Fokies – Poria: We offer you an off road adventure which requires demanding driving and a chance to try our jeeps power! Adrenaline rises. On “Poria” we have a short break to rest for a while. Kallergis Refuge: We are now at an altitude of 1680m (5500ft). The view of the surrounding peaks and the seas of both North (Aegean sea) and South Crete (Libyan sea) , is breathtaking. Xiloskalo: After an off road route we will are at the entrance point of one of the longest ravines in Europe, the Samaria gorge, at 1200m (3900ft) altitude. It is time for some commemorative photos, using the beauty of “Lefka Ori” as background. Omalos Plateau - Lakkoi - Meskla - Zourva: Continue driving North to Chania, the beauty of nature changes in every turn. More tree groves, small rivers and more green colour in general around us. Picturesque villages make our Safari route memorable. Therisso: Lunch time! Taste Greek cuisine, wine and hospitality in a picturesque village, a turning point in the local history. The Cretan revolution started right here, in 1905! Venizelos Gorge: Our last stop, is in that amazing gorge. Admire and take plenty of photos of wild landscape nature. Haggis) The Early Iron Age (c. 1200-700 B.C.) on Crete is a period of transition, comprising the years after the final collapse of the palatial system in Late Minoan IIIB up to the development of the polis, or city-state, by or during the Archaic period. Over the course of this period, significant changes occurred in settlement patterns, settlement forms, ritual contexts, and most strikingly, in burial practices. Early Iron Age burial practices varied extensively throughout the island, not only from region to region, but also often at a single site; for example, at least 12 distinct tomb types existed on Crete during this time, and both inhumation and cremation were used, as well as single and multiple burial.

Crete 11 to 25 July 2009
Crete 11 to 25 July 2009 This time we were based at Kalamaki a few kilometres west of Chania. As usual most birding was done by bicycle in the early hours of the morning and once again it was Aghia Lake that received most of the attention. Generally plenty of birds to be seen all over the place – though often hard to obtain good views. Cetti’s and Sardinian Warbler everywhere, along with huge flocks of hirundines on the move. Common Buzzard were plentiful in all but the most built up of areas. The reduced species list this time is probably mostly due to visiting in the middle of summer. All in all Crete was again a fantastic place to visit from all points of view with the exception of the continuing development along the coast making it difficult to get away from things without heading inland. Cory’s Shearwater were plentiful, if for the most part rather distant from the hotel. One of the highlights this time was the spectacular “Swift show” over the harbour at Chania each evening. Thousands of Swifts came in and put on a brilliant display each evening. Small numbers of Alpine Swifts joined them as did bats and possibly a smaller species of Swift. The water levels at Aghia lake varied tremendously during two week period despite there being no rainfall. At times there seemed to be perilously little water there – though this may be what attracted the Green Sandpipers. Rich biodiversity, a significant number of endemic species, a variety of ecosystems and landscapes of outstanding natural beauty are what characterize our natural heritage. In acknowledging the value of our natural environment’s multiple functions as regards healthy living and quality of life, as well as in implementing our vision of sustainable development, Crete Regional Authority has made the protection, sound management and promotion of our island’s nature its top priority. The NATURA 2000 Network protected areas have a significant role to play in realising that aim, given that they act as key reserves for nature conservation throughout Europe. In publishing this “Ecotourism guide to NATURA 2000 network areas on Crete” we present the NATURA 2000 areas on Crete, highlighting their characteristics and stressing both their value and their prospects for growth. Sculpted by time and six thousand years of human history, our island’s nature is a common good each of us can enjoy, while also being under the obligation to protect it.
