Biography The Grateful Dead were an American rock band that formed in 1965 in Northern California. They came to fame as part of author Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, a series of multimedia happenings centered around then-legal LSD. Famed for their concerts, the band performed more than 2,300 shows over thirty years, disbanding after the death of lead guitarist Jerry Garcia in August 1995. -

Introduction In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed, and shared. Founding members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, after incarnations as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks. Despite significant changes in the band’s lineup, including the addition of Mickey Hart and the death of Ron McKernan, the band played together until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead distinguished themselves by their preference for live performance, musical and business creativity, and an unprecedented dedication to their fans. Working musicians rather than rock stars, the Dead developed a distinctive sound while performing as latter-day American troubadours, bringing audio precision to their live performances and the spontaneity of live performances to their studio work. Side-stepping the established rules of the recording industry, the Dead took control of the production and distribution of their music. With a similar business savvy, they introduced strategic marketing innovations that strengthened the bond with their fans. This exhibition, the first extensive presentation of materials from the Grateful Dead Archive housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, testifies to the enduring impact of the Grateful Dead and provides a glimpse into the social upheavals and awakenings of the late twentieth century—a transformative period that profoundly shaped our present cultural landscape. FURTHERING A TRADITION OF GRASSROOTS GIVING SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2007 THE WARFIELD THEATRE SAN FRANCISCO Welcome from the Rex Foundation On December 1, 2001, at the Warfield Theatre, the Rex Foundation launched its renewal with The Healing Power of Music. That night the full house of kindred spirits celebrated the fun of being together, enjoying great music and helping the Rex Foundation continue to fund valued organizations that serve their communities. Thanks to the resounding support over these last 6 years from the entire musical community, individual contributors, corporate sponsors and foundations, the Rex Foundation has distributed $911,000 in grants to 171 programs, along with carrying out new initiatives that foster creativity while also spurring greater awareness about such issues as human rights. Since the first Grateful Dead Rex benefit concert in the spring of 1984, the Rex Foundation has provided $8.2 million in grants to over 1,000 grassroots non-profit programs across the United States and internationally. Tonight, the Rex Foundation once again celebrates at The Warfield, in a hall filled with friends from far and wide. Everyone involved in presenting this event – the musicians and their production team, ticket purchasers, venue staff, in-kind and silent auction contributors, volunteers, event coordination team – has contributed their resources, ingenuity, community spirit and kindness to create this special occasion and support the on-going success of the Rex Foundation. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OCTOBER 2018 30th ANNIVERSARY LIMITED-EDITION RECORD STORE DAY REISSUE OF JERRY GARCIA ACOUSTIC BAND’S 1988 CLASSIC ALMOST ACOUSTIC TO COME OUT ON NOVEMBER 23RD OUT OF PRINT SEMINAL LIVE ALBUM TO BE RELEASED ON CD AND NOW DOUBLE 180 GRAM MARBLED VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME Nashville, TN – 2018 marks the 30th Anniversary of the release of Almost Acoustic, the out of print 1988 live classic from The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. In honor of this milestone Almost Acoustic will receive a special limited-edition reissue for Record Store Day 2018 on November 23rd. The album will be made available on CD and as a double LP on 180-gram vinyl for the first time. The vinyl package will include two green and black marbled LPs with individually numbered foil-stamped gatefold jackets. Only 5000 copies of this limited-edition run will be available. Recorded in 1987 at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles and the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco, Almost Acoustic features Garcia (guitar & vocals) performing with some of his closest pre-Dead friends and collaborators from the early 1960’s – Sandy Rothman (mandolin, dobro & vocals) and David Nelson (guitar & vocals). Joining in were Kenny Kosek (fiddle) and long-time Jerry Garcia Band alums John Kahn (upright bass) and David Kemper (snare drum). Songs include influential folk traditionals, such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, “Blue Yodel #9” and “Diamond Joe”. The album also highlights songs that were consistently woven in and out of Garcia’s career as both a solo artist and with the Grateful Dead, including “Deep Elem Blues”, “Oh, The Wind And Rain” and the Garcia/Hunter classic, “Ripple”. -
