Najib's dream was to work in the Gulf countries and earn enough money to send home. But, he achieves his dream only to be driven by a series of incidents in the slave-owning existence of grazing goats in the middle of the Saudi desert. Eventually, Najib comes up with a dangerous scheme to avoid his prison in the desert. Penguin Books India introduction describes the novel as a strange and bitter comedy of Najib's life in the desert and a universal story of loneliness and alienation. The English translation of the novel appeared on the long list of the 2012 Man Asian Literary Prize and shortlisted for the 2013 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. He also won the Kerala Literary Benyamin Award in 2009. The plot summary of the book is divided into four parts (Prison, Desert, Escape and Asylum). Najib Muhammad, the protagonist of the novel, a young man from Arattupuji in Haripad, Kerala, recently married and dreams of a better job in any of the Gulf countries. After a few hastened, he finally set foot in Saudi Arabia. However, at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, he falls into a trap and harasses a wealthy Arab livestock farm manager to take care of his farm. He is used as a slave owner and shepherd and is assigned to care for goats, sheep and camels for almost three and a half years in the remote deserts of Saudi Arabia. He is forced to do a backbreaking job, kept him half-starved and denied water to wash and suffers unimaginably. The brutal farm manager keeps Najib under control with a gun and binoculars and often hits him with a belt. In a country where he does not know language, places or people, he is far from any human interaction. Najib is constantly beginning to identify with goats. He considers himself one of them. His dreams, desires, vengeance and hopes begin to become one with them. He talks to them, eats with them, sleeps with them and practically lives the life of a goat. However, he holds a ray of hope that will bring freedom and put an end to his suffering someday. Finally, one night with the help of Ibrahim Khadiri, a Somali worker on a nearby farm, Najib Mohammed and his friend Hakim escape from a terrible life to freedom. But, the trio fumbles through the desert for a few days, and young Hakim dies of thirst and fatigue. Finally, Ibrahim Khadiri and Najib manage to find their way to Al-Bataa, Riyadh, where Najib himself is arrested by the civilian police to be deported to India. Najib is being held in Sumesi prison for several months before Saudi authorities deport him to India. The main characters play Benjamin's media about his novel The Goat Days by Najib Mohammed (prisoner number 13858 in Sumesi prison, Saudi Arabia), the protagonist of the novel, spent three and a half years (April 4, 1992 -August 13, 1995) on a remote farm in the desert of Saudi Arabia.

It aims in analyzing his crisis on the basis of economic and social aspects and his perception as a ‘human being’, which reflects the basic theme of existentialism. Here Najeeb is in an existential crisis because he is alien to the land and his new to the profession of a shepherd, tending goats in a desert land. He has no kindred and feels his life meaningless and absurd- his consciousness and awareness of his life as nothing as he has no choice. The absurdity of his life, aloofness and despair all are caused by fate. I. His movements are controlled, supervised and surveilled throughout the day where he is detained. The book goes on to chronicle his escape from the cruelty of the barren landscape. Najeeb, a Keralite, struggling with the insufficient income he earns from sand mining is elated when he comes to know of a visa for sale. By mortgaging, selling and borrowing he secures the money to reach the city of his dreams. Najeeb along with Hakeem another boy who received visa, sets to 'the outside world’ together (GD 39). The city of dreams soon turns out to be a nightmare, when they are taken in by the wrong arbab after waiting hours for their sponsor in the Riyadh airport. Hakeem separated, Najeeb realizes what the future holds in store for him. His job is to herd and milk goats, “Rows of goats, undulating like a sea’, in addition to filling water, hay, wheat, fodder in the containers for goats and camels” (Goat Days 59). Ever since then a myth was in making regarding Kerala’s economy and its key source of income- remittances. Gulf migrants, many of whom were from the working and the lower-middle classes, gradually gained social status which led to the popular belief of the 'Gulf man' being affluent. These gulf dreams have also found its expression in various Malayalam cinema and literature. The objective of this paper is to portray a contrary perspective to this popular belief amidst Keralites on the subject of pravasi (the expatriate) through Najeeb, the protagonist of the novel Goat Days written by Benyamin. The paper aims to explore this alternate world that the protagonist of Benyamin’s book encounters. Based on an oral account of a real survivor, Benyamin challenges these “gulf dreams”. The paper will study the symbolism of the goat, the trials of the exile and his gradual disintegration of selfhood and dreams. So writes Benyamin, a renowned Diasporic writer of Malayalam, possibly the first among his diasporic contemporaries to receive critical and public acclaim back in his homeland. The writer, a native of Kulanada, resides in the Gulf region of Asia, where a large number of Indian diaspora live. He works there for a private company and thus he forms the prototypical representative of the Kerala diaspora.This paper endeavours to form a critique of Benyamin’s Goat Days (Aadujeevitham) andEMS and a Little Girl (EMSumOruPenkuttyum) as writings that confront the identity crises faced by South Asian Diaspora. In EMSumoruPenkuttyum, an anthology of short stories, different narratives differentiate between Diasporic life of both the political refugees and the migrant workers, in a way that would make one rethink the Diasporic stereotypes. Aadujeevitham speaks of the oft- unspoken aspect of migrant life, where one is forced to shed all his humanity and self-respect,in order to provide support and sustenance with his family back home.
