Media inquiries: Véronique Rodman 202.862.4871 ([email protected]) Orders: 1.800.462.6420 or 1.717.794.3800 IN OUR HANDS: A PLAN TO REPLACE THE WELFARE STATE By Charles Murray With his new book, In Our Hands: A Plan to Replace the Welfare State, Charles Murray offers a radical solution to the problems of the entitlement system: get rid of it entirely and give $10,000 a year to every American adult. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 25, 2006 The AEI Press Charles Murray offers a plan that would eliminate all income transfer programs at the federal, state, and local levels—including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, and corporate subsidies—and would substitute an annual cash grant of $10,000 for life, beginning at age twenty-one. Murray argues that “the Plan” would end poverty, allow all Americans access to health care, and empower people to control their own lives. Murray’s book describes the financial feasibility of his ideas and their effect on retirement, health care, poverty, marriage and family, work, neighborhoods, and the larger civil society. In his seminal 1984 book Losing Ground, Murray sparked national debate by arguing that the social programs of the Great Society not only failed to help the poor and disadvan- taged, but also made things worse. Now, Murray has written a book that is, in his own words, “not a book about poverty. It’s about building a society in which people can run their own lives.” Once again, Charles Murray is ahead of his time: • Today, about 36 million people are below the poverty line. -

1 BARACK OBAMA, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, and JOHN DEWEY In
File: Schulten web preprint Created on: 1/29/2009 9:52:00 AM Last Printed: 1/31/2009 2:13:00 PM BARACK OBAMA, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, AND JOHN DEWEY SUSAN SCHULTEN In the last few months, there has been a spate of comparisons be- tween Obama and some of our most influential former presidents. Just days after the election, Congress announced the theme of the inaugura- tion as “A New Birth of Freedom,” while reporters and commentators speculate about “A New New Deal” or “Lincoln 2.0.”1 Many of these comparisons are situational: Obama is a relatively inexperienced lawyer- turned-politician who will inherit two wars and an economic crisis un- equalled since the Great Depression.2 The backlash has been equally vocal. Many consider these com- parisons both premature and presumptuous, evidence that the media is sympathetic toward an Obama Administration or that the President-elect has himself orchestrated these connections.3 Indeed, Obama frequently invoked Lincoln as both a model for and an influence over his own can- didacy, which he launched on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois. He introduced Vice-President Joe Biden in the same spot, where the latter also referenced the memory of Lincoln.4 Cer- tainly it makes sense for Obama to exploit Lincoln’s legacy, for no other figure in American history continues to command such admiration, the occasional neo-Confederate or other detractor notwithstanding.5 To posi- tion Obama in front of the State House is surely meant to place him as a kind of an heir to Lincoln. -

New Couple: Cameron Diaz Is Dating Benji Madden By Shannon Seibert After weeks of keeping their relationship under wraps, Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden are finally out in the open. Diaz, 41, and Madden, 35 are considered “new” and “just hanging out” but the Good Charlotte singer is considered the first high-profile relationship for Diaz since her split from Alex Rodriguez in 2011. The pair have Madden’s sister in-law, Nicole Richie to thank for their introduction, according to UsMagazine.com. How do you keep your new relationship on the down-low? Cupid’s Advice: When your relationship is just blossoming, it can be difficult to figure out your own feelings about that person if your relationship is highly publicized. With everyone giving you their input, and pestering you about the latest details of your love life, you may get caught up in the attention and neglect the fact that it may not even be working. By initially keeping your new relationship on the down-low, you’ll be able to discover your feelings for your new beau, and find out whether or not you could really gal for this person: 1. Hold off on updating your social media status: Until you get out of the murky waters of “What direction is this going in?” you don’t need to make your relationship Facebook Official. These days defining your relationship is harder than it looks, so at first your don’t want to jump to conclusions about your relationship status with your man. Just keep cool, calm and collective, and once you both have your feet on the ground you can upload those adorable selfies you have on your camera roll. -
