  • Literary Experimentation in the Detective Story Genre
FROM POE TO AUSTER: LITERARY EXPERIMENTATION IN THE DETECTIVE STORY GENRE A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Kelly C. Connelly May, 2009 ABSTRACT Two dominating lines of criticism regarding the detective novel have perpetuated the misconception that detective fiction before the 1960s was a static and monolithic form unworthy of critical study. First, critics of the traditional detective story have argued that the formulaic nature of the genre is antithetical to innovation and leaves no room for creative exploration. Second, critics of the postmodern detective novel have argued that the first literary experiments with the genre began only with post-World War II authors such as Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, and Paul Auster. What both sets of critics fail to acknowledge is that the detective fiction genre always has been the locus of a dialectic between formulaic plotting and literary experimentation. In this dissertation, I will examine how each generation of detective story authors has engaged in literary innovation to refresh and renew what has been mistakenly labeled as a sterile and static popular genre. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ii TABLE OF CONTENTS……………………………………………………………………………………………… iii INTRODUCTION ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… vi The “Static” and “Sterile” Detective Story …………… vii The Postmodern as Apotheosis of Experimentation ……………………………………………………………………… x The

  • Ross Macdonald's Environmental Crime Fiction
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of East Anglia digital repository Hard-Boiled Ecologies: Ross Macdonald’s Environmental Crime Fiction Author of eighteen novels and three collections of short stories featuring the acerbic, tough talking private-eye Lew Archer, Ross Macdonald’s position in the annals of great American hardboiled crime writers is unquestioned. Macdonald’s texts provide an equally unflinching glimpse into the violence and depravity of post-war California’s criminal underworld, continuing the tradition of the cynical, urban crime novel popularised by writers such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Punctuated with narratives of domestic crime, childhood trauma, and ancestral dysfunction, Macdonald’s oeuvre offers a bleak vision of American suburbia, one built upon intergenerational violence, oedipal drama and corporate exploitation. Whilst Macdonald’s connection to the traditions of the American hardboiled has been thoroughly examined, what has often been overlooked in the study of his work are the underlying environmental preoccupations that frequently serve as the background to, or context for, crime. This convergence between ecology and criminality takes on greater significance when read in the context of Macdonald’s own involvement in environmental activism. A leading member of the Santa Barbara Citizens for Environmental Defence, in the late 1950s Macdonald became deeply concerned with the damage being inflicted upon Santa Barbara’s delicate coastal wildlife by the influx of oil-well platforms. Following the eventual eruption of one of these platforms in 1969, Macdonald wrote and campaigned passionately for a ‘new politics of ecology’, one that expressed the public’s bourgeoning ‘moral and economic doubts about the American uses of energy’ (Macdonald 1998, 326).

A Hero of Two Times: Erast Fandorin and the Refurbishment of Genre Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Robert Alan Mulcahy, M.A. Graduate Program in Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Helena Goscilo, Advisor John Davidson Yana Hashamova Jessie Labov Copyright by Robert Alan Mulcahy 2013 Abstract This study investigates the popular Adventures of Erast Fandorin series of Boris Akunin, Russia’s best-selling author of detective fiction. With the aid of Mikhail Bakhtin’s concepts of the chronotope and the zone of maximal contact, it addresses questions of genre (in a transnational context), serialization, and the role of zlobodnevnye voprosy (‘current issues’) in historical fiction. My analysis locates Akunin in the history of international detective fiction in order to appraise his contribution not only to the genre but also to modern Russian literature. To account for Akunin’s influential status in his home country, I hypothesize the reasons for the extraordinary success of his works and the cult around the protagonist of the series, as well as the significance of Fandorin’s values for contemporary Russian society. ii Acknowledgements During the entire course of this project I have been tremendously fortunate to have had the intellectual guidance and moral support of my advisor, Dr. Helena Goscilo, whose enormous patience and enduring trust in me helped to ensure that this thesis was eventually written. I would like to profoundly thank Dr. Goscilo for the time and effort she has invested and for the results of our collaboration.

Abstract FROM FALLING BEAMS TO FALLEN SOULS: THE ETHICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE HARD-BOILED DETECTIVE NOVEL by Kevin Chaffee The hard-boiled detective story ushered in a revolution in the mystery story. The older "formal" mystery story saw society as a benevolent, ordering force which the detective restored by catching the murderer, while the hard-boiled mystery portrayed society as corrupt, wild and flawed, and presented an implicit criticism of it. The three best writers of the hard-boiled school, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald, show an ethical progression, a turning outward, from the personal, inwardly focused ethics of Hammett's characters to the outwardly turned moral understanding of Macdonald's hero.

A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY March 1974 Approved by Doctoral Committee _Advisor Dejrartmentxsf Ænglish Graduate SchooV%epresentative BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY (c) 1974 SAMUEL L. GROGG, JR. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED il ABSTRACT Ross Macdonald has stated that his primary goal in writing is to capture the sense of contemporary life. He goes on to point out that the detective form has been the most useful for accomplishing this goal. This study examines Macdonald's use of the popular detective form, and defines how he has made it a singularly appropriate form in which to represent the "sense" of physical and mental life in America's present. The study traces the early development of the de tective form and its ability to mirror cultural attitudes and values, defines Macdonald's narrator-hero Lew Archer in reference to his predecessors and to his own peculiar characterization, and discusses the major themes and subjects of the Archer novels. Macdonald's repeated insistence on the recognition of moral and physical limits, the continuity©f time, and the idea of "wholeness" in everything is the major thrust of the entire Lew Archer series. The study concludes that Macdonald, in the Lew Archer novels, has provided an accurate reflection of America in a time of cultural transition from an agrarian dream to an urban nightmare and beyond.
