Although the German-American Bund received extensive press coverage during its existence and monographs of American politics in the 1930's refer to the Bund's activities, there has been no thorough examination of the charge that the Bund was a fifth column organization responsible to German authorities. This six-chapter study traces the Bund's history with an emphasis on determining the motivation of Bundists and the nature of the relationship between the Bund and the Third Reich. The conclusions are twofold. First, the Third Reich repeatedly discouraged the Bundists and attempted to dissociate itself from the Bund. Second, the Bund's commitment to Deutschtum through its endeavors to assist the German nation and the Third Reich contributed to American hatred of National Socialism. 02_EHQ 31/1 articles 30/11/00 1:53 pm Page 101 William Lee Blackwood German Hegemony and the Socialist International’s Place in Interwar European Diplomacy When the guns fell silent on the western front in November 1918, socialism was about to become a governing force throughout Europe. Just six months later, a Czech socialist could marvel at the convocation of an international socialist conference on post- war reconstruction in a Swiss spa, where, across the lake, stood buildings occupied by now-exiled members of the deposed Habsburg ruling class. In May 1923, as Europe’s socialist parties met in Hamburg, Germany, finally to put an end to the war-induced fracturing within their ranks by launching a new organization, the Labour and Socialist International (LSI), the German Communist Party’s main daily published a pull-out flier for posting on factory walls. Bearing the sarcastic title the International of Ministers, it presented to workers a list of forty-one socialists and the national offices held by them in Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Poland, France, Sweden, and Denmark. Commenting on the activities of the LSI, in Paris a Russian Menshevik émigré turned prominent left-wing pundit scoffed at the new International’s executive body, which he sarcastically dubbed ‘the International Socialist Cabinet’, since ‘all of its members were ministers, ex-ministers, or prospec- tive ministers of State’.1 Whether one accepted or rejected its new status, socialism’s virtually overnight transformation from an outsider to a consummate insider at the end of Europe’s first total war provided the most striking measure of the quantum leap into what can aptly be described as Europe’s ‘social democratic moment’.2 Moreover, unlike the period after Europe’s second total war, when many of socialism’s basic postulates became permanently embedded in the post-1945 social-welfare-state con- European History Quarterly Copyright © 2001 SAGE Publications, London, Thousand Oaks, CA and New Delhi, Vol. -

Primarily through loans to build up the economy and diplomatic pressure, the United States and Great Britain helped to maintain an independent Austrian state and prevent an Anschluss or union with Germany from 1918 to 1934. In addition, this study examines the minority of Austrians who opposed an Anschluss . The three main groups of Austrians that supported independence were the Christian Social Party, monarchists, and some industries and industrialists. These Austrian nationalists cooperated with the Americans and British in sustaining an unwilling Austrian nation. Ultimately, the global depression weakened American and British capacity to practice dollar and pound diplomacy, and the popular appeal of Hitler combined with Nazi Germany’s aggression led to the realization of the Anschluss . -

A Festival of Artistic Research (Graz, 5–7 October 2017) Artistic research is currently a much-talked about and highly innovative field of know- ledge creation which combines artistic with academic practice. One of its central features is ambitious artistic experiments exploring musical and other questions, systematically bringing them into dialogue with reflection, analysis and other academic approaches. ARTikulationen, a two-and-a-half day festival of artistic research that has been running under that name since 2016, organised by the Artistic Doctoral School (KWDS) of the Uni- versity of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG), expands the pioneering format deve- loped by Ulf Bästlein and Wolfgang Hattinger in 2010, in which the particular moment of artistic research – namely audible results, which come about through a dynamic between art and scholarship that is rooted in methodology – becomes something the audience can understand and experience. In Alfred Brendel, Georg Friedrich Haas and George Lewis, the festival brings three world- famous and influential personalities and thinkers from the world of music to Graz as key- note speakers. George Lewis will combine his lecture with a version of his piece for soloist and interactive grand piano. The presentations at ARTikulationen encompass many different formats such as keynotes, lecture recitals, guest talks, poster presentations and a round table on practices in artistic research. -

Nazi Party Membership in Canada: A Profile by Jonathan WAGNER* During the Depression a National Socialist movement with two rel atively distinct components developed within Canada's German com munity. A pro-Nazi society, the Deutscher Bund Canada (DBC =German Association of Canada), was established for the so-called V olksdeutsche (Germans who had been born outside the Reich). The Bund held monthly meetings for its members and staged pro-Nazi celebrations such as Hitler birthday parties; it imported and distributed Nazi propaganda materials to Germans and non-Germans alike ; it joined with other indigenous German Canadian organizations and clubs to organize social events and to establish German language schools. The second arm of the Canadian Nazi move ment was a separate Nazi party organization (NSDAP). This group was composed of non-naturalized German Canadians and Reichsdeutsche (Germans born in Germany proper) residing in Canada who had applied for and been accepted into the National Socialist Party. Although frequent contact existed between the NSDAP units and the Bund (the two groups often combined to hold public displays and to promote common causes), efforts were made to keep the memberships separate. Up to the present time little serious effort has been made to deal with the Canadian Nazi movement in general and nothing has been pub lished specifically describing the National Socialist Party here. 1 Part of the reason for this neglect relates to the problem of sources. Most often those Canadian historians who have dabbled in Nazism have stopped their investigations upon exhausting the limited Canadian (mostly English) sources. They have failed to look outside the country to European sources for additional information. -

Francisco University of Washington Abstract Mahler’s Third Symphony and the Languages of Transcendence Megan H. Francisco Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Stephen Rumph Music History A work reaching beyond any of his previous compositional efforts, Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony embodies cultural, political, and philosophical ideals of the Viennese fin-de- siècle generation. Comprising six enormous movements and lasting over ninety minutes, the work stretches the boundaries of symphonic form while simultaneously testing the patience of its listeners. Mahler provided a brief program to accompany his symphony, which begins with creation, moves through inanimate flowers to animals, before finally reaching humanity in the fourth movement. In this movement, Mahler used an excerpt from Friedrich Nietzsche’s Also sprach Zarathustra to introduce spoken language into the symphony. The relationship of music and language plays an integral role in Mahler’s expressive design of the Third Symphony, specifically in his vision of transcendence. Mahler creates a subtle transformation from elevated language (the fourth) to a polytextuality of folksong and onomatopoeia (the fifth) that culminates in the final, transcendent sixth movement. Throughout these last three movements, Mahler incorporates philosophical concepts from Nietzsche and his beloved Arthur Schopenhauer. In studying the treatment of language in these culminating movements, this thesis shows how Nietzsche’s metaphysical philosophies help listeners encounter and transcend Schopenhauer’s Will at the climactic end of the Third Symphony. -

The words of the press show that, starting in 1945, the Christian narrative was the lens through which ‘average’ Germans conceived of their past and present, understanding the Nazi era as well as war guilt in religious terms. These local newspapers indicate that their respective communities made an early attempt to ‘come to terms with the past.’ This phenomenon is explained by the destruction of World War II, varying Allied approaches to German reconstruction, and unique social conditions in the French Zone. The decline of ardent religiosity in German society between 1945 and 1949 was due mostly to increasing Cold War tensions as well as the return of stability and normality. -
