Short Trip Report - Southern Israel (Negev Desert) – 15-20 August 2020 Short trip Report - Southern Israel (Negev Desert) – 15-20 August 2020 This is a last minute booked family trip as a replacement for a South Africa Trip (Hluhluwe Imfolozi, Marrick Safari and Kgalagadi TP) after the last one once cancelled (along 2 other) due to the Covid 2019 pandemic. I have booked a hotel for 3 nights in Mitzpe Ramon 2 days ahead to minimize the risk of costly cancellations (after sustaining heavy losses from three cancelled International trips this year) and- later extended by 2 nights in the Be’er Milka area (near Nitzana) in a nice cost effective AirBnB AUG 15 – Was spent driving to Mitzpe Ramon. At night we drove to road 171 and saw herds of Onager, my wife spotted some unidentified rodent and my kids something described as either as fox or a jackel. This is a great road as it leads to nowhere and has very little traffic even in the busy August holidays. AUG 16 – during noon a family of Nubian Ibex was spotted on the road leading to our hotel. At night we went to an organized star gazing activity in the crater area but due to the number of people involved nothing obviously was seen... AUG 17 – drove at night to the Mitzpe Ramon observatory, on the way back we spotted what looked like a Red Fox. Then drove to Ben Gurion’s grave at Sde Boker and did some spotlighting in the Zin valley but alas saw nothing... AUG 18 – went to the Mitzpe Ramon visitor center where again where a group of Nubian Ibex were easily spotted. At night we relocated to the Be’er Milka area which is a much quieter area in terms of the number of tourists. Driving at night road 211 yielded nothing as this road was too busy with traffic but the road from Nitzana to Ezuz yielded Lesser Egyptian Jerboa (Jaculus jaculus) and Cape Hare (Lepus capensis). Lesser Egyptin Jerboa Capre Hare AUG 19 – Repeat the drive from previous night but due to a number of agressive tailgating drivers on the road to Ezuz nonthing could be seen on this road except few small rodents passing the road. On the way back drove into the Kadesh Barne’a road and spotted what looked like a Red Fox. AUG 20 – drive back home... Elad Nachman [email protected].

Wrase Assmann, T., Boutaud, E., Buse, J., Chikatunov, V., Drees, C., Friedman, A.-L.-L., Härdtle, W., Homburg, K., Marcus, T., Renan, I. & Wrase, D. W. 2015. The ground beetle tribe Cyclosomini s. l. in Israel (Coleoptera, Carabidae). Spixiana 38 (1): 49-69. The members of the carabid beetle tribe Cyclosomini s. l. in Israel and adjacent regions (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt) are studied in terms of taxonomy, ecol- ogy (including the traits power of dispersal, especially hind wing development, and phenology), and distribution patterns. Material from museum collections and the authors’ field trips is analysed. The delineation of the tribe Cyclosomini s. l. is discussed and the genus Graphipterus Latreille, 1802 is excluded, but the corsyrine ground beetles are included. An illustrated key is presented for the identification of the species known from the Levantine countries (twelve species from the genera Anaulacus W. S. MacLeay, 1825, Somoplatus Dejean, 1829, Discoptera Semenov, 1889, Tetragonoderus Dejean, 1829, Atlantomasoreus Mateu, 1984 and Masoreus Dejean, 1821; seven species from Israel). A new species from the northern Negev is de- scribed: Atlantomasoreus groneri spec. nov. This species can be differentiated from the two African species of this genus by short antennae, a well-developed gono- subcoxite which is also found in the genus Masoreus, the shape of the pronotum and characters of the aedeagus, especially the large copulatory pieces and the shape of the median lobe.

  • Israel 24Th – 31St March 2019
Israel – March 2019 Simon Boswell Israel 24th – 31st March 2019 Introduction Another year and another spring birding trip, this time to Israel. A classic location to observe spring migration as well as offering the chance of finding scarce desert species. As with previous years this was an independent trip and although I saw a significant number of my target species there were a number that eluded me; many of which are easier to find in the winter, required a bit more time for searching or are easier to connect with using local knowledge. This included Syrian serin, thick-billed lark, Oriental skylark, Temminck’s horned lark, striolated bunting, Sinai rosefinch, Cyprus pied wheatear, Arabian warbler and desert warbler. Having said that 51 ‘lifers’ was a good effort! It was hard to pick out a highlight although the afternoon spent watching 1000’s of Steppe Buzzard heading north was memorable, especially with the supporting cast of eagles, harriers and kites. However, I think the prize has to go to the Pharaoh eagle owl spotlighted in a pumpkin field at Yotvata, quite unexpected and one of the best views I’ve had of any owl species. The diversity of wheatears was special too, including Persian, Finsch’s, white-crowed, mourning, desert and hooded. Along with the birds the country has some spectacular landscapes, especially within the wilder desert regions (Figure 1). Figure 1: Negev Desert March 2019 Literature I made use of several independent trip reports already posted on Cloud Birder (www.cloudbirders.com) and the following books: Gosney, D. (1996) Finding Birds in Israel.

  • Israel Migration Magic 2018
Field Guides Tour Report ISRAEL MIGRATION MAGIC 2018 Mar 14, 2018 to Mar 25, 2018 Doug Gochfeld & local guide For our tour description, itinerary, past triplists, dates, fees, and more, please VISIT OUR TOUR PAGE. During our transit between the northern Negev Desert and Eilat, we made an afternoon stop at HaMeishar Plains in the central Negev. This was a phenomenal taste of desert birding, especially for the time of day, producing elegant Temminck's and subtly beautiful Bar-tailed larks, charismatic Desert Wheatears, and a rather obliging Tawny Pipit, all against the backdrop of an expansive stretch of desert rimmed by rolling desert hills. Photo by guide Doug Gochfeld. This tour was the inaugural Field Guides trip to Israel, at long last. Our thorough exploration of the southern half of the country featured a splendid ten days of breathtaking scenery, good company, and of course, fantastic birds. Birds weren’t the only living things we encountered either, as we had a very nice cross section of the flora and fauna one can see in this ecologically diverse sliver of the world. We started out in Tel Aviv, and from there headed south to our first port of call in the northern Negev Desert, but not before stopping in the very southern reaches of the Judean Hills for a great introduction to the ecology of the region at Har Amasa. The birds on the ground were great, with hordes of Blue Rock Thrushes, a cooperative and close Little Owl, several still lingering Finsch’s Wheatears, Black-eared and Isabelline Wheatears, Masked Shrike, Eastern Orphean and Eastern Subalpine warblers, lots of Spectacled Warblers on territory, and a Long-billed Pipit, all under the canopy of a solid migration of large birds, highlighted by White Storks, Short-toed Snake-Eagles (the powers that be have cut “snake” out of the name, but I daresay keeping it captures the essence of the species much better), and a surprise (Eastern) Imperial Eagle.
