Abstract Novel habitats, rare plants and root traits. by Paula Ann Greer The loss of native plant species through habitat loss has been happening in NZ since the arrival of humans. This is especially true in Canterbury where less than 1% of the lowland plains are believed to be covered in remnant native vegetation. Rural land uses are changing and farm intensification is creating novel habitats, including farm irrigation earth dams. Dam engineers prefer not to have plants growing on dams. Earth dams are consented for 100 years, they could be used to support threatened native plants. Within the farm conversion of the present study dams have created an average of 1.7 hectares of ‘new land’ on their outside slope alone, which is the area of my research. -

If a gate is open or closed leave it that way. • A farm is the owner’s livelihood and if they say no dogs, then please respect this. • When driving on riverbeds keep to marked tracks or park on the bank and walk to your fishing spot. • Never push in on a pool occupied by another angler. If you are in any doubt have a chat and work out who goes where. • However, if agreed to share the pool then always enter behind any angler already there. • Move upstream or downstream with every few casts (unless you are alone). -

He published the book himself with support from Selwyn District Council’s Creative Communities Scheme. Over the next two years, Neville distributed the 205 copies of the book via the Manaaki Whenua Press Bookstore and at the Lincoln Farmers & Craft Market. By the time of his death in June 2016, the book was well and truly sold out. Neville had been President and subsequently Patron of Lincoln & Districts Historical Society (L&DHS newsletter, Issue 42, December 2016). He left the rights to his book and his research materials to the Society. When studying the computer files for the book Fitzgerald’s Town – Lincoln in the 19th Century, it became apparent that the published version had fewer pictures and plans than Neville had originally intended. Subsequently, as a memorial to Neville, the Society decided, with the agreement of the Moar family, to produce a second edition. -

MOLLOY: PROBLEMS FOR NATURE CONSERVATION IN A CLOSELY SETTI.ED AREA POSSIBILITIES AND PROBLEMS FOR NATURE CONSERVATION IN A CLOSELY SETTLED AREA Botany Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Re,lcarch, Christchurch SUMMARY: The distribution of parks and reserves in the Canterbury Land District is outlined, and attention is drawn to the predominance of forest and Ir.oun.tainvegetation within the present network of nature conservation. Other natural communities in the land district are then described, and their Dotential as ecological or scientific reserves is reviewed. In this paper, emphasis is placed on some of the lesser-known communities that still survive in the closely settled environment of the Canterbury Plains. The problems associated with the acquisition and maintenance of reserves are briefly discussed. EXISTING PARKS AND RESERVES Scenic and allied reserves in the Canterbury Land District are concentrated on Banks Peninsula and in the foothills, front ranges and intermontane areas of the Southern Alps. In addition, there are two National Parks (Mount Cook and Arthurs Pass), the new Craigieburn State Forcst Park and Peel Forest Park (also listed here as Scenic Re- serve No. 45), all in mountain districts (Figs. Abstract Sediment trace elements in lake cores as indicators of rural land use change in six selected New Zealand lakes by Lughano Mwenibabu Ongoing concerns of water quality degradation in New Zealand lakes in agricultural catchments, mean that it is important to develop an understanding of both past and present conditions of lake water quality. Lake sediments can provide reliable natural records of catchment land use change, and can be used to assess the long term impacts of anthropogenic activities on lakes. Large scale studies of lake sediment cores, such as the New Zealand- wide Lakes380 research programme, can help to inform future water management policies or strategies to improve water quality in lakes.
