Today’s Game: The Quad Cities River Bandits (affiliate of the ) begin their first half trip to the Eastern Division with the first contest of a three-game series against the Lake County Captains (affiliate of the Cleveland Indians). River Bandits-Captains Season Series in 2018: Overall: Lake County 2, River Bandits 1. At Modern Woodmen Park: Lake County 2 River Bandits 1.

Last Time Out: The River Bandits split a doubleheader with the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. The River Bandits used a five-run fifth inning, in which they sent nine hitters to the plate and tallied six hits, to pull away for a 6-1 victory in the first game. After Clinton scored a run in the first inning, the Bandits battled back to tie the game with an unearned run against Chris Vallimont in the fourth. In the decisive fifth, Ross Adolph’s RBI double put the Bandits on top. Marty Costes added an RBI single to make it 3-1 and a two-RBI base hit by Jeremy Pena pushed the advantage to 5-1. Before the inning ended, Scott Schreiber added a run-scoring single for the final 6-1 margin. In the nightcap, Clinton scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning against starter Brett Daniels. The Bandits scored their only run thanks to an error and a wild pitch in the fifth inning. They put the tying run on base in each of the final two innings, but could not pull closer.

Hansen on the Hill: Starting pitcher Austin Hansen makes his fourth start of the season tonight. Two of his three outings so far have been special. In his season debut, he struck out 11 over 5.0 scoreless innings in Clinton. In his last start, he tossed 5.0 no-hit innings in Peoria.

Home at Last: The River Bandits waited a long time to play their 2019 home opener at Modern Woodmen Park. Their first home game was played 22 days later than anticipated. In the end, the team was forced to move nine home games to other locations around the Midwest League. The team played games in Burlington, Clinton, Cedar Rapids, Appleton, Milwaukee and Peoria before playing at Modern Woodmen Park. The Bandits were the final full-season professional team to play at home this season. The home opener ended in thrilling fashion when catcher Alex Holderbach hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to beat Clinton.

Balancing out Blasts: The River Bandits have only one player on the roster that has hit more than one home run this season. However, 9 of the 13 players with a plate appearance have hit one. Over the last five games, five different players have launched their first long ball of the season.

Great with the Glove: The River Bandits have featured one of the best defenses in Minor League Baseball this season. Through 22 games, the Bandits have committed just 15 errors as a team, the lowest total in Single-Baseball. The River Bandits did commit eight errors in the recent four- game series against Clinton. Lake County has committed 36.

Kings of the K: One year after setting the all-time Minor League Baseball record for in a single season, the River Bandits pitching staff once again is piling up strikeouts in huge numbers. The pitchers making up this season’s staff have combined to whiff 264 opposing hitters through the first 22 games of 2019. The River Bandits own a two lead over Bowling Green at the top of the Midwest League. The Hot Rods have played two more games and pitched 23.2 more innings. The Bandits have struck out 10 or more batters in 18 of 22 games. On Friday, the combination of Cody Deason, Matt Ruppenthal, Humberto Castellanos and Devin Conn combined for a season-high 21 strikeouts.

Finishing in Style: The River Bandits used a 6-4-3 triple play to close their game on April 24 in Peoria. With the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, Edwin Figuera smashed a sharp one-hopper to short that Jeremy Pena gloved and flipped to Trey Dawson at second base. Dawson stepped on the bag, tagged the runner who started the play at second and then fired to first where Scott Schreiber dug out a low throw to end the game. The triple play was the second of the 2019 season in Minor League Baseball and the 16th in team history. The Bandits have turned more triple plays than any other Midwest League franchise.

Early Returns: The 2019 River Bandits are heavily made up of Astros selections from last summer’s draft. 9 of the top 12 draft picks made by the Astros last year are currently in the Quad Cities. Included in that group are third-round pick Jeremy Pena from Maine, fourth-round pick Alex McKenna, fifth-round choice Cody Deason out of Arizona, sixth-round selection R.J. Freure from Pittsburgh, and seventh-round draftee Cesar Salazar from Arizona.

Top Prospects: According to MLB Pipeline’s pre-season rankings of the top 30 players in the Astros farm system, the River Bandits roster features three players who are among that group. Shortstop Jeremy Pena is slotted 27th, outfielder Alex McKenna is 29th and outfielder Ross Adolph is ranked 30th after being acquired in a trade with the New York Mets this winter.
