St. Irenaeus Parish, Park Forest, Illinois February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Fr. Augustus Tolton is recognized as the first recognized African American priest in the United States. His story begins in slavery in Missouri. His parents - Peter and Martha Tolton were married and their children were baptized Catholic. (a rarity among those who were enslaved) His father later escaped to join the Union Arm where he died and his mother with her three children escaped across the Mississippi arriving in Quincy, IL (Illinois was a free state, Missouri was a slave state). His father had died in the Civil War in 1861. He was baptized Catholic in MO and received his first communion at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Quincy. At sixteen years old he felt called to become a priest. He studied at Quincy College but when he wished to enter a seminary, none in the United States would accept him. Through hard work and financial support from benefactors, he was accepted at the seminary in Rome. He was ordained on April 24, 1886. He returned to Quincy and was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Church. The priests in the area did not accept him, while many Catholics – black and white – admired his preaching, compassion ministerial presence and faith Archbishop Feehan of Chicago heard of this holy man and invited him to Chicago to become pastor of the first Church for Black Catholics in Chicago, St. Monica’s. He arrived in Chicago on December 19, 1889. He was well accepted by the priests and people in Chicago, nevertheless he was alone in working in the poorest areas of Chicago. His ministry was short-lived for on July 1897, while returning home from a retreat, on an extremely hot day, he fell ill from heat – stroke and later died at Mercy Hospital. He was 43 years old. His official cause for canonization was opened in Rome in 2010. Bishop Joseph N. Perry was named the postulator (official person in charge of the research and promotion of his cause). The Tolton Guild was formed to officially promote the cause through education, prayer, media, and other forms of communication. In 2011, he was named Servant of God Augustus Tolton. On March 18, 2018, the historical consultants to the Vatican Congregation for Causes of Saints reviewed the official POSITIO on the Servant of God Father Augustus Tolton and voted unanimously that the Cause can move forward to eventually make its way to the desk of the Holy Father. When and if Pope Francis approves their findings, he will be named Venerable. (2nd stage of a 4 stage process - Servant of God, Venerable, Blessed and Saint) For more information contact Dr. C. Lynne (McCarren) Hostetter Please Make Your Gift to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word” This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The Annual Catholic Appeal theme, “Come, Follow Me…and Share the Word,” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference! All parishes communities participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our parishes, schools, and ministries to deliver needed services.
