Deininger, M.A., Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation provides a framework in which to consider how collective memory, national identity, and literature insist on a political vision of the nation. The works in question are examples of the enduring impact of pivotal events on the French literary tradition. This study takes a diachronic approach to studying literature written during moments of crisis in France. It examines works dealing with the Revolutionary Terror (1793-1794), the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), and World War II’s drôle de guerre (1940). The writers chosen for this dissertation all use the rhetoric of literature as a way to think through the crisis and imagine ways to respond to it. In particular, this study explores how fear, power, and indoctrination are used to represent ideals of French national identity and the chaos surrounding earth-shattering events. Theories of historical representation, nationalism, and event fidelity provide the framework to reveal underlying political perspectives in the works studied. The chapters of this dissertation are organized chronologically, beginning with the Terror. Within the first chapter, the focus is on the Marquis de Sade’s La Philosophie dans le boudoir, particularly its fabricated political pamphlet, “Français, encore un effort si vous voulez être républicains.” Sade’s work is juxtaposed with that of a virtually unknown émigré writer, Louis de Bruno’s Lioncel, ou l’Émigré, nouvelle historique. The next event studied is the Franco-Prussian War, and the resulting Paris Commune. Victor Hugo’s Quatrevingt-Treize and Jules Vern’es Le Chemin de France are both set during the Revolutionary War, but address iv events taking place in nineteenth-century France. The last chapter deals with the initial period of defeat and occupation in World War II. Both Jean-Paul Sartre’s Nativity play, Bariona ou le fils du tonnerre and Marc Bloch’s wartime testimonial L’Étrange défaite encourage Frenchmen to continue the fight against foreign aggressors. The authors in question attempted to give the nation cultural roots, or shared lieux de mémoire, in the aftermath of traumatic events. This study shows how writers use texts to mediate chronological and ideological distance between events and to recreate what no longer exists, in hopes of defining a new way forward for the nation. v Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact.

Once a busy state penitentiary, it only held seven prisoners when it was stormed. The seven prisoners comprised four forgers, two lunatics and one aristocrat. The aristocrat was Comte Hubert de Solages, whose family had asked for him to be imprisoned for committing incest with his sister.

Earlier, after the bombs fell on Europe, there was not exactly calm after the storm. Even though a renewed hope in peace briefly followed the end of the war, imme- diately after there was the overwhelming prospect of rebuilding Europe after the devastation it had endured.3 As I attempt to show, the nonlinear historical progression following WWII provided 1952 Paris with a situation rife with philosophical conflict. The philo- sophical (and, in a sense, political) debate that Camus and Sartre had in Les Temps modernes in mid-1952 was indicative of the his- torical moment, much like the philosophical conversations that Samuel Beckett engaged with in Waiting for Godot. I argue that Waiting for Godot explores the same (epistemological) dilemma that Merleau-Ponty says defined his era: being versus doing. Post-WWII France As Tony Judt argues, three problems were in the forefront in the first 18 months following the Allied victory: a lack of food, a M. Y. Bennett, Words, Space, and the Audience © Michael Y. Bennett 2012 82 W ORDS,SPACE, AND THE A UDIENCE devastated German economy, and the lack of American dollars.4 Judt sums up the sense of hopelessness that most Europeans felt in 1947 by quoting Janet Flanner, who was reporting form Paris in March 1947: There has been a climate of indubitable and growing malaise in Paris, and perhaps all over Europe, as if the French people, or all European people, expected something to happen, or worse, expected nothing to happen.5 Europe and Europeans certainly felt a sense of despair: the sense of despair so often read in plays from the “absurdists,” if you will, like Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.

