RACING, REGION, AND THE ENVIRONMENT: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN MOTORSPORTS By DANIEL J. SIMONE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2009 1 © 2009 Daniel J. Simone 2 To Michael and Tessa 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A driver fails without the support of a solid team, and I thank my friends, who supported me lap-after-lap. I learned a great deal from my advisor Jack Davis, who when he was not providing helpful feedback on my work, was always willing to toss the baseball around in the park. I must also thank committee members Sean Adams, Betty Smocovitis, Stephen Perz, Paul Ortiz, and Richard Crepeau as well as University of Florida faculty members Michael Bowen, Juliana Barr, Stephen Noll, Joseph Spillane, and Bill Link. I respect them very much and enjoyed working with them during my time in Gainesville. I also owe many thanks to Dr. Julian Pleasants, Director Emeritus of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and I could not have finished my project without the encouragement provided by Roberta Peacock. I also thank the staff of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Finally, I will always be grateful for the support of David Danbom, Claire Strom, Jim Norris, Mark Harvey, and Larry Peterson, my former mentors at North Dakota State University. A call must go out to Tom Schmeh at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Suzanne Wise at the Appalachian State University Stock Car Collection, Mark Steigerwald and Bill Green at the International Motor Racing Resource Center in Watkins Glen, New York, and Joanna Schroeder at the (former) Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC).

  • 50 Years of NASCAR Captures All That Has Made Bill France’S Dream Into a Firm, Big-Money Reality
< mill NASCAR OF NASCAR ■ TP'S FAST, ITS FURIOUS, IT'S SPINE- I tingling, jump-out-of-youn-seat action, a sport created by a fan for the fans, it’s all part of the American dream. Conceived in a hotel room in Daytona, Florida, in 1948, NASCAR is now America’s fastest-growing sport and is fast becoming one of America’s most-watched sports. As crowds flock to see state-of-the-art, 700-horsepower cars powering their way around high-banked ovals, outmaneuvering, outpacing and outthinking each other, NASCAR has passed the half-century mark. 50 Years of NASCAR captures all that has made Bill France’s dream into a firm, big-money reality. It traces the history and the development of the sport through the faces behind the scene who have made the sport such a success and the personalities behind the helmets—the stars that the crowds flock to see. There is also a comprehensive statistics section featuring the results of the Winston Cup series and the all-time leaders in NASCAR’S driving history plus a chronology capturing the highlights of the sport. Packed throughout with dramatic color illustrations, each page is an action-packed celebration of all that has made the sport what it is today. Whether you are a die-hard fan or just an armchair follower of the sport, 50 Years of NASCAR is a must-have addition to the bookshelf of anyone with an interest in the sport. $29.95 USA/ $44.95 CAN THIS IS A CARLTON BOOK ISBN 1 85868 874 4 Copyright © Carlton Books Limited 1998 Project Editor: Chris Hawkes First published 1998 Project Art Editor: Zoe Maggs Reprinted with corrections 1999, 2000 Picture Research: Catherine Costelloe 10 9876 5 4321 Production: Sarah Corteel Design: Graham Curd, Steve Wilson All rights reserved.

  • WHY a HEMI®? HEMI® Milestones
WHY A HEMI®? In 1951, Chrysler Corporation introduced its entry in the post-war horsepower race, a V-8 engine designed with hemispherical combustion chambers. Quickly dubbed the “HEMI®,” its power and efficiency made it an instant favorite for all sorts of motor sport vehicles. Although reluctantly retired in 1959 due to high manufacturing cost, the HEMI design was still unsurpassed. In 1964, NASCAR competition sparked the HEMI’s return, and it has remained available for motor sport use ever since. Now, 50 years after the original, there’s a new HEMI whose efficiency and power make it ideal for today’s needs. HEMI® Milestones A journey through a remarkable engine’s remarkable history... 1939 Chrysler begins design work on first HEMI®, a V-16 for fighter aircraft. 1951 Chrysler stuns automotive world with 180 hp HEMI V-8 engine. 1951 Chrysler New Yorker convertible paces Indianapolis 500 race. 1951 Saratoga first in Stock Car Class; second overall in Carrera Pan-Americana road race. 1951 Briggs Cunningham chooses HEMI engines for his Le Mans race cars. 1952 A special HEMI is tested in a Kurtis Kraft Indy roadster; it’s banned by racing officials as too fast. 1953 Lee Petty’s HEMI Dodge wins five NASCAR races and finishes second in championship points. 1953 Cunningham’s C-4R HEMI wins 12 Hours of Sebring and finishes third at Le Mans. 1953 A Dodge HEMI V-8 breaks 196 stock car records at Bonneville Salt Flats. 1954 A Chrysler HEMI with 4-barrel and dual exhausts makes 235 hp. 1954 Lee Petty wins Daytona Beach race in a Chrysler HEMI.

