A Multi-Hyphenate Talent Whose Music Seamlessly Moves Between Genres, Angel Has Already Been One of Britain's Best-Kept Secrets for a Minute A multi-hyphenate talent whose music seamlessly moves between genres, Angel has already been one of Britain's best-kept secrets for a minute. Now, he's part of the ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records family, and his new single "Blessings" is the perfect re-introduction to his unique artistry—a song about being grateful for what you have and where it's brought you, in spite of where you've been amidst an ever-changing world. The musician born Sirach Charles grew up in the Shepherd's Bush area of West London in a "house of music". His father Tendai—a keyboardist who accompanied reggae luminaries such as Bob Marley and Dennis Brown— provided a steady diet of reggae while his mother introduced him to the swirling, sensuous world of 1990s R&B. "My mom would be playing Jodeci, and I was like, 'Let me study this.'" From a young age, he was bitten by the musical bug; he formed a band with the rest of his siblings, the Charles Family, who were signed to Warner Bros. when he was 13. After years of gigging, his brethren called it quits while he persevered in the industry: "My brothers and sisters started doing other things, but I just stayed on it." As Angel, he re-emerged in 2010 with the Patience Is a Virtue mixtape, notched a co-write on Roll Deep's chart-topping "Green Light" and collaborated with fellow UK leading lights like Wiley and Giggs; last year saw the release of his sophomore record Woman, which took his predilection for R&B further than ever before. "It represented me more ways than one," he explains. "The sound, what I'm talking about, the relationships I've had with women in my life, from my mom and my sister to different females. It's about the things that we go through every day with women, and I was putting that out there." After putting out releases on Island Records, Angel parted ways from the label to move to Mark Pitts’ ByStorm Entertainment and RCA Records, and he wrote "Blessings" the week he decided to make the move. "The whole country knew me, but there was still a barrier to how far I could go," he explains regarding the move, and the acoustic, lilting tune reflects the moment when one's perspective shifts while acknowledging the need to find harmony in your own surroundings. "I wasn't thinking what I was saying—I was speaking subconsciously," Angel states regarding the song's positive message and how it came to him in the moment of creation. "What I say matters to me and everyone—in more ways than one. I needed to say something, and I felt like what I was saying mattered— not just to me, but to everyone. It came out from nowhere, but it changed my life." And "Blessings" is sure to change more than a few lives in the process, too, not to mention what he has on the way. Angel's currently in the studio cooking up a new album for release sometime soon, and he's getting ready to continue spreading his positive, forward-thinking message to a whole new audience in the U.S. .

  • Grime + Gentrification
GRIME + GENTRIFICATION In London the streets have a voice, multiple actually, afro beats, drill, Lily Allen, the sounds of the city are just as diverse but unapologetically London as the people who live here, but my sound runs at 140 bpm. When I close my eyes and imagine London I see tower blocks, the concrete isn’t harsh, it’s warm from the sun bouncing off it, almost comforting, council estates are a community, I hear grime, it’s not the prettiest of sounds but when you’ve been raised on it, it’s home. “Grime is not garage Grime is not jungle Grime is not hip-hop and Grime is not ragga. Grime is a mix between all of these with strong, hard hitting lyrics. It's the inner city music scene of London. And is also a lot to do with representing the place you live or have grown up in.” - Olly Thakes, Urban Dictionary Or at least that’s what Urban Dictionary user Olly Thake had to say on the matter back in 2006, and honestly, I couldn’t have put it better myself. Although I personally trust a geezer off of Urban Dictionary more than an out of touch journalist or Good Morning Britain to define what grime is, I understand that Urban Dictionary may not be the most reliable source due to its liberal attitude to users uploading their own definitions with very little screening and that Mr Thake’s definition may also leave you with more questions than answers about what grime actually is and how it came to be.

  • “One Line Flows, Yeah I Got Some of Those”: Genre, Tradition, and the Reception of Rhythmic Regularity in Grime Flow
“ONE LINE FLOWS, YEAH I GOT SOME OF THOSE”: GENRE, TRADITION, AND THE RECEPTION OF RHYTHMIC REGULARITY IN GRIME FLOW Alexander Harvey Marsden A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Music Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Jocelyn R. Neal Allen Anderson Mark Katz © 2017 Alexander Harvey Marsden ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Alexander Harvey Marsden: “One Line Flows, Yeah I Got Some of Those”: Genre, Tradition, and the Reception of Rhythmic Regularity in Grime Flow (Under the direction of Jocelyn Neal) In its musical style and performance practices, the British rap genre grime bears the traces of London’s electronic dance music scene, out of which it emerged in the early 2000s. One such trace is grime’s characteristic style of flow—the rhythmic dimensions of a rapper’s delivery of text—and the role that this plays in encouraging grime’s listeners to move. This thesis argues that grime flow exhibits a tendency towards rhythmic regularity, which differentiates it from flow styles that tend toward irregularity. Drawing from music cognition and music-theoretic work on the pleasures of repetition for listeners, particularly in electronic dance music, it asks what listeners find engaging about grime flow’s regularity. It argues, through an analysis of Skepta’s “That’s Not Me,” that grime flow encourages a participatory mode of listening from its audience, which in turn contributes to a broader orientation towards communality in the genre.

  • Angel Drops the Music Video for His “Blessings (Remix)” Featuring French Montana & Davido
ANGEL DROPS THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR HIS “BLESSINGS (REMIX)” FEATURING FRENCH MONTANA & DAVIDO Photo Credit: Ben Hausdorff (Los Angeles, CA – March 20th, 2020) – Today, London sensation Angel drops the music video for his “Blessings (Remix)” feat. French Montana & Davido via ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records. The video, which features all 3 artists, was shot in Los Angeles and directed by Daps (Migos, DJ Snake) and premiered on Okayafrica this morning. Check it out HERE. Angel says, “I first met Davido in NYC when he recorded the vocals which was so sick to be there because there was no back and forth of sending the vocal. It was a vibe to be in the room when he delivered it and it created a great bond between us. With French, I feel like he took it to a whole other level so it was great to be all together. With all of us on set it felt really organic, and no one was out of place, like three brothers coming together to send a great message to the world. The race is not for the swiftest, but for those that can endure. Blessings.” The track was released earlier this month and was declared a “feel-good banger” by HotNewHipHop. Last summer, Angel announced his signing to Mark Pitts’ ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records and released the original “Blessings” track and video which was Angel’s first U.S. based release.
