Najeeds bad luck started on the day he arrived in Saudi Arabia as a migrant from India seeking employment. Not knowing who his employer would be, he was hijacked by a roaming individual whom he thought was the employer. His suffering started as soon as they arrived at the abductors destination - an animal farm in the desert - where Najeems job would be to tend the goats and other animals. He immediately became a slave worker under a cruel slave-master. This situation lasted for over three years.Still more suffering awaited him in the desert as he and his two companions attempted to escape through the uncharted sea of sand to the outside world.I felt Najeeds pain physically throughout his ordeal. His is a story of endurance against all odds.But what happened to Ibrahim Khadiri. His disappearance in the desert seems to suggest that he might have been an angel in human form sent to rescue Najeed.The book more than met my expectations. It aims in analyzing his crisis on the basis of economic and social aspects and his perception as a ‘human being’, which reflects the basic theme of existentialism. Here Najeeb is in an existential crisis because he is alien to the land and his new to the profession of a shepherd, tending goats in a desert land. He has no kindred and feels his life meaningless and absurd- his consciousness and awareness of his life as nothing as he has no choice. His movements are controlled, supervised and surveilled throughout the day where he is detained. The book goes on to chronicle his escape from the cruelty of the barren landscape. Najeeb, a Keralite, struggling with the insufficient income he earns from sand mining is elated when he comes to know of a visa for sale. By mortgaging, selling and borrowing he secures the money to reach the city of his dreams. Najeeb along with Hakeem another boy who received visa, sets to 'the outside world’ together (GD 39). The city of dreams soon turns out to be a nightmare, when they are taken in by the wrong arbab after waiting hours for their sponsor in the Riyadh airport. Hakeem separated, Najeeb realizes what the future holds in store for him. His job is to herd and milk goats, “Rows of goats, undulating like a sea’, in addition to filling water, hay, wheat, fodder in the containers for goats and camels” (Goat Days 59). Ever since then a myth was in making regarding Kerala’s economy and its key source of income- remittances. Gulf migrants, many of whom were from the working and the lower-middle classes, gradually gained social status which led to the popular belief of the 'Gulf man' being affluent. These gulf dreams have also found its expression in various Malayalam cinema and literature. The objective of this paper is to portray a contrary perspective to this popular belief amidst Keralites on the subject of pravasi (the expatriate) through Najeeb, the protagonist of the novel Goat Days written by Benyamin. The paper aims to explore this alternate world that the protagonist of Benyamin’s book encounters. Based on an oral account of a real survivor, Benyamin challenges these “gulf dreams”. The paper will study the symbolism of the goat, the trials of the exile and his gradual disintegration of selfhood and dreams. So writes Benyamin, a renowned Diasporic writer of Malayalam, possibly the first among his diasporic contemporaries to receive critical and public acclaim back in his homeland. The writer, a native of Kulanada, resides in the Gulf region of Asia, where a large number of Indian diaspora live. He works there for a private company and thus he forms the prototypical representative of the Kerala diaspora.This paper endeavours to form a critique of Benyamin’s Goat Days (Aadujeevitham) andEMS and a Little Girl (EMSumOruPenkuttyum) as writings that confront the identity crises faced by South Asian Diaspora. In EMSumoruPenkuttyum, an anthology of short stories, different narratives differentiate between Diasporic life of both the political refugees and the migrant workers, in a way that would make one rethink the Diasporic stereotypes. Aadujeevitham speaks of the oft- unspoken aspect of migrant life, where one is forced to shed all his humanity and self-respect,in order to provide support and sustenance with his family back home.

The word ‘translation’ consists of two Latin words – trans meaning ‘across’ and lation meaning ‘to take’ (derived from the Latin verb transfero, transfere, translatum). Eugene Nida describes translation as a science, Theodore Savory terms it an art, and Eric Jacobson visualizes it as a craft (Das 167). Noted translation theorist Paul Engle wrote in the 1980s, “As this world shrinks together like an aging orange and all peoples in all cultures move closer together…it may be that the crucial sentence for our remaining years on earth may be very simply: TRANSLATE OR DIE. The lives of every creature on the earth may one day depend on the instant and accurate translation of one word” (Engle and Engle 2). Unlike the West, classical Indian translation is characterized by loose adaptation and creative re-telling rather than close translation. As K. Satchidanandan observes, “India’s culture of translation dates back to pre- colonial times that had witnessed several kinds of literary translation, though our ancients may not claim to be doing so. This is perhaps natural to multilingual culture where poets… easily moved from one language to another without even being aware of it and translators did not fear being executed for deviations as in the West….
