Matti Cones, Cook Award recipient for 2012 Mizpe-Ramon pick-up: 7:00 am Sde-Boker pick-up: 7:30 am Mashabei-Sade pick-up: 8:00 am Architect Matti Kones will take participants to see some interesting projects he has done in Meitar (the realized master plan for the central district of meitar-including run-off water exploitation at the central-RABIN-park, the city library,the natural downtown amphitheater,and a kindergarden) Then, the group will be invited to Hura, where it will meet the Waddi Attir project management, guided by Michael Ben Eli, as well be personally hosted by the mayor of Hura, Dr. Mohammad Al-Nabari, visiting some interesting projects, such as women employment project. Finally, Architect Matti Kones will take participants to see some more projects in the Metrolopline city of Beersheva: the Rehabilitation Center for the physically handicapped, the Community & Spiritual Center the Ethiopian Jews and the Technological College & High School for the Israel Air Force (IAF) Departure time from Beer-Sheva 4pm Tour II: Environmental Education: The Negev Highland as a Man and Biosphere Reservation: Toward a Process of Formulating the Foundation for UNESCO Standards Organizer: Noa Avriel Avni (DSASC) and Hadas Bashan (The Dead Sea Drainage Authority) Mashabei-Sade pick-up: 7:30 am Sde-Boker pick-up: 8:00 am Mizpe-Ramon participants can join the tour later on. The 4 th Conference on Deserts, Drylands & Desertification 2012 November 12-15, 2012 Sede Boqer Campus, Israel The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program is an intergovernmental scientific program aimed to set a scientific basis for the improvement of the relationships between people and their environment globally. Public participation as stakeholders is one of the foundations for maintaining the balance between human short-term interests and long-term existence of healthy ecosystems . The tour will expose us to key issues in Mitzpe Ramon, the Makhtesh and the Negev Highland, headed for a process of formulating the foundation for UNESCO standards Mark in this region. It will include meetings with people in the area who will discuss topics such as: 'living on the edge of landscape reservation' (Sde Boker and Mitzpe Ramon); 'tourism development and nature conservation' in time of decrease in precipitation (the Negev Highland reservation); 'conservation of camel grazing tradition together with nature conservation' (the Bedouin village near Mitzpe Ramon); 'army training area and nature conservation' and 'the influence of private homesteads on the social-ecological system'. Tour III: Afforestation Guide: Itshack Moshe - Deputy Director southern region, K.K.L, Israel’s Forest Service Mizpe-Ramon pick-up: 7:00 am (participants will need to change a bus in Sde Boker) Sde-Boker pick-up: 7:30 am Mashabei-Sade pick-up: 8:00 am This tour is limited to 30 participants The tour will focus on the challenge and various techniques of afforestation and forest management in the semi arid and arid areas of the Negev. Aspects of water harvesting, soil conservation and rehabilitation, long term research and monitoring, drought, urban forestry and seedlings production, will be demonstrated through the tour. * Liman – Water harvesting and monitoring. * Gilat Nursery – Seedlings production for afforestation and urban forestry. * Karkor wadi: water harvesting and afforestation, gully control. * Yatir Forest – Lunch, Afforestation in the Frontier of the Mediterranean, Agriculture, Tourism, Urban forestry. The 4 th Conference on Deserts, Drylands & Desertification 2012 November 12-15, 2012 Sede Boqer Campus, Israel Tour IV: Ecological Tourism in the desert milieu Guided by Eran Doron, Ramat Hanegev Regional Council Mizpe-Ramon pick-up: 7:30 am Sde-Boker pick-up: 8:00 am Mashabei-Sade pick-up: 7:30 am (participants will need to change a bus in Sde Boker) The tour will focus on visits to family farms and other sites and attractions that have integrated sustainable tourism, ecological tourism, agricultural tourism and nature- oriented tourism. The sites we visit will present different ecological facets, such as integration of ecological "green" construction, utilization of natural resources for tourism (with as little harm as possible to the environment), utilization of the means of agricultural production for tourism, etc. At most of the sites we will see existing agriculture that has become a tourism product or a supplementary product. The integration that exists between nature, the desert milieu and the site itself create a unique tourism product that strengthens the site and the entire area. The tour will include food and beverage tasting and a fascinating encounter with the amazing people behind these desert enterprises. Detailed Schedule: ● 08:00 – Depart from the Midrasha ● 08:30-09:30 – Visit at the Carmei Ovdat family farm Carmei Ovdat is a family farm built on the ruins of an ancient Byzantine farm. It contains a vineyard, a