Today, many people are interested in genealogy, and these people trace their personal life stories back many generations. In some cases, it is difficult to trace the ancestry of American slaves of the 19th century. They were often bought and sold at auctions, oftentimes resold, and their families were broken up with no one keeping accurate records. Since its earliest days, the Christian community has proclaimed its notable saints as heroes who lead the march into Heaven.     MARY WARD LECTURE FEBRUARY 11TH 2009 CAMBRIDGE DIVINITY SCHOOL On the feast of the Annunciation, 1586 Margaret Clitherow, a butcher’s wife of York, suffered the horrific peine forte et dure of being crushed to death for harbouring a Catholic priest. This barbaric punishment was the legal sanction imposed on those who refused to testify during trial. Margaret’s silence was both a denial that she was guilty of any crime and an attempt to save her family and neighbours from having to testify. Though silent in death, Margaret’s life story resounded throughout the recusant Catholic community and beyond, told by John Mush, a priest whom she had sheltered. Mush was her spiritual director and later that of Mary Ward, whose cousin Francis Ingleby, another priest sheltered by Margaret Clitherow, died a martyr’s death on the Knavesmire in York in June of the same year. This web of connections was part of an extended network of recusant women and men whose enforced silence was broken by the irrepressible force of story and memory. This study looks at the theme of silence in the life of Mary Ward and those who sought to keep her story alive. Positively, contemplative silence operated as the ground of Mary’s remarkable vocation. Negatively, it was imposed on her and on her memory long after her death by a church that failed to understand the specific and universal value of that vocation. It stems from a more general silence imposed historically on women both in the church and in society as a whole.

Suffix: VV\ Erl ABSTRACT CATHERINE BERENICE MERRELL 2001 THE LATE VICTORIAN ROMAN CATHOLIC PERIODICAL PRESS AND ATTITUDES TO THE 'PROBLEM OF THE POOR' This thesis explores the attitudes of the Roman Catholic periodical press of the late Victorian period to 'the problem of the poor' and various responses to it, including Socialism and Trades Unionism. The study is confined to the English press and to five periodicals: the Tablet, a weekly newspaper and unofficial voice of the clergy; the Dublin Review, a prestigious quarterly; the Month, the organ of the Jesuits in England; the Downside Review, issued tennly and an important voice of old Catholicism; and Merry England, a social and literary monthly magaztne. The study, after briefly establishing the provenance of the periodicals against the background of wider press expansion, and 'the problem of the poor' as was brought before the reading public, examines the reactions of the Catholic writers to the new responses to poverty. The ways attitudes changed over the course of two decades, and the extent to which the writers reached a common response, are explored. In the course of this exploration, the great extent to which the Catholic writers, in their thinking on possible practical 'solutions' to the problem of the poor, were influenced by an idealisation of the charitable roles of the trades guilds and monasteries of the Middle Ages is demonstrated.
