Binik Department of Jewish Studies McGill University, Montreal April, 2018 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts © Irving Binik 2018 Abstract Rahab the Canaanite prostitute saves the two spies who were sent by Joshua to reconnoiter Jericho in preparation for the impending Israelite invasion. In recompense for her actions, Rahab and her family are saved from the destruction of Jericho and are allowed to live among the Israelites. This thesis investigates the history of interpretation of the Rahab story from antiquity to medieval times focusing on textual, narrative and moral issues. It is argued that an important theme in the history of interpretation of the Rahab story is its message of inclusiveness. Le résumé Rahab, la prostituée Cananéenne, sauve la vie des deux espions qui avaient été envoyés par Joshua en reconnaissance en vue de l’invasion Israélite imminente de la ville de Jéricho. En guise de récompense pour son aide, Rahab et sa famille sont épargnées et autorisées à vivre parmi les Israélites après la destruction de Jericho. He filled our house with Jewish books and always encouraged me to pursue Torah lishmah. 1 Chapter 1: Introduction Across the centuries, the story of Rahab and the spies has both perturbed and fascinated biblical commentators. Rahab the Canaanite harlot saves the Israelite spies, is exempted from YHVH's injunction to destroy all the local inhabitants, and becomes a member of the Israelite tribe. For the devout, who take the story as a faithful recounting of history, it is troubling that a prostitute is the heroine of a narrative introducing the conquest of the Promised Land. The non- devout are not troubled by such theological difficulties and instead enjoy the story’s titillation and suspense. They are, however, concerned about the purpose and meaning of this story since it is a digression from the main conquest narrative and appears to add little, if anything, to the primary message of the Book of Joshua that YHVH is fulfilling his promise to the descendants of Abraham. This thesis reviews the history of interpretation of the Rahab story from antiquity through the medieval period. It critically summarizes the major strands of interpretation in the biblical, Graeco-Roman, Midrashic, early Christian and medieval Jewish literatures. This choice of periods is based on a classification of the major eras of biblical interpretation proposed by Levy.1 The order of presentation of the chapters is chronological and is motivated by the historical approach underlying the thesis. Within each chapter, however, a combination of thematic and historical criteria is used to facilitate presentation of the material. A final chapter summarizes the major approaches to the interpretation of the Rahab story and critically examines the evidence for an underlying theme. It is the contention of this thesis that much of the history of interpretation of the Rahab story has reflected an ongoing theological discussion of the regulation of relationships between Jews and others. As compared with other biblical tales, the Rahab story takes a more inclusive view of the integration of non-Israelites into the Chosen People. Rahab, a Canaanite, a woman, and a prostitute, may arguably be the most "other" of biblical characters, yet she and her family are spared and invited to join the Israelites. It is not surprising, therefore, that commentators’ reactions to this inclusivity are an important part of the history of interpretation of the Rahab 1D22:#7:A #8(3'34#23.%4'# 2#"&#G #253+#,C2(,A(-02#024(.-HD 2 story. TOMSON Introduction: A Shared History This study is part of a larger project the ultimate aim of which is to write a shared, twin or intertwined history of Jews and Christians in the first and second centuries CE. The first stage of the project will be to select relevant sources, to describe their literary and historical characteristics, and to read and reread them in view of their significance vis-à-vis other sources. The second stage will encompass the writing of a historical synthesis of the shared history. We stress the shared aspect of the history because Judaism and Christianity in the ancient world are usually studied separately, as though involving not just two distinct histories, but also two separate sets of sources, two frameworks of interpretation and reflection, two programs of academic teaching, research, and writing, and two canons of judgment and review.     Rahab… From Harlot to Heroine Lesson 4 Written by Gloria Scholten Introduction Rahab the Harlot, as she is referred to in Scripture, was a Canaanite woman living in Jericho and a contemporary of Joshua. Jericho had been promised by God to the Israelites, and after 40 years of wandering in the desert, it was time for them to take the land. Rahab was a prostitute and would seem to be an unlikely candidate to aid God’s chosen people into the Promised Land. Yet God chose her. The culture she was surrounded by was full of idol worship and immoral people much like our own world today. Her bold faith in God and willingness to be used by God empowered her to take action. Rahab demonstrated that belief by putting her home, resources and personal safety at risk. Her testimony paints a beautiful picture of what one woman with faith standing alone in a pagan society can accomplish. The life of Rahab will show us that God’s grace has no limits. Rahab was a prostitute - yet God saw her as so much more. Her life is an illustration of God’s divine grace. God called her and saved her; even though she was what most people would have considered not worthy of salvation. She is living proof that His blood will make even the vilest vessel clean. She experienced the fullness of God’s grace and mercy. How encouraged are you to know that no matter who you are or what you have done, His desire is to know you and for you to know Him? Edwards, Pastor Because of her profession, Rahab, a Canaanite woman, was always identified as a harlot. Because of her expressed faith in a forgiving and merciful God, Rahab became a heroine to her family, the first Gentile to be welcomed into God’s family, and one of the mothers in the lineage of Jesus. Even though she was a Gentile, the writer of Hebrews included Rahab in the Hebrew Hall of Faith; identifying her as the woman who did not perish, like those who were disobedient. Even though she worked as a prostitute, and lied to the king’s messengers, James, the half-brother of Jesus, said Rahab was “justified by her works when she received the messengers and sent them another way.” The reason the story of Rahab is in the Scriptures is to show us that God delights to display the glory of His grace, and the wonders of His love, to and through the least likely candidates. The New Testament lists two genealogies of Jesus. Luke 3:23-38 is the ascending record of Jesus’ family tree, beginning with the birth of Jesus to Mary, and then tracing His lineage back 77-generations to Adam. Luke wrote his genealogy of Jesus to prove His humanity. Matthew 1:1-17 is the descending record of Jesus’ family tree, beginning with Abraham and tracing his lineage forward 42-generations to Joseph.

    Lesson 3 - In Self-Defense (Job's responses) The book of JOB is about… Job. That seems obvious, but it’s also easy to forget in a rambling and rather confusing text. The rest of the “cast” (so to speak) are basically “foils” for Job. That makes Job’s speeches very important. In this lesson, Job gets to speak for himself. Unfortunately, it is difficult to sort out the flow of Job’s speeches, especially in the third-cycle of arguments. Biblical scholars have long recognized that the texts of the third cycle got muddled and moved about at some point, with Job seemingly arguing against himself in places, while “friend” Bildad is given almost nothing to say, and Zophar is missing altogether. (See the appendix to this lesson, with the text rearranged according to commentator Marvin Pope’s suggestion.) Back In the opening ancient story (Lesson 1), Job is presented as the unwitting, and innocent, victim of testing by God and the Adversary. In the dialogues… which take up chapters 3 to 31… the conversation is an ongoing set of assertions by Job of his innocence, and of protestations of God’s unjustified actions against him. As readers, we need to keep remembering that Job is not wrong in all of this, he’s the one who’s right. The ones who are wrong, who God is most displeased with at the end, are the so-called “Comforters” – the ones re-christened as the “Un-Comfortables” in Lesson 2. (See 42: 7-8) Their sanctimonious pieties, and simplistic assumptions are erroneous, as well as mean-spirited.
