The first Beatles song to include a reference to getting “high” (“I get high when I see you go by”). The working title prior to lyrics being written was “That’s a Nice Hat.” George Martin and his Orchestra recorded the instrumental version of “It’s Only Love” using the original title. In 1972 Lennon called “It’s Only Love” “the one song I really hate of mine.” On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Love Me Do – Please Please Me (McCartney-Lennon) Lead vocal: John and Paul The Beatles’ first single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. Released October 5, 1962, it reached #17 on the British charts. Principally written by Paul McCartney in 1958 and 1959. Recorded with three different drummers: Pete Best (June 6, 1962, EMI audition), Ringo Starr (September 4, 1962), and Andy White (September 11, 1962 with Ringo playing tambourine). The 45 rpm single lists the songwriters as Lennon-McCartney. One of several Beatles songs Paul McCartney owns with Yoko Ono. Starting with the songs recorded for their debut album on February 11, 1963, Lennon and McCartney’s output was attached to their Northern Songs publishing company. Because their first single was released before John and Paul had contracted with a music publisher, EMI assigned it to their own, a company called Ardmore and Beechwood, which took the two songs “Love Me Do” and “P.S. I Love You.” Decades later McCartney and Ono were able to purchase the songs for their respective companies, MPL Communications and Lenono Music. Fun fact: John Lennon shoplifted the harmonica he played on the song from a shop in Holland. John’s original lyric was “I can’t go on feeling two foot tall,” but when singing it for Paul the first time he accidentally said, two foot “small.” Lennon then laughed and said, “Let’s leave it … all those pseudes will really love it.” The first of their songs since “Love Me Do” in 1962 to feature an outside musician. Johnnie Scott provides the flute solo at the end of the song, though he is not credited on the album jacket. On U.S. album: Revolver - Capitol LP 5 6 The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul sessions (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocals: John with Paul Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his “first real major piece of work.” Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- “Eleanor Rigby” and “In My Life.” Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John’s Mellotron. The gorgeous piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles – Something (Harrison) - Abbey Road - Recorded – April 16th 1969 - Released as a single in US on Oct. 6th 1969…George’s FIRST A Side on a Beatles single. - Inspired by Pattie Harrison and written during the very end of the White LP sessions. - George gave it to Joe Cocker a year before he recorded it with the Beatles. - The second most covered Beatles tune EVER…(Yesterday) - Frank Sinatra – “The greatest love song of the past fifty years”. 6 7 The Beatles - If I Fell – LIVE at the BBC (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John and Paul John Lennon’s stunning ballad “If I Fell” was by far the most complex song he had written to date. It could be considered a progression from “This Boy” with its similar chord structure and intricate harmonies by John and Paul, recorded – at their request – together on one microphone. Performed live on their world tour throughout the summer of 1964. Completed in 15 takes on February 27, 1964. Flip side of “And I Love Her” in the U.S. On U.S. album: A Hard Day’s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP Paul McCartney – For No One - Give My Regards to Broad Street ‘84 The Beatles - Don’t Let Me Down - Non-LP B-Side (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John with Paul The Beatles’ nineteenth single release for EMI, and second on the Apple Records label. The “Get Back” sessions, as the January 1969 recording sessions were now known, produced about 475 hours of film and 141 hours of audio tape that had to be sifted through. But proper multi-track recordings weren’t made until the band was recording in the basement of the Beatles’ Apple headquarters between January 21-31, 1969. 7 8 Producer/Engineer Glyn Johns attempted to construct an album entitled “Get Back” from the tapes but his versions were rejected. The tapes would be left dormant in the vault for a year, with the exception of a single (“Get Back”/“Don’t Let Me Down”). John Lennon’s “Don’t Let Me Down” was a love song for Yoko Ono and was the first song given a full run-through by the group when sessions for the new album began at Twickenham Studios on January 2, 1969. But proper multi-track recording takes were not done until the band changed location to the basement recording studio at their Apple headquarters.

John Lennon – Steel and Glass - Walls And Bridges ‘74 Much like “How Do You Sleep” three years earlier, this is another blistering Lennon track that sets its sights on Allen Klein (who had contributed lyrics to “How Do You Sleep” those few years before). The Beatles - Revolution 1 - The Beatles 2 The first song recorded during the sessions for the “White Album.” At the time of its recording, this slower version was the only version of John Lennon’s “Revolution,” and it carried that titled without a “1” or a “9” in the title. Recording began on May 30, 1968, and 18 takes were recorded. On the final take, the first with a lead vocal, the song continued past the 4 1/2 minute mark and went onto an extended jam. It would end at 10:17 with John shouting to the others and to the control room “OK, I’ve had enough!” The final six minutes were pure chaos with discordant instrumental jamming, plenty of feedback, percussive clicks (which are heard in the song’s introduction as well), and John repeatedly screaming “alright” and moaning along with his girlfriend, Yoko Ono. Ono also spoke random streams of consciousness on the track such as “if you become naked.” This bizarre six-minute section was clipped off the version of what would become “Revolution 1” to form the basis of “Revolution 9.” Yoko’s “naked” line appears in the released version of “Revolution 9” at 7:53.

    The Apple Label With the Capitol Logo When Apple label introduced itself to the world in 1968, the brand featured a label design from the Gene Mahon agency. Reportedly, Neil Aspinall of Apple contacted Gene Mahon personally and told him that they would like for Mahon to shoot photographs of apples. His idea was to have a full apple on one side with no writing whatsoever, and a sliced apple on the other side containing all of the information about the record. With the way that the laws were written, EMI were reluctant to cram all of the information onto one label (which might also pose logistical problems on an album label). Mahon selected Paul Castell to take the photographs. Some apple photos later, and the famous Apple record label was born. The rim area around the label was left blank, to allow each EMI affiliate the ability to print whatever manufacturing information they desired (or what might be required by law). The art department at Capitol Records decided to keep the print to a minimum. At the bottom of the sliced side, they placed the words “Mfd. by Apple Records, Inc.” That was all that needed to be said. A few months later, Capitol decided to mark the labels differently for artists who had contracts with Capitol. At the time, this basically meant the Beatles themselves, whose singles were numbered as part of the Capitol series (in the 2000s). Records that were from artists whose discs were in the Apple series (the 1800s) and who had contracts through Apple alone would continue to be marked with “Mfd.

The track is notable for the backwards vocal from John Lennon at the end of the song. The section is John singing part of the first verse but the tape is superimposed backwards in the mix. The song contains slowed down instruments, guitar distortion, and vocals recorded and played back at variable speed. Aside from Paul McCartney’s dominant bass part, the song features a striking drum performance from Ringo, who has called “Rain” his favorite Beatles song. The B-side of “Paperback Writer.” Issued in America on May 23, 1966 and the UK on June 10, 1966, several months in advance of the “Revolver” album. On U.S. album: Hey Jude - Capitol LP (1970) 2 3 The Beatles - Paperback Writer - A Collection Of Beatles Oldies (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles’ twelfth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. Recorded on April 13 and 14, 1966. The track is notable for Paul McCartney’s furious bass line. The bass is so prominent in the mix that sound engineers at EMI worried it could cause the stylus of a record player tone arm (the needle thing on record players) to jump when fans played the 45 RPM single at home. Thankfully, no such calamity occurred. For this heavy bass sound Paul’s chose to replace his usual Hofner bass with a Rickenbacker 4001S bass.

John’s composition was unlike anything The Beatles or anyone else had ever recorded. Lennon’s vocal is buried under a wall of sound -- an assemblage of repeating tape loops and sound effects – placed on top of a dense one chord song with basic melody driven by Ringo's thunderous drum pattern.