GOING NATIONAL WHILE STAYING SOUTHERN: STOCK CAR RACING IN AMERICA, 1949-1979 A Dissertation Presented to The Academic Faculty By Ben A. Shackleford In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the History and Sociology of Science and Technology Georgia Institute of Technology December, 2004 GOING NATIONAL WHILE STAYING SOUTHERN: STOCK CAR RACING IN AMERICA, 1949-1979 Approved By Dr. Steven Usselman Dr. Gus Giebelhause Dr. Doug Flamming Dr. Philip Scranton Dr. William Winders Date Approved 22 July 2004 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A work of this scope inevitably draws upon resources outside the individual author. Luckily I have been able to draw upon many interested and willing librarians and archivists while conducting research for this project. I would like to thank Rebecca Lynch, Roger White, Maggie Dennis, Joyce Bedi, at the Smithsonian Institution. Buz McKim at the ISC archives, Betty Carlan at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Staff of the National Automotive History Collection at the Detroit Public Library, and Bonnie Walworth at the Ford Motor Company archives in Dearborn, Michigan. I would also like to thank the Lemelson Center, the Atlanta History Center, the Riddle Foundation and the School of History, Technology and Society at Georgia Tech whose generosity permitted me to work in such a variety of collections. Studying the history of technology often requires technical expertise beyond that available in the classroom. During my experience as a racing mechanic and fabricator I was fortunate to have many very capable teachers who willingly shared their expertise. Among these are my Robert Wagner, Smokey Yunick, Chris Brown, Amos Johnson, Thomas Blam and Franz Blam.

Pontiacs of CENTRAL CALIFORNIA April 2016 NEWSLETTER President’s message th Presidents Letter April 11 , 2016 April is here and the annual Pontiac Show is only several days away. Thank You all for your help and support for this upcoming club event. Please bring your raffle prizes and t-shirt ad monies to the April 11th car club meeting, and turn in to Dave or Paula. Andy will bring us up to date with car show details. If you have not signed up for a particular job for the annual car show, placement of people will be assigned that night. The month of March was the annual Selma swap meet. POCC members did attend and were welcomed with rain showers. I am not quite sure how much money was made, but I know Pontiac stories were told. Also, in March, Judy and Joel set up a cruise and lunch that went well and the weather cooperated great for the convertible cars in attendance. There was good food and fellowship. March 3, Diane and I travelled to Temecula for their annual Rod Run. There were many cars, great food, and beautiful weather. Returning home on Sunday we were met with rain. The rain ceased when coming down the north side of the Grapevine. March 12th was the Hot Rod Coalition Shindig dinner. There were lot of raffle prizes and a very big silent auction. DiCicco’s Italian Restaurant provided the food which was very good. The POCC members were well represented. As you can see, this month was very busy as we March’d on to April! Pontiac History: 1950-1958 The name Catalina was first used on the 1950 Chieftain Series 25/27 hardtop, Pontiac's top of the line model at the time. Originally referred to as 'hard-top convertibles', these vehicles offered pillarless design in the door and window areas, along with the top-grade convertible appointments. The advantage this fixed-roof design offered was its sporty, airy feeling without the expense and drawbacks normally associated with convertibles. With the exception of the 1958 Bonneville, all Pontiac hardtops were designated Catalina from 1950 to 1958. Powered by a flathead straight-8 engine at the time of its debut, it would receive Pontiac's new 287in³ OHV V8 four years later. 1959-1960 For 1959, Pontiac dropped the name Chieftain for its entry level model and renamed it Catalina, while demoting the former top-line Star Chief to mid-line status and expanding the Bonneville nameplate to a full flagship series that included sedans, coupes, convertibles and Safari station wagons. In the lower-priced Catalina line, Pontiac Division advertising placed higher emphasis on the top trimmed two and four door hardtops, convertible and Safari station wagons instead of the pillared two and four door sedan variants despite the fact that the four-door sedan was the bread-and-butter best seller in this line. The Catalina, though it was the lowest-priced full-sized Pontiac, was still a substantial step up from the Chevrolet Impala in trim and appointments and only a short step below the Buick LeSabre and Oldsmobile 88 in trim and appointments but priced about $100 to $200 less.
