Is this the mystic East?” Now it’s precisely that betwixt and betweenness that’s most interesting to me.’ The book that came out in October 2010, The Republic of Love: Cultural Intimacy in Turkish Popular Music, demonstrates that interest, bringing together work he has been doing over the past ten years on music, popular culture, and politics. He describes it as ‘an attempt to write a cultural history of Turkey in the 20th century through its music’. Surprisingly, perhaps, it’s not something that’s been done before. Martin describes a kind of ‘cultural embarrassment’ in Turkey in Turkish writing about the kind of popular music he deals with—‘towering, Frank Sinatra- style cultural figures’, who nonetheless are neither traditional classical artists nor edgy contemporary rappers, and so have been neglected by Turkish scholars. Ethnomusicology and Oxford may not seem the likeliest pairing to some, but for Martin himself can hardly be described as Martin Stokes they’re a natural combination.     WILL SONY’S FOURTH PLAYSTATION LEAD TO A SECOND SONY V. UNIVERSAL? † SETH ASCHER ABSTRACT Sony has included a “share” button on the next version of their popular PlayStation video game system. This feature is meant to allow players to record and share videos of their gameplay. This service shares similarities with the controversial “record” button that Sony included with its Betamax players over thirty years ago. The Betamax player was the subject of the landmark case Sony v. Universal, a foundational case for the modern application of copyright law to new technology. This Issue Brief examines how this “share” feature would fare under the framework laid out by Sony v. Universal and other evolutions in copyright law. INTRODUCTION On February 20, 2013, Sony announced their newest videogame system, predictably named the PlayStation 4.1 Chief among its new features is the share button displayed prominently on its controller.2 Microsoft’s newest offering also has a similar feature.3 Pressing the share button will allow a player to post images or videos of their gameplay to the internet, sharing them with their friends and complete strangers.4 The PlayStation 4 even buffers the last few minutes of gameplay so that a player can share their gameplay video after the fact.5 Sony’s intention is to provide an easy way for players to share images and videos online. Film scores demand an extraordinary degree of both musicianship and dramatic understanding on the part of their composers. Whilst creating potent, original music to synchronise exactly with the images, composers are also making that music as discreet, accessible and communicative as possible, so that it can speak to each and every one of us. Demonstrating how Barry incorporated the sounds of east European instruments and even a coffee grinder to capture a down at heel Cold War feel, Neil highlights how a great composer can add a whole new dimension to film.
