March, the founder-editor of Buddhism in England (from 1943, The Middle Way), the quarterly journal of The Buddhist Lodge (now The Buddhist Society, London). It appeared in the issues for Volume 3 and was later offprinted as a pamphlet. Finally, after extensive revision by I.B. Horner (the late President of the Pali Text Society) and Jack Austin, it appeared as an integral part of A Buddhist Student’s Manual, published in 1956 by The Buddhist Society to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of its founding. The basic analysis of the Tipiþaka appeared in The Maha Bodhi, 37:19–42 (Calcutta 1929), and was reprinted in K.D.P. Wickremesinghe’s Biography of the Buddha (Colombo 1972). In the present edition, the basic analysis of the Canon has been left in its original state although some minor corrections had to be made. However, it has been found possible to fully explore the Saíyutta and Aòguttara Nikáyas together with three important texts from the Khuddaka Nikáya: Udána, Itivuttaka, and Suttanipáta. It was deemed unnecessary to give similar treatment to the Dhammapada, as this popular anthology is much more readily accessible. The Paþisambhidámagga has also been analysed. The index (except for minor amendments) was originally prepared by G.F. Allen and first appeared in his book The Buddha’s Philosophy. In this edition it has been simplified by extensive substitution of Arabic for Roman numerals. The Bibliography, a necessary adjunct in view of the reference nature of the whole work, has, however, been completely revised as a consequence of the vast output of books on the subject that have come on to the market over the past few decades. Indeed, it was originally intended to make this an exhaustive section of Pali works in the English language, past and present. A number of anthologies, however, include both suttas in their entirety and short extracts from the texts. In such cases the compiler has, where the works in question appear, only indicated the complete suttas, as it is hardly likely that brief passages in such vii An Analysis of the Páli Canon (possibly out-of-print) books will be referred to by the student who can now so easily turn to complete texts. Moreover, to keep the Bibliography to a manageable size, it was also necessary to omit a number of anthologies which include selected translations available from other, more primary sources. It is thus hoped that this short work will awaken in the reader a desire to study the original texts themselves, the most authoritative Buddhist documents extant. Space has precluded a detailed study of the Tipiþaka from the standpoints of language and chronology, but the source books mentioned in the Bibliography will more than compensate for this omission. TEXTUAL ANALYSIS The Páli Canon, also called the Tipiþaka or “Three Baskets” (of doctrine), is divided into three major parts: a) Vinaya Piþaka: The Collection of Disciplinary Rules. b) Sutta Piþaka: The Collection of the Buddha’s Discourses. c) Abhidhamma Piþaka: The Collection of Philosophical Treatises. A. Vinaya Piþaka—the Collection of Disciplinary Rules Bhikkhu and Bhikkhunì Pátimokkha The monastic code of the bhikkhu (Buddhist monk) contains 220 rules and 7 legal procedures, consisting of eight classes: Four rules, if infringed, entail expulsion from the Order (párájika). These are sexual intercourse, theft, taking a human life or inciting another to commit suicide, and falsely boasting of supernormal attainments. Thirteen rules entailing initial and subsequent meetings of the Sangha (saòghádisesa). These include masturbation, lustful physical and verbal contact with a woman, creating a schism, etc. Two rules are indefinite (aniyata). Whether the being alone with a woman is a párájika, saòghádisesa or pácittiya offence. Thirty rules entail expiation with forfeiture (nissaggiya pácittiya). Rules dealing with improper possession of requisites such as robes. Ninety-two rules entail expiation (pácittiya). Rules dealing with wrong conduct such as lying, damaging plants, possessing gold and silvers, etc. Four rules require confession (páþidesanìya). Seventy-five rules are concerned with etiquette and decorum (sekhiya). Seven procedures are for the settlement of legal processes (adhikaraóasamatha). 1 An Analysis of the Páli Canon This section is followed by another called the Bhikkhunìvibhaòga, providing similar guidance for nuns. The monastic code of the bhikkhunì (Buddhist nun) contains 324 rules and 7 legal procedures, consisting of seven classes: a) Eight rules, if infringed, entail expulsion from the Order (párájika). b) Seventeen rules entailing initial and subsequent meetings of the Sangha (saòghádisesa). c) Thirty rules entail expiation with forfeiture (nissaggiya pácittiya). d) Hundred sixty-six rules entail expiation (pácittiya). e) Eight rules require confession (páþidesanìya). f) Seventy-five rules are concerned with etiquette and decorum (sekhiya). g) Seven procedures are for the settlement of legal processes (adhikaraóasamatha). 1. Suttavibhaòga The analysis of the Sutta or Pátimokkha. Each Pátimokkha rule is treated by way of an origin story (nidána) leading up to the laying down of the rule, the rule, a word analysis (padabhájanìya) of the rule, and (usually) modifications of the rule and exceptions.

To provide a better understanding of the context, the thesis offers a brief historical background of Buddhist-Christian relations in Myanmar. By mainly relying on the translation of the Pali Tipitaka, along with a number of secondary sources from prominent Buddhist scholars, the self-liberation concept of Theravada Buddhism is discussed, beginning with the personal experience of Gotama, the Buddha. The thesis is descriptive in nature. The research employs a basic qualitative method, integrated with the analytical and interpretive methods. Correlation and synthesis were done and are presented in the final chapter with an emphasis on implications for interfaith dialogue. The study produced some significant findings.

