Even his former band mate from the Beatles, John Lennon, had mocked McCartney’s preoccupation 10:45 am with “silly love songs.” McCartney promptly answered with the words Sunday Worship and music that would become the most popular song of the year. The song is anything but silly. MINISTERS The Congregation As Christians, we sing a lot of songs about love too. None of them are silly either. We sing traditional hymns like “Love Divine, All Loves Ex- STAFF celling.” We enjoy old-time gospel favorites like “Love Lifted Me.” At Pastor Christmas, choirs bless us with such anthems as “Love Came Down at Stuart Noell Christmas.” We are drawn to the Cross by choruses like “O How He [email protected] Loves You and Me.” The younger generation loves upbeat contemporary Minister of Visitation Christian hits like “How He Loves” and “Your Love Never Fails.” We Harold Shives (336) 434-6348 have songs about love that relate to every style, tempo and age group. But more important than the variety of songs we sing is the reason Director of Youth & Children’s Ministries that we sing. We sing because we have experienced God’s love deep down Kevin Teater in our hearts. We know that God’s love has been expressed most of all in [email protected] the person of Jesus Christ. In February, we always think about love! This February I was inspired by a coworker (that also goes to this church) when she told me she was doing “random acts of kindness” on her birthday – 1 for each year of her life. What a wonderful idea! I thought that this February I would challenge you to do 14 random acts of kindness for Valentine’s Day. You do not have to do them all on Valentine’s Day. Here are some ideas to get you started! Some of these ideas came from www .helpothers.org and www.daretobeanangel.com. 1. When you go out to eat, buy a sandwich for a homeless person on the street. 2. Call your parents, siblings, or anyone and tell them you love them. 3. Write a handwritten note or email someone to tell them you appreciate them. 4. Buy extra food for COAT when you go to the grocery store. 5. Instead of just thinking it, compliment someone. 6. Make extra food and take your neighbor dinner. 7. Visit a senior center or nursing home. 8. Pick up trash. 9. Take clothes, blankets, etc. to a local shelter like COAT or Ward Street Mission. 10. Donate books to an elementary school for a needy child. 11. Visit an animal shelter and play with the dogs! 12. Serve dinner at the Open Door Ministry. 13. Mentor a local youth for Communities in Schools or read to a child. 14. Pay for the person behind you at the drive-thru. 15. Give a snack or some water to the mailman, garbage collector, etc. 16. Give your waiter or waitress a huge tip. 17. Rake or mow someone’s yard. 18. Hold the elevator or door for someone, or let someone get in line in front of you. 19. Leave an uplifting book or a coloring book and crayons in a hospital waiting room. 20. Practice patience. Refrain from gossiping; speak well of others. Be cheerful! 21. Babysit for a single parent. 22. Run an errand for someone. 23. Invite someone who is alone over for dinner. 24. Donate blood. 25. Take cookies to Fire Department or the Police Department. 26. Pick up or take down your neighbor’s trash cans. 27. Make a list of people with needs and pray for them. 28. Invite someone to church! I am sure by now your imagination is going strong, and you can think of many ways to make this February a beauti- ful month! You can do 14 random acts of kindness without spending a penny. I highlighted ideas that do not cost any- thing or require you to go anywhere. Invite 14 people to church, and you have done it! You can do this regardless of your age. Take a cookie to a coworker. Smile and say good morning to someone. Mix and match for 14 acts, and you have made the world a better place. You are also spreading the love of God to the world that needs Him. Remember, when you say, “I love you,” LOVE is a verb, which requires an action. Of course, if you are helping others, remember to help yourself – come to church! I will see you there. Keep the Faith! Cheryl REMINDERS February 11 - Morning Circle will meet at 10:30am in the Community Room. February 12 - Evening Circle will meet at 7:00pm in the Wesley Room. Maintaining security in any church building is a challenging situation. True to who we are as a church, we desire to allow access to everyone for our church activities. At the same time, as stewards of what God has entrusted to our care, we must make every attempt to pro- tect our facilities and its contents. With these considerations in mind, we offer this church key policy. Church keys will be issued to: The pastor and all church staff. All church officers. Each committee chairperson. Each ministry team leader. Community organizations that use our facilities. Local vendors who need access to the buildings on a regular basis. Opening and closing crew members for their assigned month. We realize that other members of our church family may need a church key for a variety of reasons. The board of trustees will gladly consider each of these requests on an individual basis and make every effort to accommodate these needs.

  • Sounding Sentimental: American Popular Song from Nineteenth-Century Ballads to 1970S Soft Rock Emily Margot Gale Vancouver, BC B
Sounding Sentimental: American Popular Song From Nineteenth-Century Ballads to 1970s Soft Rock Emily Margot Gale Vancouver, BC Bachelor of Music, University of Ottawa, 2005 Master of Arts, Music Theory, University of Western Ontario, 2007 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Virginia May, 2014 © Copyright by Emily Margot Gale All Rights Reserved May 2014 For Ma with love iv ABSTRACT My dissertation examines the relationship between American popular song and “sentimentality.” While eighteenth-century discussions of sentimentality took it as a positive attribute in which feelings, “refined or elevated,” motivated the actions or dispositions of people, later texts often describe it pejoratively, as an “indulgence in superficial emotion.” This has led an entire corpus of nineteenth- and twentieth-century cultural production to be bracketed as “schmaltz” and derided as irrelevant by the academy. Their critics notwithstanding, sentimental songs have remained at the forefront of popular music production in the United States, where, as my project demonstrates, they have provided some of the country’s most visible and challenging constructions of race, class, gender, sexuality, nationality, and morality. My project recovers the centrality of sentimentalism to American popular music and culture and rethinks our understandings of the relationships between music and the public sphere. In doing so, I add the dimension of sound to the extant discourse of sentimentalism, explore a longer history of popular music in the United States than is typical of most narratives within popular music studies, and offer a critical examination of music that—though wildly successful in its own day—has been all but ignored by scholars.

Glee and Flash Mobs 1 Glee, Flash Mobs, and the Creation of Heightened Realities In May of 2009 the television series Glee (Fox, 2009-2015) made its debut on the Fox network, in the coveted post-American Idol (2002-present) timeslot. Glee was already facing an uphill battle due to its musical theatre genre; the few attempts at a musical television series in the medium’s history, Cop Rock (ABC, 1990) and Viva Laughlin (CBS, 2007) among them, had been overall failures. Yet Glee managed to defeat the odds, earning high ratings in its first two seasons and lasting a total of six. Critics early on attributed Glee’s success to the popularity of the Disney Channel’s television movie High School Musical (2006) and its subsequent sequels, concerts and soundtracks. That alone cannot account for the long-term sensation that Glee became, when one acknowledges that High School Musical was a stand-alone movie (sequels notwithstanding).
