Department of Biological Sciences, Sokoto State University, P.M.B 2134, Sokoto State-Nigeria Correspondence email: [email protected] _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT A survey of mycoflora associated with garlic cloves (Allium sativum L.) was conducted in five different markets site in Sokoto metropolis, Sokoto State. A total of 135 garlic (cloves) were collected, isolated and identified based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Result shows that out of these 135 samp1es, six different types of fungal species were isolated and identified. These fungal species includes: Aspergillus niger, Absidia crymbefera, Mucor racemoses, Rhizopus stolonifer, A. flavus, and A. terrus. Among these fungal species, Aspergillus niger was found to have higher frequency of occurrence with 20(24.7%), Absidia crymberfera followed with 18 (22.2%), followed by Mucor racemoses having a frequency of 15 (18.5%), then Rhizopus stolon with 12 (14.8%) which is also followed by A. flavus and A. terrus having appearance of 9(11.1%) and 7(8.6%) respectively. Further research work should be carried out to be able to determine whether these fungi can be transmitted to seedling on the field. It has been used since ages in different civilizations and eras for therapy in diverse conditions. However, somewhere down the lane, its health benefits were forgotten with very few researchers doing studies on it and demonstrating its benefits in various disorders of the cardiovascular, respiratory, central, and peripheral nervous systems including dermatological and reproductive disorders. However, with a boom in the Nutraceutical industry in the past few decades, renewed interest has been generated in this age-old remedy with it becoming a very popular health supplement. This review focuses on the health benefits of this wonder food. It also emphasizes the need to find the right therapeutic dose at which it can be therapeutically beneficial and paves the way for future research. The major constituents of A. atroviolaceum leaves oil were dimethyl trisulfide (59.0%), ethyl linolenate (12.4%), phytol (11.4%) and in bulb oil were methyl methyl thiomethyl disulfide (61.3%), dimethyl trisulfide (15.1%) and methyl allyl disulfide (4.3%). The major constituents of both essential oils are sulfur compounds. Conclusion: The results of the present study can help to increase of our information about composition of an edible herb in Iran. -

Ramps (Allium Tricoccum )
Ramps (allium tricoccum) is a perennial wild leek from the Allium family (onions, leeks) that can be grown in zones 3-8. The leaves are elongated, oval shape that tapers to a point. The leaves disappear as the flower stalk emerges. The flowers are a pinkish white/white and the seed is dispersed close to the mother plant. In the wild, ramps are found in wooded, moist, shaded areas and thrive in rich, moist soil high in organic matter. To cultivate ramps in an herb garden, you can plant direct seed or bulbs. The seed has a dormant, under-developed embryo and requires a warm period followed by a cold period (to simulate a fall planting followed by a winter cold spell). Planting seeds should be done in late summer. Harvesting may take up to seven years! Transplanting bulbs may be the easiest but could take up to 3 years before harvesting if you want to establish the perennial plants. 1 Also remember to mulch to simulate “leaves” falling in the natural environment and also keep the moist environment that ramps love. The bulbs have a pleasant sweet spring onion with a strong garlic-like aroma. Ramps are nutrient dense in vitamins and minerals and one of the first spring plants. For culinary uses, you can substitute ramps in a variety of recipes that you would use for scallions or leeks. Ramps are high in vitamin A and C and minerals selenium and chromium. Medicinal uses could be for colds, croup or a spring tonic to detoxify. Selenium has been studied for its anti-cancer properties. -

Ramps/Wild Leeks Allium Tricoccum
Ramps/Wild Leeks Allium tricoccum Perennial from strongly rooted bulb just beneath soil surface. Seeds disperse; bulbs form horizontal offsets, rooting laterally slowly forming thick attractive colonies. An early spring vegetable. A member of the onion family, with strong garlic-like odor and a pronounced sweet onion/leek flavor. CT native, found in rich moist well-drained uplands, floodplain woods. Presence of ramps signals that original woodland flora is still in intact. Often found with bloodroot, blue cohosh, mayapple, trillium. Pairs of 4-9” x 1.5 - 3.5” glossy smooth-edged elliptical leaves, on short purple or burgundy scallion-like stems. Emerges in early spring. Leaves wither away in early summer. At the same time, on 2-3+ year old plants, 6-10” reddish/pale-green stalks grow, topped with a round 1-2” translucent creamy-white flower cluster, June-July, for about 2 weeks. Shiny hard black seed-fruit matures in fall, often standing through winter. Planting Sites: The more similar to native growing conditions, the better. Well-drained, loose loam, moist, cool soil. Use fresh cover of deciduous leaves as mulch each fall. Part shade to shade, likes dappled sunlight during spring, and enough shade in the summer to keep the soil moist. Irrigate if necessary during dry spells, but not to the point of saturation. Some referenc- es recommend high calcium and magnesium levels. Or, use 6”-high raised beds, amend soil with 2-3” rotted leaves/compost. General Goal: Balance out between harvesting and establishing colony. Harvesting: A 10% harvest once every ten years is the maximum sustainable.
