The band consists of guitarist/singer Chad Petree, singer Carah Faye Charnow, keyboardist Jeremy Dawson and drummer Mikey Martin. Their first studio album We Are Pilots (2006) had three singles in the top 30 of the Alternative Songs Chart[1][2][3] and was nominated for Best Electronic /Dance Album at the 50th Grammy Awards. [5] Their second album Season of Poison (2008) had two singles in the top 30 of the Alternative Songs Chart. [6] [7] History 2002–2006: Formation and We Are Pilots Main Article: We Are Pilots The band was founded in 2002 by bassist and keyboardist, Jeremy Dawson, and singer and guitarist Chad Petree. Both had known each other for years growing up in Shawnee, Oklahoma and working together on previous music projects such as Cloud2Ground and Slyder. [9] After these projects, they went under a short time and continued to make music together, eventually enlisting singer Carah Faye Faye to be their female vocalist, as well as drummer Mikey Martin. [4] Shiny Toy Guns became popular in California and on the internet through networks on their MySpace page. In January 2005, they released their first album We Are Pilots through the stormwest international label. [10] That summer, they toured the United States in support of their album. We Are Pilots was re-recorded and reissued with a revised track list by sidecho in November 2005. [11] The band signed with Universal Records in June 2006 and released a third, final version of We Are Pilots on October 17, 2006. [12] Le Disko was the first single, You Are the One was the second single, and Rainy Monday was the third. However, Don't Cry Out was originally announced as the third single. [citation needed] 2007–2008: Season of Poison Main article: Season of Poison October 29, 2007, the band appeared as The Shinys on the children's TV series Yo Gabba Gabba!. [14] They performed a sequence called The House of Spooks. We Are Pilots received a Grammy Award nomination on December 6, 2007 in the Best Electronic/Dance Album category, but lost to The Chemical Brothers. [15] In August 2008, it was revealed that Carah Faye Charnow was no longer part of the band and had been replaced by Sisely Treasure,[16] whose song appears on the band's second album, Season of Poison. Carah Faye Charnow went on to run a new band, Versant, in Sweden. [17] Season of Poison was released through Universal Records on November 4, 2008. [18] On September 2, 2008, Ricochet was released. as the first single. It hit No. 17 on the Alternative Songs Chart,[19] which is the highest band ever reached with a single on the Alternative Songs chart. Shiny Toy Guns released their second Season of Poison single, Ghost Town, on January 30, 2009, which reached #26 on the Alternative Songs Chart. [8] 2009–2010: Girls Le Disko Main article: Girls Le Disko In February 2009, the band introduced their Fancorps Street Team as a way for their fans to become more involved in the band. [20] In March, the band released their first animated video for their single, Ghost Town. [21] The animation was completed by well-known illustrator Glen Hanson. [22] At the end of March 2009, the band performed a cover of Peter Schilling's Major Tom (Coming Home). Originally used in a television commercial for the 2010 Lincoln MKZ,[23] the song was released as a single on May 5, 2009. [24] In September, the band covered Blue Öyster Cult's Burnin' for You for another Lincoln commercial 2010 Lincoln MKS. [25] In the spring, at a show in Milwaukee, Shiny Toy Guns said their next album would be released sometime in late 2010. [citation needed] In 2009, Jeremy Dawson admitted via shiny toy guns official website that while he believes Season of Poison is a great it was too different, too soon, and promised a return to their electronic roots for the band's third album. [citation needed] On December 15, 2009, the remix album Girls Le Disko was released on Ultra Records. [26] Near the end of January 2010, Rocketship 2010 was released as a Myspace download featured on Coca-Cola's Formula for Happiness free weekly download. [27] Also, in late January, Shiny Toy Guns teamed up with Lincoln again to produce a music video for Major Tom. [28] In March, a music video was released through Ultra Records for Rocketship in 2010. [29] Rocketship was released as a single on iTunes on April 20, 2010. [30] In late fall 2010, Shiny Toy Guns announced a planned December 2010[31] release of an LP[32] tentatively titled III. [33] According to Jeremy, fans will fall in love with what we [Shiny Toy Guns] are currently starting to work on on this post. On their Facebook page,[34] Shiny Toy Guns announced that Speaking Japanese would become a single on the next album. December passed without an album drop. Meanwhile, Chad and Jeremy were working on a side project called Mirror Machines,[35] which has since been postponed in favor of Shiny Toy Guns again. 2011–present: III Main article: III (Shiny Toy Guns album) Early January 2011, Shiny Toy Gun's official website featured a countdown that ended at midnight between February 10 and February 11. [36] Below the countdown read the following text: you know what you hope is the end of this timer, but you can't be sure. and it doesn't matter.. because we will be together. The quote is a modified version of a quote from Christopher Nolan's film, Inception. [37] In addition, the piano riff accompanying the countdown reflects a scale from Time, a song composed by Hans Zimmer for the Soundtrack to Inception. [38] At the end of January, Shiny Toy Guns relaunched its fan-incorporation street team, The Satellites,[39] stating, our closest allies and the most important people in our world are the 2011 SATELLITE team. Join us, and become part of the driving force of Shiny Toy Guns on a first-hand basis. Together we will reach the eyes and ears of the world. In early February, Sisely Treasure released a single That You Like, on its website. [40] On February 7, Shiny Toy Guns announced on Facebook[41] that Sisely was no longer part of the band. On February 11, 2011, a video posted on the band's website announced that former band member Carah Faye Charnow would be rejoining the band along with her husband, Daniel Johansson, for the upcoming album III. [42] The video featured the song, If I Lost You (Orchestral Mix). [42] Shortly after the end of the countdown, Versant posted on Facebook, Boys and Girls, Carah Faye and Daniel Johansson, of your beloved Versant, joins Shiny Toy Guns for album number three. Please enjoy this piece of music history! Here's another Versant's not going anywhere! [43] On March 3, 2011, The Sun was released, the first single from III,[44] [45] During a webchat, Jeremy explained that they hope III will be ready for a May or June 2011 release, but that it may come later this summer. [46] During an interview on SXSW, Jeremy confirmed that the band was still hoping for a release in mid-June, but that mid-August would be more realistic. [47] When asked in an interview with LIVE 105, however, Jeremy probably said [say] November. [48] During the Phoenix Pride Festival in April 2011, another new song, Stay Down, was also sung. On March 1, 2012, in an interview with speedcast.com, Jeremy and Carah announced that the third album would be released in July, with the first single released in May, along with the start of a tour. [49] On April 25, 2012, it was announced, via Instagram, that III will end to be mixed May 6.
