Tests of a skunk found in the Potter Valley area this month came back positive for rabies, as did tests of a fox caught in the same area in November 2007. According to the Centers for Disease Con- trol, rabies is a viral disease that can cause cen- tral nervous system damage and death. Rabies is most commonly transmitted by being bitten by an infected animal, most commonly skunks, foxes, raccoons or bats. Early symptoms of rabies in humans are nonspecific, consisting of fever, headache and general malaise. As the disease progresses, neurological symptoms appear and may include: insomnia, anxiety, confusion, slight or partial paralysis, excitation, hallucinations, agi- tation, hypersalivation, difficulty swallowing and hydrophobia (fear of water). Death usually occurs within days of the onset of symptoms, according to the CDC. Most human exposure to rabies comes from contact with wild animals.
