The nature and number of jobs is set to change dramatically, as this visionary booklet outlines. In 2015, the Bank of England estimated that up to 15 million jobs in Britain are at risk. Societies with large numbers of jobless are unhappy, dangerous places. Yet schools and universities continue to trot out their twentieth-century, nineteenth even, formulae. Economic revolutions in the past, they say, have always been advantageous; this one will be no different. Ah, but it will be. Very different. Professor David Deming at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research in the USA, has argued convincingly that the very skills prioritised by linear thinking schools and universities are precisely the ones that algorithms are able to perform much quicker, more profoundly and reliably than humans. We need to focus far more, if we are to prepare our young for tomorrow’s economy, and to optimise its infinite possibilities, on active as opposed to passive learning, on technical entrepreneurial skills, on personal and collaborative skills that teach us how to live intelligent and fulfilling lives, and how to work and live harmoniously with others. In the Industrial Revolution the power of steam provided more jobs than were lost by handworkers; the car revolution of the 1890s created more jobs than were lost by the horse and carriage economy; and the silicon revolution of the 1960s and 1970s created more jobs than were lost in simple clerical and administrative work. When I was a Minister for Information Technology in the early Thatcher years I made several speeches on these lines. However, I have now come to a different conclusion and I now think that the Digital Revolution – the Fourth Industrial Revolution – will not follow this pattern. WHY? This is because machines and artificial intelligence play a significant role in enhancing productivity and wealth creation, which directly changes and challenges the role of human beings. The fourth industrial revolution will also intensify globalisation. Therefore, technology will become much more significant, because regions and societies that cope positively with the technological impact of the fourth industrial revolution will have a better economic and social future. This article argues that the EU can play an important role in developing an environment appropriate for the fourth industrial revolution, an environment that is vibrant and open to new technologies. Member states would profit from an EU-wide coordinated framework for this area. The EU has to establish new common policies for the market-oriented diffusion and widespread use of new technologies.     Dear Dr Rodgers I’m writing to apply for the post of President of the University of the Bahamas. For the last five years, I have been Vice Chancellor (ie President) of the University of Buckingham, Britain’s leading private university, and medical school, founded by Margaret Thatcher in the 1970s. She became Chancellor in the 1990s after she ceased to be Prime Minister. Large numbers of Bahamians are alumni of Buckingham, close to 1000. I travelled out to the Bahamas every year or so I was Vice Chancellor, last visiting just after Hurricane Dorian, and have made a large number of friends in the Bahamas. I would relish making a significant impact for good on the country. My experience to date has I believe eQuipped me well to achieve your strategic objectives, including enhancing financial controls and increasing revenue diversity, boosting UG and PG numbers and engagement, and elevating research, community engagement and national/international profile. Two of my referees are Bahamians. One, Sarah Farrington, is an alumna of Buckingham. The other, financier Kiril Sokoloff, who can also speak about my work on AI and digitalisation in higher education, is not an alumnus. The Bahamas is a country where I feel very much at home. In 2015, I founded the “Universities G20“ a group for presidents of some of the world’s leading private/liberal arts universities. The G20 has a strong focus on the United States, allowing me to build on my close knowledge of and friendships with US university leaders. Conglomerates have always played a key role in ASEAN economies, with a contribution by top 40 conglomerates, estimated to be more than 20% of the combined ASEAN GDP in 2015. With the digital revolution reshaping the business world across sectors, conglomerates need to devise effective digital strategies to strengthen their leadership position, or find themselves being challenged by more agile newcomers. The USD 100+ billion opportunity for ASEAN conglomerates “Digital” is a hot topic that has forced businesses to question whether it is a passing trend or a strategic topic of substance. Often, we have observed clients consider “digital” as a silver bullet for devising innovative ways of upgrading the business in search of extra opportunities of growth and value. But there are still questions that are not clearly understood. Is digital all about start-ups or is it relevant to established companies? Is it limited to delivering better customer experiences and efficiencies or for enabling focused targeting of sub-segments? Within the ASEAN context, business leaders are also faced with the challenge of managing the diversity and complexity of multiple markets ranging from a fully developed economy (e.g. Singapore) to a market that is only recently opening up to global practices (e.g. Myanmar). How will the digital economy emerge in different markets of ASEAN given such diversity? These are added complications requiring views on how to localize digital innovations to fit the varying market environments. We believe that business leaders need to start by asking the fundamental question “Does digital matter in ASEAN?” Without conviction in this issue, there will be doubts on whether it is even worth putting the topic on the table.
