Ánanda Thera Ven. Ananda Ministering the sick Monk Introduction – Reading the story of Ven. Ananda Thera, we come to know the significance of paying homage to Bodhi tree. It was instructed by Buddha to plant a sapling Bodhi tree to represent him – Buddha said to Ananda – 1. “Ánanda bring a sapling from the Bodhi Tree in Buddha Gaya and plant it in Jetavana. He then said: "In my absence, let my devotees pay homage to the great Bodhi Tree that gave me protection during enlightenment. Let the Bodhi Tree be a symbol of my presence. Those who honor the Bodhi. 2. The next significant contribution was the formation of the Bhikkhuni Sangha order for the first time in Buddha’s Ministry. 3. The next, is the Ratana Sutta – Yatana Tote - whenever, some one recite Ratana Sutta – Yatana Tote – we are reminded of Ven. Ananda who first recite this paritta sutta to clean the evil off the city of Vasali. 4. He attained the Arahantship on the day of the First Council of the Dhamma, (Sangayana), post Maha Parinaibbana period. He was declared the guardian of the Dhamma because of his retentive memory. One very significant lesson we can learn from the Maha-parinibbana Sutta is Buddha’s instruction to Ananda - "Ananda, please prepare a bed for me between the twin sal-trees, with its head to the north. I am tired, and will lie down." When we meditate we should always face towards the Northerly direction to accrue the purity of the Universe. -

ORIGIN AND NATURE OF ANCIENT INDIAN BUDDHISM K.T.S. Sarao 1 INTRODUCTION Since times immemorial, religion has been a major motivating force and thus, human history cannot be understood without taking religion into consideration. However, it should never be forgotten that the study of religion as an academic discipline is one thing and its personal practice another. An objective academic study of religion carried many dangers with it. The biggest danger involved in such a study is that it challenges one’s personal beliefs more severely than any other discipline. For most people appreciation of religious diversity becomes difficult because it contradicts the religious instruction received by them. For people experiencing such a difficulty, it may be helpful to realize that it is quite possible to appreciate one’s own perspective without believing that others should also adopt it. Such an approach may be different but certainly not inferior to any other. It must never be forgotten that scholarship that values pluralism and diversity is more humane than scholarship that longs for universal agreement. An important requirement of objective academic study of religion is that one should avoid being personal and confessional. In fact, such a study must be based on neutrality and empathy. Without neutrality and empathy, it is not possible to attain the accuracy that is so basic to academic teaching and learning. The academic study of religion helps in moderating confessional zeal. Such a study does not have anything to do with proselyting, religious instruction, or spiritual direction. As a matter of fact, the academic study of religion depends upon making a distinction between the fact that knowing about and understanding a religion is one thing and believing in it another. -

THERAVAADA BODHISATTVA IDEAAL Shanta Ratnayaka The Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies Volume 8, Number 2 (1985): 85-110. Paljude arvates on bodhisatta ideaal mahajaana idee. Sageli arvatakse ekslikult et theravaada õpetus bodhisattvast on kas ebatäiuslik või seda ei eksisteeri üleüldse ja vastandatakse mahajaana bodhisatta ideed theravaada arahandi ideaaliga kritiseerides viimast teravalt ning tembeldades seda isekaks ideaaliks. Selline väärarvamus võib pärineda mõnest populaarsest mahajaana tekstist, ekslikust või puudulikust theravaada õpetuse mõistmisest või mõlemast eeltoodud tegurist. I. Theravaada ei saa olla hīnajaana Cullavagga toob ära, et peale Buddha surma kohtusid vanemad Buddha õpetuse järgijad (thera) Rājagaha's esimese Suurkogu moodustamiseks. 1 Eesotsas Mahākassapa, Ānanda ja Upāli’ga, otsustasid kõik 500 Thera nõukogu liiget ühehäälselt koguda kokku Buddha õpetused (vinaya ja dhamma), mille erinevad Thera kogukonnad on säilitanud 500 aastat2 põlvest põlve retsideerimise teel. Those who adored Sivali Thera (Shin Thiwali) will appreciate an additional arahat who could fulfill your worldly wishes in addition to understanding his lovely exposition of the Buddha Dhamma. Whoever adores him will find the good kamma come to fruition, immediately in the present. Many worship him for good fortune and are of great help in their training practice (Dana-Sila-Bhavana) the slow and gradual step in the liberation effort to escape from the round of rebirths. Maha Kaccana Thera has acquired special skill and good kamma: a. He was acclaimed as the foremost in exposition the Buddha dhamma. b. He has a golden hue out of his body. c. He was known to given gifts to whoever makes wishes and pay adoration to him. “The Venerable Maha Kaccana's elevation to a position of pre-eminence in the Sangha was the flowering of a seed that had been planted long ago in the rolling cycles of samsara, the round of rebirths, and had been brought to gradual maturity over countless lives.” Maha Kaccana had aspired to become the Master of the Doctrinal Exposition at the time of Buddha Padumuttara. That very aspiration has come to maturity by his support through countless acts of meritorious deeds throughout the round of rebirths and one of the acts of meritorious deeds was his offering of a gold brick to the stupa that enshrined the relics of the Kassapa Buddha. -

It is designed to survey and analyse the teachings of the Bodhisattva ideal and its gradual development in selected Buddhist scriptures. The main issues relate to the evolution of the teachings of the Bodhisattva ideal. The Bodhisattva doctrine and practice are examined in six major stages. These stages correspond to the scholarly periodisation of Buddhist thought in India, namely (1) the Bodhisattva’s qualities and career in the early scriptures, (2) the debates concerning the Bodhisattva in the early schools, (3) the early Mahayana portrayal of the Bodhisattva and the acceptance of the six perfections, (4) the Bodhisattva doctrine in the earlier prajhaparamita-siltras\ (5) the Bodhisattva practices in the later prajnaparamita texts, and (6) the evolution of the six perfections (paramita) in a wide range of Mahayana texts. -
