Thus, it was born out of a desire to express aesthetically and therefore more artistically the reality of the ups and downs, highs and lows, hosannas and hallelujahs, of a life lived in faith, that this project has come to fruition. In 2006 my wife Jenna and I had our first child—our daughter Kate. In the early stages of pregnancy, Kate was diagnosed with down-syndrome and some of the significant physical challenges that can come along with it. We knew she had a tough road ahead. So, as we had planned, just a few minutes after she was born, Kate was baptized right there in the delivery room surrounded by doctors, nurses, and grandparents. A few days later, Kate had open-heart surgery. Unfortunately, it was only a couple of days after her surgery that serious complications ensued during her recovery. A few weeks later, on a rainy Sunday morning in March, our beautiful little girl passed away in her baptismal faith as we prayed the Lord’s Prayer over her. It is truly difficult to find the words to express the great impact this loss had on my wife Jenna and me—especially on our faith life. Never before had we felt the pain and brokenness of this life so deeply. And, never before had we experienced the beauty of God’s life-giving grace so intimately. Our understanding, experience, and feeling of baptism, faith, and of daily discipleship was deepened and broadened. Life became both more tragic and more beautiful. We learned to cry louder, and laugh harder. We learned to sing out with all our heart, soul, and strength both the lament of our deepest hosannas as well as the joy and celebration of our highest hallelujahs. It was during the initial time of mourning the loss of Kate that I spent many hours listening to jazz and the gospel blues of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and others. Thus, it was through music, as I viii was mourning the loss of my daughter, that I was brought to the initial steps of learning how to see, hear, feel and express the juxtaposition of beauty in the brokenness—how to desperately cry out the minor notes of anger, loss, and confusion—and yet with the major notes of faith, hope, and love still echoing throughout the melody of my life. Through a deep and intimate connection with this music I began the journey of coming to a greater understanding and appreciation of the aesthetic aspects of discipleship. One that called for artistic sensibilities that

    Study Project on the Nature of Perception (1933) The Nature of Perception (1934) MAURICE MERLEAU-PONTY Translated by Forrest Williams Translator's Preface On April 8, 1933, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, who was then teaching at a lycée in Beauvais, applied to the Caisse National des Sciences for a subvention, which he received, to undertake a project of study on the nature of perception. In 1934, he requested a renewal, and submitted an account, which he titled 'The Nature of Perception," of what he had already accomplished and of what he proposed to do next. The renewal request was not granted. Apart from three book reviews and some remarks made at a philosophy conference, La Structure du Comportement, which was completed in 1938 and published in 1942, is generally considered the first evidence of Merleau-Ponty's major philosophical concerns. In a sense, that is so. However, the two earlier texts translated below, relatively short and schematic though they are, may never the less be of interest to students of Merleau-Ponty's philosophy. As can be shown, I think, by a brief analysis of their contents, Merleau-Ponty had ar- ticulated fairly clearly, some four years before the completion of Structure, a number of motifs that proved to be fundamental throughout his intellectual career. Naturally, his ideas were to expand and develop from 1933 to the drafts for Le Visible et l' invisible on 1 2 which he was working at the time of his death in 1961. Therefore, it is also interesting to notice themes of his later work that were not en- visaged at the outset.

    PhænEx 11, no. 2 (fall/winter 2016): 49-69 © 2016 Anne-Gaëlle Argy On the Uses and Abuses of Nietzsche in Self-Help Literature ANNE-GAËLLE ARGY Friedrich Nietzsche is arguably one of the Western philosophers that authors and coaches of the self-help movement relate to the most. This paper hopes to clarify why that is the case, and to underpin the reasons why academia is so defiant when it comes to acknowledging the usefulness of Nietzsche’s presence in self-help literature.1 Indeed, why are specialists (or long-time readers) of Nietzsche often confused when someone tells them that a self-help book about Nietzsche’s ideas has changed their life, without this person ever having read Nietzsche’s own writings? It has become very clear that self-help literature is an enormous business (see Dolby). It strives to transform any kind of knowledge into ready-made advices and techniques, most of the time dearly sold as books, conferences, workshops, or even private counselling sessions. As the demand for such guides to every personal problem grows, many people from inside as well as outside academia worry about a strong and lasting tendency to betray subtle and complicated knowledge—whether artistic, philosophical, or psychological—by making it marketable. Then again, most professional philosophers agree that their field should not remain the restricted area of academic or trained philosophers, and most recognize that transmission is a key task for those who place philosophy at the core of their life and/or work, thereby stressing that public access to critical thinking is of primary importance.

The inter- pretation interweaves the Note into a larger context of Langer’s philosophical work – primarily in terms of her understanding of the dream as a lower symbolic form, to which the film is compared – as well as in terms of her account of literary arts among which, she suggests, cinema belongs. Langer’s references to Sergei Eisenstein are discussed and their respective concepts of cinema are compared. An implicit political dimension of Langer’s writing on film is emphasized by relating her critique of modern civilization, as sketched in the last chapter of Philosophy in a New Key, to her film aesthetics. At the end of the paper I compare my interpretation of the Note with the one that was offered by Trisha Curran. Key figures in twentieth century philosophy, such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Susanne Langer, wrote essays relating cinema to broader philosophical or aesthetic issues with which they were concerned, in the 1970s and 80s philosophers Stanley Cavell and Gilles Deleuze each wrote major works on the medium, and in the twenty-first century there has been a resurgence of interest in cinema by philosophers in both ‘analytic’ and ‘continental’ traditions. This course will focus on central philosophical issues and questions concerning film without limiting ourselves to the usual topics covered in what has become the contemporary academic ‘philosophy of film’ canon, looking beyond these to the writings of film theorists and filmmakers, and to work in other ‘areas’ of philosophy that bears on issues relating to cinema.

A thorough analysis of Schopenhauer‟s philosophical concepts, theories, and ideas is conducted in order to construct a clear understanding of his worldview and avoid a reductionsitic approach to a holistic philosophy. From this I initiate a novel theoretical groundwork derived from Schopenhauer‟s philosophy that I have termed a “negative psychology”.