    Four SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR AS MEDIATOR FOR FOREIGN LITERATURE IN LES TEMPS MODERNES Stève Bessac-Vaure This chapter studies the role of Simone de Beauvoir in Les Temps Modernes, a French journal edited by Jean-Paul Sartre. Beauvoir played a pivotal role, being in charge of literary publications. This function allowed her to publish works of numerous foreign authors according to her existentialist conception of literature, a conception that mixes philosophy and fiction to promote human freedom. By favoring foreign existentialist literature, Beauvoir contributes to the development of a transnational literary movement. She is in stark opposition to another inter- national literary movement, socialist realism, whereas Sartre was a Communist fellow traveler. 1. Introduction According to Nicole Racine, while “female intellectuals were long left out of intellectual history” (2003, p. 341, translation mine), Simone de Beauvoir endures as one of the most renowned, analyzed French intellectuals. Howev- er, her role in Les Temps Modernes—a politico-cultural journal edited by Jean-Paul Sartre—remains underappreciated. At its inception, in 1945, Beau- voir was on the editorial board along with Raymond Aron, Colette Audry, René Etiemble, Michel Leiris, Albert Ollivier, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jean Paulhan, Jean Pouillon, Pierre Uri, and Sartre. The intention of the journal was to enable readers—intellectuals and students alike—to understand the world by publishing literature and studies on international events. Contributors to Les Temps Modernes promoted dem- ocratic socialism with national independence, then called neutralism, a politi- cal movement that attracted numerous French intellectuals. In 1948–1949, neutralist intellectuals founded the Rassemblement Démocratique Révolu- tionnaire (RDR), which was a political failure.

    06.puchner 4/19/05 2:28 PM Page 111 Martin Puchner Sade’s Theatrical Passions The Theater of the Revolution The Marquis de Sade entered theater history in 1964 when the Royal Shakespeare Company, under the direction of Peter Brook, presented a play by the unknown author Peter Weiss entitled, The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade.1 Marat/Sade, as the play is usually called, became an extraordinary success story.2 By com- bining narrators with techniques developed in a multi-year workshop entitled “Theater of Cruelty,” Marat/Sade managed to link the two modernist visionaries of the theater whom everybody had considered to be irreconcilable opposites: Bertolt Brecht and Antonin Artaud. Marat/Sade not only fabricated a new revolutionary theater from the vestiges of modernism, it also coincided with a philosophical and cul- tural revision of the French revolution that had begun with Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer’s The Dialectics of Enlightenment (1944/69) and found a preliminary culmination in Michel Foucault’s History of Madness (1972). At the same time, the revival of Sade was fu- eled by the first complete publication of his work in French (1967) and by Roland Barthes’ landmark study, Sade Fourier Loyola (1971).3 Marat/Sade had thus hit a theatrical and intellectual nerve. Sade, however, belongs to theater history as more than just a char- acter in a play.Little is known about the historical Sade’s life-long pas- sion for the theater, about his work as a theater builder and manager, an actor and director.

    NORMAN HAMPSON Norman Hampson 1922–2011 ‘NORMAN WAS ALWAYS LUCKY’, said his father when he married Jacqueline Gardin in 1948.1 Norman Hampson never doubted it, knowing that the happiest events in his life came about by chance. They left him profoundly convinced that history, too, develops by chances that historians habitually underestimate, and his deepest instincts left him sceptical of all forms of historical determinism. He did not consciously set out to be a professional historian, much less a historian of France. He was born on 8 April 1922 in Leyland and grew up in industrial Lancashire. His mother, Elizabeth Fazackerley, bore a very ancient Lancashire name. His father, Frank Hampson, was clerk to the Education Authority. Neither came from an educated background, but their efforts to compensate through their two sons won them entry to the most prestigious school in the north, Manchester Grammar School. Here Norman at first followed his much revered elder brother (who went on to become a consultant surgeon) on the science side, though all the while developing a passion for all forms of literature, from the classics, at which he excelled, down to modern English poetry. Only in the sixth form did he finally abandon science. Throughout his life he could quote pages of Shakespeare by heart, and in the sixth form he and Norman Swallow, later a pioneering television producer, established a literary magazine, Phoenix, which carried on with the help of his father some years after he had left school. Haunting Manchester bookshops on his way home, he also began to write his own poems, and even a short novel.

Yet, as I argue, this world-colonizing force is not neutral. The anticipatory projection and world-building characteristic of scientific theorization are grounded in a practical comportment, so that the essence of technology or Craft is ontologically prior to theoretical science. In other words, science is always already Technoscience.
