S. Bach defy mastery. In this sense, they are like the Scriptures, which give scholars only a license to learn more. In researching the abstraction of Bach’s “Chaconne” from the Partita No. 2 in D Minor for Solo Violin (BWV 1004), I have primarily gained a deeper sense of how vast an achievement it is. I want to thank three professors from my undergraduate years at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, more than twenty years ago. Professor Daniel Rouslin gave me a fresh understanding of the physicality of playing the violin, enabling me to continue my growth as a player to this day. Professor Bruce McIntosh trained me in the techniques of performance practice, helping me understand the influence of dance in performing the “Chaconne.” Professor John Peel trained me in music composition, shifting my approach as a performer more to the point of view of the one who crafted music in the first place. I also want to thank my dissertation supervisor, Professor Mark Coppenger, who trained me in the philosophical tools I needed not only to ground a theory of abstraction appropriately in the literature, but also to strengthen my writing and ministry overall. The first chapter introduces Copland's Piano Quartet in its historical context and considers major influences on his compositional development. The second chapter takes up a pitch-class set approach to the work, emphasizing the role played by the eleven-tone row in determining salient pc sets. Chapter Three re-examines many of these same passages from the viewpoint of tonal referentiality, considering how Copland is able to evoke tonal gestures within a structural context governed by pc-set relationships. The fourth chapter will reflect on the dialectic that is played out in this work between pc-sets and tonal elements, and considers the strengths and weaknesses of various analytical approaches to the work.

Johann Paul von Westhoff's (1656-1705) solo violin works, consisting of Suite pour le violon sans basse continue published in 1683 and Six Suites for Violin Solo in 1696, feature extensive use of multiple stops, which represents a German polyphonic style of the seventeenth- century instrumental music. However, the Six Suites had escaped the public's attention for nearly three hundred years until its rediscovery by the musicologist Peter Várnai in the late twentieth century. This project focuses on polyphonic writing featured in the solo violin works by von Westhoff. In order to fully understand the stylistic traits of this less well-known collection, a brief summary of the composer, Johann Paul Westhoff, and an overview of the historical background of his time is included in this document.

Numerous historians have studied the Civil War and its causes, but this study will use only newspapers to examine what they can show about the causes that eventually led the country to war. Newspapers have long chronicled events in American history, and they offer valuable information about the issues and concerns of their communities. This study begins with an overview of the newspaper coverage of the tariff and territorial issues that began to divide the country in the early decades of the 1800s. The study then moves from the Wilmot Proviso in 1846 to Lincoln’s election in 1860, a period in which sectionalism and disunion increasingly appeared on newspaper pages and the lines of disagreement between the North and the South hardened. The primary sources used in this study were a diverse sampling of articles from newspapers around the country and includes representation from both southern and northern newspapers. Studying these antebellum newspapers offers insight into the political, social, and economic concerns of the day, which can give an indication of how the sectional differences in these areas became so divisive.

    Study Project on the Nature of Perception (1933) The Nature of Perception (1934) MAURICE MERLEAU-PONTY Translated by Forrest Williams Translator's Preface On April 8, 1933, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, who was then teaching at a lycée in Beauvais, applied to the Caisse National des Sciences for a subvention, which he received, to undertake a project of study on the nature of perception. In 1934, he requested a renewal, and submitted an account, which he titled 'The Nature of Perception," of what he had already accomplished and of what he proposed to do next. The renewal request was not granted. Apart from three book reviews and some remarks made at a philosophy conference, La Structure du Comportement, which was completed in 1938 and published in 1942, is generally considered the first evidence of Merleau-Ponty's major philosophical concerns. In a sense, that is so. However, the two earlier texts translated below, relatively short and schematic though they are, may never the less be of interest to students of Merleau-Ponty's philosophy. As can be shown, I think, by a brief analysis of their contents, Merleau-Ponty had ar- ticulated fairly clearly, some four years before the completion of Structure, a number of motifs that proved to be fundamental throughout his intellectual career. Naturally, his ideas were to expand and develop from 1933 to the drafts for Le Visible et l' invisible on 1 2 which he was working at the time of his death in 1961. Therefore, it is also interesting to notice themes of his later work that were not en- visaged at the outset.

Beyond Martha Hyde’s description of the neoclassical impulse as a “metamorphic anachronism,” I propose that it can extend to the following: (1) an opposition (or apposition, as proposed by Marianne Kielian-Gilbert) between specific musical elements, (2) a capitalization on ahistorical aspects of tradition, and (3) a generalization of tradition by placing the predecessor as a special case of a larger phenomenon. The first category is exemplified through chromatic displacement technique in Francis Poulenc and modified dominants in John Ireland, illustrating the coexistence of conventional periodicity with disruptive tonal practices. The second category manifests through non-contemporaneous musical codes, such as the use of musical topics (originally put forth by Leonard Ratner) within a neoclassical framework as points of departure from tradition, or the hypermeasure (proposed by Edward Cone) that capitalizes on Baroque and Romantic-era sequencing. The third category relates to Harold Bloom’s fourth revisionary ratio of a successor de-individuating the predecessor. For example, the generalization of thematic transformation while disregarding thematic character, and the generalization of the asymmetrical Fortspinnung while disregarding metric regularity, are exhibited in the works of Ernst Krenek and Peter Mennin respectively.
