Erika Harold Biography Erika was born and raised in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and graduated from Urbana High School. Having grown up surrounded by the Orange and Blue, Erika decided to attend college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she majored in Political Science. She graduated from the U of I in 2001 as a Phi Beta Kappa inductee and a Chancellor’s Scholar. Erika then applied to and was accepted by several law schools, including Harvard Law School. Lacking the funds, however, to pay for law school, Erika decided to compete in the Miss America Organization to attempt to earn the scholarship money necessary to pay for law school. Erika went on to be crowned Miss Illinois 2002 and Miss America 2003, earning thousands of dollars in scholarships along the way. As Miss America 2003, Erika promoted the platform Preventing Youth Violence and Bullying, sharing with more than 100,000 students her own experience of overcoming bullying. She also helped to elevate the public’s consciousness of the effects of bullying, discussing peer-to-peer harassment on television shows such as Good Morning America and The Today Show and helping to release Fight Crime, Invest in Kids’ bullying prevention report at the National Press Club. In recognition of her advocacy, Erika was named one of Fight Crime, Invest in Kids’ “Champions for Children” and received a leadership award from the National Center for Victims of Crime. During her year as Miss America, Erika also championed the Children’s Miracle Network and the USO, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving America’s troops.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship Repository PATHWAYS TO CONGRESS: PRECONGRESSIONAL CAREERS AND CONGRESSIONAL BEHAVIOR BY KATHERINE A. FRANCIS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Tracy Sulkin, Chair and Director of Research Professor William Bernhard Professor Jeffery Mondak Assistant Professor Gisela Sin ABSTRACT Members of Congress have a variety of career experiences before Congress, non-political and political. In this dissertation, I bring together interdisciplinary strands of research on careers and occupational behavior to compare how MCs from different career backgrounds act in the U.S. House of Representatives. I argue that career experiences can provide relevant skills and insights that members in their first and second terms use to adjust to being Representatives. Through a large-scale analysis of members serving in the 101st-112th Congresses (1989-2012), I find that precongressional career experiences have multiple connections to members’ decisions. Career experiences relate to the contents of members’ legislative agendas, their orientation toward legislative activities and constituent outreach, and their partisan loyalty. Members with legislative and executive backgrounds are more active in the legislative process and more successful in seeing their bills become law. MCs with different career experiences also craft different legislative agendas – the number and types of bills on which they take legislative action. New MCs significantly introduce and cosponsor a greater number of bills on policy topics that relate to their past experience, for instance – medical doctors introducing health bills.

Methodist History, 56:2 (January 2018) MISS AMERICAN METHODIST: TWENTIETH-CENTURY BEAUTY PAGEANTS AS CHRISTIAN MISSION Christopher J. Anderson Since 1921, the Miss America pageant has become a coveted and con- troversial showcase of young women from locations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.1 Contestants have been crowned and marketed as talented, intelligent, and physically attractive. While competing definitions of beauty and sexuality have been intricately woven into the fabric of the pageant since its inception, the spectacle has also functioned as a public stage to broadcast the political, social and religious perspectives of and agen- das for each contestant. Examples include Jean Bartel, who in 1943 used her Miss America victory to promote and sell war bonds to the American public. In 1998, Kate Shindle used her title as a means to bring global awareness to persons with HIV/AIDS, and in 1975 and 1995 Shirley Cothran and Heath- er Whitestone brokered their respective pageants as platforms to propagate their Christian faith.2 The purpose of this essay is to introduce the multiple ways in which twentieth-century beauty contests have functioned as carefully crafted ven- ues that spotlight and promote certain forms of attractiveness alongside the winner’s Christian faith—particularly through the forms of Protestant wom- en’s bodies representing the larger institutional denominational bodies of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Methodist Church and The United Methodist Church. The essay explores the origins of the Miss America pageant and highlights three specific competitions where American Methodists shaped and marketed contests to showcase ideal Methodist women who were phys- ically appealing, vibrant in their Christian faith, and active within their local Methodist church.

Tyson An abstract of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate Program in Religion in the Graduate School of Duke University 2014 Copyright by Mandy Ellene McMichael 2014 Abstract Christian engagement with beauty contests shifted dramatically between the initial Miss America pageant in 1921 and its 90 th anniversary in 2011. This dissertation explores how and why many Christians found the organization an institution worthy of partnership with the church. It examines three aspects of Christian involvement in the contest: the long history of beauty pageants, the persistent emphasis on individual physical attractiveness, and the idea of witness in southern evangelical culture. It argues that after 1965, at least two factors enabled the unlikely marriage of Christians and the Miss America Organization: the perceived threat of second-wave feminism and evangelicalism’s increasing desire to engage culture.

Our goal is to provide business leaders and constituents quick, reliable access to comprehensive information about this year’s elections. Based on a compilation of public polling and forecasting data collected and analyzed by Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball, the Cook Political Report, and Governing, information provided on our site will be updated as appropriate. I hope you find our site helpful, and please let us know if you have any questions about our country’s most anticipated state elections. Gov. James Hodges President +1 803 251 2301 Email McGuireWoods Consulting | 2 Why are the 2018 elections important? During midterm elections, state races often take a backseat to the races in the U.S. Congress. But for 2018, the electoral battles in the states are critical because there is much at stake: Whichever party ends up controlling the governorships and state legislatures in key states after the election will have substantial influence over the congressional redistricting process after the next census. How district maps are drawn will have an impact on state and congressional races in the next 10 years. New maps could increase the number of seats in Congress for one party or the other, effectively giving one party an advantage in securing majorities in state legislatures and the U.S.
