(USDA) “Simplifying Meal Service and Monitoring Requirements in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs” Proposed Rule Dear President Trump and Secretary Perdue, I write in strong opposition to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) “Simplifying Meal Service and Monitoring Requirements in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs” proposed rule. This rule would jeopardize the progress schools have made to provide healthier food to vulnerable children and decrease the overall healthfulness of school meals. Especially in light of COVID-19 and the current state of emergency our country is going through, now more than ever we should be committing ourselves to the health and well-being of our children and supporting, not weakening, science-based nutrition standards. We want our kids to eat healthier foods and have schools reinforce the healthy options we provide our children at home. It’s especially important that children who are facing hunger be able to access fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and continue to learn healthy eating habits at school. The rollback of nutritional standards for school meals threatens the progress we have made to ensure our children receive healthy meals at school. USDA’s own April 2019 study found that thanks to the updated standards instituted by the Obama Administration, the nutritional quality of school meals has significantly increased. This study also shows that school meals have improved children’s diet and health, especially among students coming from food insecure and low- income households. We also fear that this rule change will negatively impact the health of our children, leading to an increased rate of childhood obesity and diabetes. Below you will find the signatures of over 11,100 moms, dads, and concerned community members who back up this message. We ask that you immediately withdraw this proposed rule and instead dedicate your Administration to improving and strengthening the school meal nutrition standards. Sincerely, Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner MomsRising, Co-founder and CEO/Executive Director Bonnie Daniels, Miami, FL Dr. Mary Ann And Frank Graffagnino, Prescott, AZ Andrew Arellano, Lyons, IL Will Hicks, Shreveport, LA Carla Pomeroy, Reynoldsburg, OH John Moon, Sparks, NV Barbara Weinstein, Westwood, MA Ina Clausen, El Cerrito, CA Carla J Taylor, Bend, OR Gary Mengel, Westminster, CO D O, New York, NY Anne Harvey, San Diego, CA Kate Solisti, Lyons, CO Patricia Ann Hegland, Pahrump, NV Pat Wright, Boise, ID Janice Sullivan, Greensboro, NC Allan Richardson, Jacksonville, FL Michael-Leonard Creditor, San Diego, CA Marilyn Clark, Williamsburg, VA David A. The Routledge History of Literature in English ‘Wide-ranging, very accessible . highly attentive to cultural and social change and, above all, to the changing history of the language. An expansive, generous and varied textbook of British literary history . addressed equally to the British and the foreign reader.’ MALCOLM BRADBURY, novelist and critic ‘The writing is lucid and eminently accessible while still allowing for a substantial degree of sophistication. The book wears its learning lightly, conveying a wealth of information without visible effort.’ HANS BERTENS, University of Utrecht This new guide to the main developments in the history of British and Irish literature uniquely charts some of the principal features of literary language development and highlights key language topics. Clearly structured and highly readable, it spans over a thousand years of literary history from AD 600 to the present day. It emphasises the growth of literary writing, its traditions, conventions and changing characteristics, and also includes literature from the margins, both geographical and cultural. Key features of the book are: • An up-to-date guide to the major periods of literature in English in Britain and Ireland • Extensive coverage of post-1945 literature • Language notes spanning AD 600 to the present • Extensive quotations from poetry, prose and drama • A timeline of important historical, political and cultural events • A foreword by novelist and critic Malcolm Bradbury RONALD CARTER is Professor of Modern English Language in the Department of English Studies at the University of Nottingham. Roughly 22 million have sought job- less benefits in the past month — the worst stretch of U.S. job losses on record. It means that roughly one in seven work- ers have lost their jobs in that time. The grim figures point to an econo- my that is tumbling into what appears to be a calamitous recession, the worst in decades. The nation’s output could shrink by roughly 10.5% before it starts to rebound, according to Ryan Sweet, an economist at Moody’s Analytics.
