Ontario.