Even in the midst of prosperity and success, grinding notes of discontent trouble our days and disturbing dreams come to haunt our sleep. As long as our eyes remain coated with dust we incline to locate the cause of our discontent outside ourselves—in spouse, neighbour or job, in implacable fate or fluky chance. But when the dust drops off and our eyes open, we soon find that the real cause lies within. When we discover how deeply the cause of our unhappiness is lodged in the mind, the realization dawns that cosmetic changes will not be anywhere near enough, that a fundamental internal transformation is required. This desire for a transformed personality, for the emergence of a new man from the ashes of the old, is one of the perennial lures of the human heart. From ancient times it has been a potent wellspring of the spiritual quest, and even in the secular, life-affirming culture of our own cosmopolitan age this longing has not totally disappeared. While such concepts as redemption, salvation and deliverance may no longer characterize the transformation that is sought, the urge for a radical reshaping of the personality persists as strong as ever, appearing in guises that are compatible with the secular worldview. Where previously this urge sought fulfillment in the temple, ashram and monastery, it now resorts to new venues: the office of the psychoanalyst, the weekend workshop, the panoply of newly spawned therapies and cults: However, despite the change of scene and conceptual framework, the basic pattern remains the same.

    Stages of the Path: Stream Entry and Beyond by Bodhiketu For many years I have thought that the traditional Nikāya scheme of Stream Entrant, Once- Returner, Non-Returner and Arahant was unclear. The category of Once-Returner seems particularly strange, even bizarre. What does it mean to have a 'stage' in which the fourth and fifth fetters (that is, craving and hatred) are merely weakened? How ‘weak’ is enough to qualify? How could that be measured or attained? This appeared to be nothing other than an example of scholastic foolishness, but the scheme was not easy to dismiss because it is asserted as a very real category in the Pali Canon and commentaries. Moreover, there is an apparent contradiction within the Pali Canon itself about the ethical criteria that are indicative of Stream Entry. I have for some time thought that these ethical criteria were often set too high, both within the Western Buddhist Order and within the contemporary Theravāda, within parts of which it seems that Stream Entry has even come to be regarded as beyond the reach of practitioners in this current age. Why does any of this matter? Ultimately, I believe, it makes a great difference to the confidence that we have in our traditions – our institutions, practices and practitioners. In addition, it seems to me that being clear about the doctrine is of critical practical importance. Sangharakshita, the founder of the Western Buddhist Order, is often quoted as saying that Stream Entry is well within the reach of members of the Western Buddhist Order who have practised wholeheartedly for 20-30 years.

    The Decline of Buddhism in India It is almost impossible to provide a continuous account of the near disappearance of Buddhism from the plains of India. This is primarily so because of the dearth of archaeological material and the stunning silence of the indigenous literature on this subject. Interestingly, the subject itself has remained one of the most neglected topics in the history of India. In this book apart from the history of the decline of Buddhism in India, various issues relating to this decline have been critically examined. Following this methodology, an attempt has been made at a region-wise survey of the decline in Sind, Kashmir, northwestern India, central India, the Deccan, western India, Bengal, Orissa, and Assam, followed by a detailed analysis of the different hypotheses that propose to explain this decline. In part one, Bhikkhu Anālayo ex- amines the word-commentary on the rules found in the Suttavibhaṅga. In part two, Bhikkhu Brahmāli takes up the function of narrative portions in the Khandhakas. Part I: The Word-commentary in the Suttavibhaṅga The Suttavibhaṅga embeds its various rules in a canonical exegesis.     The Dhammakāyānussati-kathā: A Trace of “Siam's Borān Buddhism” from the Reign of Rāmā I (1782-1809 CE.) Woramat Malasart A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Arts Of the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand June 4, 2019 Abstract The Dhammakāya text genre appears in manuscripts, inscriptions, and printed texts found in Central Thailand, Northern Thailand, and Cambodia. Texts belonging to this genre share the same core Pāli verses, and date back to the Ayutthaya period. In this thesis, I transliterate, translate, contextualise and analyse the Dhammakāyānussati-kathā, “Words on the Recollec- tion of the Body of Dhammas,” which was part of the Suat Mon Plae, a collection of Bud- dhist chanting rituals compiled during the 1st reign (1782-1809), using a historical-critical approach to the text. The Dhammakāyānussati-kathā consists of verses composed in Pāli fol- lowed by the Thai translation, using a traditional method called yok sab. The first three parts of the Dhammakāyānussati-kathā share the core Pāli verses of the Dhammakāya text genre, but the final section, which praises the Buddha‟s physical body, is different. The Pāli vers- es describe the Buddha‟s auspicious marks including radiance, hair, height, etc., verses that are also found in the Golden Manuscript Braḥ Dhammakāya, a text that can be dated to the 1st reign. Today, the Dhammakāyānussati-kathā is not well-known in Central Thailand, but its similar texts are still used in Northern Thailand and Cambodia during buddhābhiṣeka and the ritual of installing the Buddha‟s heart into a Buddha statute and chedī.
