His contract was cancelled the following month to enable him to emigrate to Australia where he continued to play in and around the Melbourne area. He has lived in Australia until his untimely death aged 65. John always had time to talk to the fans and was a hugely popular player at the club. The thoughts of everyone at Southport Football Club are with John’s family and friends at this sad time. He had stayed extremely fit and active right up until his final day. #ONEPORT25 HEADS YOU LOSE By Len Shackleton

I was never much good at heading. I’ve always envied first in the USA, home of the world’s largest those strikers who can soar above the rest to nod the concentration of lawyers, where threats of legal action ball into the net – or defenders who can clear the ball forced the hand of the US Soccer Federation. In 2015 it to the halfway line with one mighty stretch of the banned heading for under-10s and severely restricted it neck. Southport has had its fair share of both. for slightly older players. This could go much further, with some doctors arguing for a complete ban on heading at all levels of football. It’s difficult to see this happening immediately, though given today’s culture of minimizing risk I wouldn’t necessarily bet against it. If different rules applied in under-18 football to those in the adult game, this would have implications for the ability of outstanding young players to make the leap to the higher level. Would we any longer see 16-year-old Wayne Rooneys playing in the Premier League? And is it sensible for individual countries to adopt tight restrictions if others do not? Without international agreement, countries with tougher youth rules would be at a disadvantage in international competition. We could well see rule changes. For example, requirements that any player who bangs his (or her) head should be immediately substituted and not allowed to play again for some time, perhaps after a compulsory brain scan. There might have to be provision for ‘concussion substitutes’ in addition to the current maximum. The game itself could change: one suggestion has Jeff Astle been that heading should only be permitted in penalty areas. This would allow for exciting crosses and Most recently, a major study of Scottish former goalmouth action, but end those gormless hoofs up to professionals was published in November by Glasgow the centre circle which usually result in three or four University researchers.
