INTRODUCTION 1.1 Overview This excursion provides an overview of the geology and tectonics of the Waitaki valley, including some features of its hydroelectric dams. The excursion highlight is Aviemore Dam, constructed in the 1960s across a major fault, the subsequent (mid-1990s – early 2000s) discovery and quantification of late Quaternary displacement on this fault and the resulting engineering mitigation of the dam foundation fault displacement hazard. The excursion provides insights to the nature and expression of faults in the Waitaki landscape, and the character and ages of the Waitaki alluvial terrace sequences. -

Paradoxically, despite a long history of inquiry into spit and barrier formation, understanding of the dynamics and sedimentary history of tombolos over the Holocene timescale is poor. At Tyre and Alexandria we demonstrate that these rare coastal features are the heritage of a long history of natural morphodynamic forcing and human impacts. In 332 BC, following a protracted seven-month siege of the city, Alexander the Great's engineers cleverly exploited a shallow sublittoral sand bank to seize the island fortress; Tyre's causeway served as a prototype for Alexandria's Heptastadium built a few months later. We report stratigraphic and geomorphological data from the two sand spits, proposing a chronostratigraphic model of tombolo evolution. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. April 2013 Professor Julian Orford Queen’s University, Belfast Pagham Spit Advice 2013 Natural England Advice Request 1) Could the two recycling operations: i) 2010 and ii) 2012-13 have had a detrimental impact on the site’s functioning and its geomorphological interest? 2) What are the best sources for the current sediment recycling proposals? Note two joint operations to be considered: i) HW erosion at western Pagham and ii) re- armouring of the exposed armoured groyne 3) Is the channel likely to close? 4) What are the possible ways in which the spit might develop, both in the short and longer term? Of these, which is the most likely? 5) Is the rock armour the most effective way to protect the properties? 6) Our current view is that the on-going evolution of the Church Norton spit is a key component in the conservation of the geomorphological interest of the SSSI. Are there other elements we should also be concerned about? Glossary Berm: A constructive wave-built beach face feature generally occurring at the swash reach associated with any particular high tide position. The Wrybill is a threatenedplover endemic to New Zealandand unique in havinga bill curvedto the right.It is specializedfor breedingon bareshingle in thebraided riverbeds of Canterburyand Otago in the SouthIsland. After breeding,almost the entirepopulation migrates north and wintersin the harboursaround Auckland. The speciesis classifiedas Vulnerable. Based on countsof winteringflocks, the population currently appears to number4,500-5,000 individuals.However, countingproblems mean that trendsare difficult to determine. The mainthreats to theWrybill arebelieved to be predationon thebreeding grounds, degradation of breeding habitat,and floodingof nests.In a recentstudy in the MackenzieBasin, predation by introducedmammals (mainly stoats,cats and possibly ferrets) had a substantialimpact on Wrybill survivaland productivity. Prey- switchingby predatorsfollowing the introductionof rabbithaemorrhagic disease in 1997 probablyincreased predationrates on breedingwaders. A recentstudy of stoatsin the TasmanRiver showedthat 11% of stoat densexamined contained Wrybill remains.Breeding habitat is beinglost in somerivers and degraded in oth- ers,mainly by waterabstraction and flow manipulation,invasion of weeds,and human recreational use. Flood- ing causessome loss of nestsbut is alsobeneficial, keeping nesting areas weed-free. The breedingrange of the speciesappears to be contractingand fragmenting, with the bulk of the popula- tion now breedingin three large catchments. -

Maidment Waterways Centre for Freshwater Research University of Canterbury 14 March 2018 Goals of the Exercise This exercise shows how to develop a hydrologic base map for a catchment showing the catchment boundary and the rivers and streams within it. This is done in two ways – for the Rakaia river in Canterbury using the NZ Digital River Network, and for the Puriri river catchment in Papua-New Guinea using ArcGIS Online ready to use Hydro Services. Computer and Data Requirements To carry out this exercise, you need to have a computer, which runs ArcGIS Desktop version 10.5. This exercise will also work with version 10.4.1 if you do not have access to Version 10.5. You will need a login and password for the University of Canterbury Organizational Account for ArcGIS Online. Does this affect the groundwater quality? l : NOV 2005 ii Abstract The quality of groundwater beneath land surfaces can be influenced by activities carried out on the land. The combination of these activities and effects of the physical environment can cause groundwater contamination, being the threshold at which human or animal health is at risk. The physical environment can induce unacceptable levels of chemicals to groundwater and these may be measured by indicators such as pH and hardness. Particular activities leading to contamination in rural environments include farming activities utilising irrigation and chemicals to enhance production. An outcome of these activities may include the disposal of animal wastes which is a direct contaminant input having the potential to reach groundwater. Settlement patterns, in particular small settlements which are unsewered, can also contribute to groundwater contamination through sewage disposal from septic tanks. This thesis explores how these activities may influence groundwater quality of the Morven, Glenavy and Ikawai area in South Canterbury, New Zealand. In doing so it utilises groundwater measurements taken by the Canterbury Regional Council from 90 wells in February and May 1996. The results from these measur~ments are related using a Geographic Information System to various human activities, namely farm type, irrigation, waste disposal and settlement patterns and two physical parameters, soil permeability and groundwater depth or piezometric surface. -

This report was commissioned to investigate issues relating to establishing appropriate flow monitoring points on the Wairau River to implement the flow sharing and rationing provisions set out in the current Wairau Awatere Resource Management Plan (WARMP) and achieve a relevant and meaningful environmental flow regime over the length of the Wairau River. Specification of flow regimes to maintain proper functioning of river ecosystems and related in-stream values require: A minimum flow to fulfil water quality and habitat requirements Allocation limits, or flow sharing rules, to maintain ecologically relevant flow variability and avoid long periods of flat-lining of the minimum flows. -

Island Wakes in the Southern California Bight R

[1] Wind- and current-induced island wakes were investigated using a multiplatform approach of in situ, remote sensing, and numerical model simulations for the Southern California Bight (SCB). Island wind wakes are a result of sheltering from the wind, with weak wind mixing, strong heat storage, and consequent high sea surface temperature (SST). Wind wakes around Santa Catalina Island are most persistent during spring and summer months. Current wakes, caused by the disruption of the poleward traveling California Countercurrent, induce eddies to form off the north end of Catalina Island, and these move poleward every 9–12 days. Current wake eddies induce strong mixing, with low SST and high-density sea surface signatures, whereas wind wakes induce high sea surface temperature signatures associated with the formation of a well-defined shallow thermocline. Current wake eddies vary from 1 to 30 km in diameter. From numerical solutions we predicted the frequency of occurrence of current-induced wakes off Santa Catalina Island. Wind wakes were also observed off all the other islands of the SCB as seen from the analysis of synthetic aperture radar data. Time series analysis of the island mass effect phenomenon has shown a concurrence of low SST and high sea surface chlorophyll for Santa Catalina, San Nicholas, and San Clemente islands that might be related to the seasonality of the California Current and California Countercurrent. -
