    Short trip Report - Southern Israel (Negev Desert) – 15-20 August 2020 This is a last minute booked family trip as a replacement for a South Africa Trip (Hluhluwe Imfolozi, Marrick Safari and Kgalagadi TP) after the last one once cancelled (along 2 other) due to the Covid 2019 pandemic. I have booked a hotel for 3 nights in Mitzpe Ramon 2 days ahead to minimize the risk of costly cancellations (after sustaining heavy losses from three cancelled International trips this year) and- later extended by 2 nights in the Be’er Milka area (near Nitzana) in a nice cost effective AirBnB AUG 15 – Was spent driving to Mitzpe Ramon. At night we drove to road 171 and saw herds of Onager, my wife spotted some unidentified rodent and my kids something described as either as fox or a jackel. This is a great road as it leads to nowhere and has very little traffic even in the busy August holidays. AUG 16 – during noon a family of Nubian Ibex was spotted on the road leading to our hotel. At night we went to an organized star gazing activity in the crater area but due to the number of people involved nothing obviously was seen... AUG 17 – drove at night to the Mitzpe Ramon observatory, on the way back we spotted what looked like a Red Fox. Then drove to Ben Gurion’s grave at Sde Boker and did some spotlighting in the Zin valley but alas saw nothing... AUG 18 – went to the Mitzpe Ramon visitor center where again where a group of Nubian Ibex were easily spotted.

Mon-Thu, June 8 – June 11, 2009 The ISRAEL 15 Vision The ISRAEL 15 Vision aims to place Israel among the fifteen leading countries in terms of quality of life. This vision requires a 'leapfrog' from our present state of development i.e. a significant and continuous improvement in Israel's social and economic performance in comparison to other countries. Our Study Visit will focus on this vision and challenge. The ISRAEL 15 Agenda and Strategy There is no recipe for leapfrogging; it is the result of a virtuous alignment in economic policy, powerful global trends and national leadership. Few countries have leapt including Ireland, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Chile, and Israel (between the 50s- 70s). The common denominator among these countries has been their agenda. They focused on: developing a rich and textured vision; exhausting engines of growth; tapping into unique advantages; improving the capacity for taking decisions and implementing them; benchmarking with other countries; and turning development and growth into a national obsession. Furthermore, leapfrogging requires a top-down process driven by the government, as well as a bottom-up mobilization of the key sectors of society such as mayors and municipal governments, business leaders, nonprofits, philanthropists, career public servants and, in Israel's case, also the world Jewry.     ISRAEL 2015 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Israel is a multiparty parliamentary democracy. Although it has no constitution, the parliament, the unicameral 120-member Knesset, has enacted a series of “Basic Laws” that enumerate fundamental rights. Certain fundamental laws, orders, and regulations legally depend on the existence of a “state of emergency,” which has been in effect since 1948. Under the Basic Laws, the Knesset has the power to dissolve the government and mandate elections. The nationwide Knesset elections in March, considered free and fair, resulted in a coalition government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the security services. (An annex to this report covers human rights in the occupied territories. This report deals with human rights in Israel and the Israeli- occupied Golan Heights.) During the year according to Israeli Security Agency (ISA, also known as Shabak) statistics, Palestinians committed 47 terror attacks (including stabbings, assaults, shootings, projectile and rocket attacks, and attacks by improvised explosive devices (IED) within the Green Line that led to the deaths of five Israelis and one Eritrean, and two stabbing terror attacks committed by Jewish Israelis within the Green Line and not including Jerusalem.     JNF BLUEPRINT NEGEV: 2009 CAMPAIGN UPDATE In the few years since its launch, great strides have been made in JNF’s Blueprint Negev campaign, an initiative to develop the Negev Desert in a sustainable manner and make it home to the next generation of Israel’s residents. In Be’er Sheva: More than $30 million has already been invested in a city that dates back to the time of Abraham. For years Be’er Sheva was an economically depressed and forgotten city. Enough of a difference has been made to date that private developers have taken notice and begun to invest their own money. New apartment buildings have risen, with terraces facing the riverbed that in the past would have looked away. A slew of single family homes have sprung up, and more are planned. Attracted by the River Walk, the biggest mall in Israel and the first “green” one in the country is Be’er Sheva River Park being built by The Lahav Group, a private enterprise, and will contribute to the city’s communal life and all segments of the population. The old Turkish city is undergoing a renaissance, with gaslights flanking the refurbished cobblestone streets and new restaurants, galleries and stores opening. This year, the municipality of Be’er Sheva is investing millions of dollars to renovate the Old City streets and support weekly cultural events and activities. And the Israeli government just announced nearly $40 million to the River Park over the next seven years. Serious headway has been made on the 1,700-acre Be’er Sheva River Park, a central park and waterfront district that is already transforming the city.