winery and guest huts. The owners, Eli and Hanna Yizrael, sell their own home grown produce to guests and visitors. In addition, the farm houses a gallery exhibiting the works of local artists. ● 09:45 – Visit at the Mackman Dunes family farm Mackman Dunes is a brand new farm built in a tourist resort made out of mud, in the midst of sand dunes. The farm features special huts built by Rodney and Tal Hirsch. ● 10:45 – Visit at the Ramat Negev Desert Agri-Research Center The 4 th Conference on Deserts, Drylands & Desertification 2012 November 12-15, 2012 Sede Boqer Campus, Israel This research and development station for new agricultural crops recently opened its doors to tourists. The center enables visitors to learn about the agricultural potential of the Negev and to become familiar with the diverse challenges and methods of coping with growing crops in the desert. ● 11:45 – Shivta farm + a tour of the ancient city of Shivta. The ancient city of Shivta is a Byzantine Nabbatean city preserved under the auspices of the Israel Nature & Parks Authority. Following some light earthquakes, the city was partially destroyed and restored in extensive areas. Adjacent to the ancient city "Colt House" was restored; it used to be the home of a delegation of archaeological diggers and has been turned into a lovely Nabbatean restaurant and an interesting site offering bed & breakfast accommodations. ● 1:00 pm – Stop for lunch at the Khan Be'erotayim Khan Be'erotayim, a desert inn built from local materials, sells desert grown products, conducts camel tours, fieldtrips and other desert-related activities. Situated in the heart of the desert, its construction style and integration of activities on the premises come together to produce one of the perfect ecological tourism attractions. ● 2:00 pm – Tour of Ezuz, Zimmerbus, a blacksmiths, Khan Be'erotayim, Ezuz Café. In the community village of Ezuz you can find an interesting combination of recycled, restored old buildings now being utilized as superb guest lodges. We'll meet the local blacksmith; stop in at the café in the heart of the desert and at a store that sells organic products. ● 2:45 pm – Solar Energy Park in Nitzana The park is an interesting site that introduces the potential of solar energy to groups of school children and tourists. The site includes sophisticated ecological exhibits which enable you, in one short visit, to understand the incredible solar energy potential that exists in the desert. ● 3:45 pm – Beit Had'vash (house of honey) at Kadesh Barnea This small, lovely place sells desert-grown honey products and gives a rather interesting explanation on how honey is produced in the desert. ● 5:15 pm – Kibbutz Revivim touristic sites Tour V: Hydrology and Advanced Water Technologies Prof. Eilon Adar, BIDR The 4 th Conference on Deserts, Drylands & Desertification 2012 November 12-15, 2012 Sede Boqer Campus, Israel Mizpe-Ramon pick-up: 7:30 am Sde-Boker pick-up: 8:00 am Mashabei-Sade pick-up: 7:30 am (participants will need to change a bus in Sde Boker) Advanced technologies to produce and conserve water, as well as advanced agricultural developments in arid areas. Tentative Program: ● 8:00 – 8:30 Gathering, reception & coffee (Sde Boqer) ● 8:30 – 9:15 tour at the desalination research department at the water institute at Sdeh Boqer, Dr. Moshe Herzberg will explain about the research and projects ● 9:15 – 9:45 driving to Kornhill farm (15 Km) ● 9:45 – 10:15 tour at the farm and explanation regarding the gray water systems installed to treat the dairy influent ● 10:15 – 10:30 Drive to Mashabi Sade (10 Km) ● 10:30 – 11:00 tour at the aquaculture farm and explanation of the recycling systems installed ● 11:00 – 11:30 Drive to Ashaleem (20 Km) ● 11:30 – 12:00 visit the R&D department and listen to a talk about the progress they have made ● 12:00 – 12:30 Drive to Ktsiout Desalination plant (20 Km) ● 12:30 – 13:00 Tour at the Ktsiout Desalination plant, explanation from the director ● 13:00 – 13:15 Drive to Nitzana (10 Km) ● 13:15 – 14:00 lunch at Nitzana ● 14:00 – 15:00 Guided tour at the ancient Nitzana site ● 15:00 – 16:00 Drive to Kibbutz Revivim Area- activities Tour VI: Agriculture in Drylands: Modern agriculture and technology under extreme desert conditions (Dead Sea area) Guides: Alon Ben Gal, ARO-Gilat & Naftali Lazarovitch, BIDR The 4 th Conference on Deserts, Drylands & Desertification 2012 November 12-15, 2012 Sede Boqer Campus, Israel Mizpe-Ramon pick-up: 7:00 am (participants will need to change a bus in Sde Boker) Sde-Boker pick-up: 7:30 am Mashabei-Sade pick-up: 7:00 am (participants will need to change a bus in Sde Boker) participants are encouraged to bring a bathing suit The tour will focus on advanced irrigated agriculture in the arid northern Arava and Arad Valleys and will discuss techniques and technologies for coping with stress causing factors including high water demand, salinity and extreme climate conditions.
