Chapter 18 Magazines and Newsletters
Chapter 18 Magazines and Newsletters 18.1 ... The Beginning Publication of personal computing articles was initially in electronic magazines such as Popular Electronics, QST and Radio-Electronics. Then came the magazines and newsletters devoted to personal computing and microcomputers. Most of these initial publications were not specific to a particular microprocessor or type of microcomputer. The following are some of the more significant publications. The first publication devoted to personal computing was the Amateur Computer Society ACS Newsletter. The editor was Stephen B. Gray who was also the founder of ACS. The first issue was published in August 1966 and the last in December 1976. It was a bi- monthly directed at anyone interested in building and operating a personal computer. The newsletter was a significant source of information on the design and construction of a computer during the time period it was published. The PCC Newsletter was published by Robert L. Albrecht of the People's Computer Company in California. The first issue was published in October 1972. The first issue cover stated it “is a newspaper... about having fun with computers, learning how to use computers, how to buy a minicomputer for yourself your school and books films and tools of the future.” The newspaper name changed to the People’s Computers with a magazine type of format in May-June 1977. Hal Singer started the Micro-8 Newsletter in September 1974. This was a newsletter published by the Micro-8 Computer Users Group, originally the Mark-8 Group for Mark-8 computer users. Another publication started in 1974, was The Computer Hobbyist newsletter. -

DLC: Perpetual Commodification of the Video Game
Democratic Communiqué 25, No. 1, Spring 2012 DLC: Perpetual Commodification of the Video Game Ryan Lizardi The United States video game industry has become a multi-billion dollar-a-year business, due in large part to the explosion of downloadable content (DLC). Video game DLC includes handheld gaming and additional content not found on software discs. The DLC trend is examined for its increasing exploitation of video game con- sumers through a perpetual form of commodification. This article will show that video game DLC is a cyclical form of commodification, though not simply imma- nent or intertextual. Meaning that players are not paying for a commodity that springs from a previous product, but continually coming back and paying for the same product over and over again. DLC multiplayer maps in the first-person shooter, additional music tracks in rhythm games, and MMORPG microtransac- tions are explored for the ways they exist to fill the monetary gap between game software releases, but end up simultaneously exploiting consumers and their free/ immaterial labor. Introduction popular sentiment passed around about the Great Depression in the US is that the film industry not only survived where other industries had failed, but flour- ished in the face of incredible adversity. The film industry was seen as an inde- A structible source of escape for those going through hard times. In the recent bout of economic turmoil, sometimes called the Great Recession (Wessel 2010), it is not as if the film industry is floundering, but another medium has taken up the mantle of a "turmoil -proof" cultural force. -

Sports and the Rhetorical Construction of the Citizen-Consumer
THE SPORTS MALL OF AMERICA: SPORTS AND THE RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITIZEN-CONSUMER Cory Hillman A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2012 Committee: Dr. Michael Butterworth, Advisor Dr. David Tobar Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Clayton Rosati Dr. Joshua Atkinson © 2010 Cory Hillman All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Michael Butterworth, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate from a rhetorical perspective how contemporary sports both reflect and influence a preferred definition of democracy that has been narrowly conflated with consumption in the cultural imaginary. I argue that the relationship between fans and sports has become mediated by rituals of consumption in order to affirm a particular identity, similar to the ways that citizenship in America has become defined by one’s ability to consume under conditions of neoliberal capitalism. In this study, I examine how new sports stadiums are architecturally designed to attract upper income fans through the mobilization of spectacle and surveillance-based strategies such as Fan Code of Conducts. I also investigate the “sports gaming culture” that addresses advertising in sports video games and fantasy sports participation that both reinforce the burgeoning commercialism of sports while normalizing capitalism’s worldview. I also explore the area of licensed merchandise which is often used to seduce fans into consuming the sports brand by speaking the terms of consumer capitalism often naturalized in fan’s expectations in their engagement with sports. Finally, I address potential strategies of resistance that rely on a reassessment of the value of sports in American culture, predicated upon restoring citizens’ faith in public institutions that would simultaneously reclaim control of the sporting landscape from commercial entities exploiting them for profit. -