    West Nile virus (WNV) activity in humans and mosquitos Updated for 28/11/2016 In the following report, a human case patient who is defined as "suspected" refers to a patient whose lab test results indicate a possibility of infection with WNV, and a human case patient who is defined as "confirmed" refers to a patient whose lab test results show a definite infection with WNV. The final definition status of a patient who initially was diagnosed as "suspected" may be changed to "confirmed" due to additional lab test results that were obtained over time.   • Three Conquests of Canaan
    ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

    YEP Field Trip 2017 Israel Technology Tour Itinerary YEP – Young Engineers’ Panel 5.11.2017 DAY 1 • Pickup (08:30 AM): Eilat airport and north beach hotel. • Ramon Crater: The world’s largest erosion crater (makhtesh). A landform unique to Israel, Egypt and Sinai desert, it is a large erosion cirque, created 220 million years ago when oceans covered the area. The Ramon Crater measures 40 km in length and between 2 and 10km in width, shaped like a long heart, and forms Israel’s largest national park, the Ramon Nature Reserve. • Ramon Visitors Center, located on the edge of Makhtesh Ramon is overlooking the Crater. It displays the geography, geology, flora, fauna and history of the region from prehistoric to modern times. A film explains how the Makhtesh was formed and a three-dimensional interactive model helps bring home an understanding of the topography of this unique region. • Sde Boker kibbutz is famous as the home of David Ben Gurion, Israel’s first Prime Minister whose home is now a museum open to the public, and is the feature of a number of supporting exhibits in the kibbutz. Sde Boker is a community founded in 1952 by a number of pioneering families who were later joined by Ben Gurion after an interesting encounter.     Hadashot Arkeologiyot— Excavations ans Surveys in Israel 125 KAFR KANNA (JEBEL KHUWWEIKHA): IRON II, LATE HELLENISTIC AND ROMAN REMAINS YARDENNA ALEXANDRE INTRODUCTION A salvage excavation was carried out in November 2006 prior to construction on the lower western slope of Jebel Khuwweikha (‘the weak’ or ‘perforated’ hill), a soft, chalky limestone hill rising to the east of the village nucleus of Kafr Kanna in the Lower Galilee (map ref. NIG 232700/739025, OIG 182700/239025; hilltop elevation 350 m asl; Fig. 1:a).1 The site, at an altitude of c. 300 m asl, afforded some protection, although not qualifying as a naturally fortified spot. The moderate slopes were amenable to olive and fruit cultivation, as well as to goat and sheep grazing, whilst fertile agricultural lands were accessible c. 1 km to the north, in the Tur‘an/Bet Rimon Valley. This valley was traversed by the ancient east–west road connecting ‘Akko and Tiberias. The nearest fresh water source, a spring (known as “Kanna spring”), is found south of the village nucleus, about 900 m southeast of, and 80 m lower than, the site (at c. 220 m asl), rendering water carrying a tedious chore. The present-day Jebel Khuwweikha senior inhabitants recall the women’s daily trek to the spring to bring water. The local nari and chalky limestone are well suited for quarrying building stones and cutting out rock-hewn agricultural installations and caves. Several surveys and salvage excavations have been carried out over the past twenty years in the village of Kafr Kanna, which sprawls over several hills (Fig.
