Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy, vol. 9, no. 1, 2013 RHETORIC AND RATIONALITY Steve Mackey ABSTRACT: The dominance of a purist, ‘scientistic’ form of reason since the Enlightenment has eclipsed and produced multiple misunderstandings of the nature, role of and importance of the millennia-old art of rhetoric. For centuries the multiple perspectives conveyed by rhetoric were always the counterbalance to hubristic claims of certainty. As such rhetoric was taught as one of the three essential components of the ‘trivium’ – rhetoric, dialectic and grammar; i.e. persuasive communication, logical reasoning and the codification of discourse. These three disciplines were the legs of the three legged stool on which western civilisation still rests despite the perversion and muddling of the first of these three. This essay explains how the evisceration of rhetoric both as practice and as critical theory and the consequent over- reliance on a virtual cult of rationality has impoverished philosophy and has dangerously dimmed understandings of the human condition. This paper enlists Max Horkheimer (1895 – 1973) and Theodor Adorno (1903 – 1969), John Deely (1942 – ) and Charles Sanders Peirce (1839 –1914), along with some leading Enlightenment figures themselves in order to mount a critique of the fate of the millennia-old art of rhetoric during that revolution in ways of thinking. The argument will be that post-Enlightenment over- emphasis on what might variously be called dialectic, logic or reason (narrowly understood) has dulled understanding of what people are and how people think. -

Finally, we take up the main business at hand, that is, the examination of the Judaic element in the work of three Frankfurt School theorists: Max Horkheimer, Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno and Erich Fromm. In visual terms, the twentieth century of the western hemi- sphere will be remembered as the century in which content yielded to form, text to image, depth to façade, and Sein to Schein. For over a hundred years, mass cultural phenomena have been growing in importance, taking over from elite structures of cultural expression to become sites where real power resides, and dominating ever more surely our social imaginary. As reflections of the processes of capitalist industrialization in forms clad for popular consumption, these manifestations are literal and conceptual expressions of surface:1 they promote external appearance to us in such arenas as architecture, advertising, film, and fashion. Located as we are at the outset of the new millennium, some may recognize with trepidation that mass culture is becoming so wedded to highly orchestrated and intru- sive electronic formats that there seems to be less and less opportunity for any creative maieutics, or participatory “wiggle room.” Modernity’s sur- faces, entirely site-and-street-specific yet mobile and mobilizing, have been replaced by the stasis of the fluid mobility granted to our perception by the technologies of television, the VCR, the World Wide Web, and vir- tual reality.2 Perhaps as a result of this underlying discomfort, we appear to have a case of what Fredric Jameson has called “inverted millenarianism”:3 rather than look forward at future developments, we choose, almost apotropai- 1 2 / Introduction cally, to look back at how mass culture emerged in the first place. -

NATURE, SOCIOLOGY, AND THE FRANKFURT SCHOOL By Ryan Gunderson A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Sociology – Doctor of Philosophy 2014 ABSTRACT NATURE, SOCIOLOGY, AND THE FRANKFURT SCHOOL By Ryan Gunderson Through a systematic analysis of the works of Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, and Erich Fromm using historical methods, I document how early critical theory can conceptually and theoretically inform sociological examinations of human-nature relations. Currently, the first-generation Frankfurt School’s work is largely absent from and criticized in environmental sociology. I address this gap in the literature through a series of articles. One line of analysis establishes how the theories of Horkheimer, Adorno, and Marcuse are applicable to central topics and debates in environmental sociology. A second line of analysis examines how the Frankfurt School’s explanatory and normative theories of human- animal relations can inform sociological animal studies. The third line examines the place of nature in Fromm’s social psychology and sociology, focusing on his personality theory’s notion of “biophilia.” Dedicated to 바다. Karl Kautsky: Early Assumptions, Preconceptions, and Prejudices GARY P. STEENSON Washington, D. C., U.S.A. ABSTRACT Analysis of one of Karl Kautsky's earliest articles, "Der Kampf um's Dasein in der Menschenwelt" (1877a), reveals a relatively subtle and sophisticated understanding of biology and Darwinian theory, but also shows many of the problematical assumptions which colored Kautsky's early work. Even more importantly, this article makes it clear that far from disregar- ding the subjective element of human behavior, Kautsky made such behavior central to his efforts to link Darwinian thought to the workers' socialist movement. FROM 1875, WHEN AT THE AGE of twenty-one he published his first contributions to the socialist presses of Germany and Austria, until shortly before his death in 1938, Karl Kautsky was one of the most prolific and eclectic writers of the international socialist movement. He wrote about medieval England and Germany, ancient Greece, modern industry, philosophy, educa- tion, economics, history, modern society, imperialism, the natural and social sciences, contemporary affairs, party politics, Russia, France, the United States, anything, in fact, which struck his fancy and seemed important to him. For over half a century he devoted himself to advancing the cause of the workers' socialist movement and, more specifically, to the advancement of Marxism. Because of his close affiliation with the German Social Democratic Party and his responsibility for Die Neue Zeit, the leading intellectual journal of socialism and Marxism from its founding in 1883 until the outbreak of the First World War, Kautsky was, after Engels, the most important Marxian theorist in the world for the thirty years from the death of Marx to the war. -
History of Social Theory
Fall 2013 Sociology 101 Michael Burawoy HISTORY OF SOCIAL THEORY A course on the history of social theory can be presented with two different emphases -- as intellectual history or as theoretical tradition. In the first approach the classics are examined in relation to their political, social, economic and particularly their cultural context. In the second approach the classics are systematically compared to one another to show both similarities and differences but also to place them in some developmental sequence. In this course we shall primarily follow the second approach although it will still be essential to situate the ideas of any given writer in his or her historical milieu. It is the hypothesis of this course that within our field there are essentially three theoretical traditions: a marxist tradition, a sociological tradition and an emergent third tradition that transcends both Marxism and sociology. In this view sociology developed out of a critical dialogue with the writings of Marx and Engels and the Marxists that followed them, while this third tradition, often referred to as postmodernism, seeks to go beyond the optimistic accounts of both marxism and sociology. Accordingly, in the first semester we shall examine the Marxist tradition, beginning with Marx and Engels, passing rapidly through German Marxism (Kautsky, Bernstein, Luxemburg), stopping at Russian Marxism to study Lenin's treatise on the transition from capitalism to communism, moving on to Antonio Gramsci as the foremost "Western Marxist" and from there dealing with Third World Marxism as represented by Frantz Fanon. Next semester we will work through key representatives of the sociological tradition, Durkheim and Weber, followed by Foucault, our “postmodern” thinker, before ending with the feminism of Simone de Beauvoir, followed by those who have worked in that tradition in the United States – Catherine MacKinnon and Patricia Hill Collins. -
