Fink, Chair This dissertation examines a group of four musical Passion settings, commissioned by the International Bachakademie Stuttgart to mark the 250th anniversary of J.S. Bach’s death in 2000. The terms of the commission, titled “Passion 2000,” called for each composer to choose one of the canonic Gospels and write a setting in his or her own language. They were Wolfgang Rihm, German; Sofia Gubaidulina, Russian; Osvaldo Golijov, Spanish; and Tan Dun, English. I consider these four Passions against the backdrop of two historical turning points: the end of the Cold War and the turn of the millennium. I look at the impact of these turns on the production and reception of new music, considering tensions between the rapid globalization of the post-Cold War period and the simultaneous struggles to renegotiate the terms of local or regional identities. Accordingly, I address issues of nationalism and postnationalism, globalization, and multiculturalism, while also situating the Passions within music-historical lineages and networks of influence. While the end of the Cold War put ideas about the “end of history” into wide circulation, the approach of the millennium also carried eschatological ii implications, as well as hopes for global, historical redemption from the brutalities of the twentieth century. This dissertation is one of the first studies to consider the end of the Cold War as a turning point for musical culture, and to address the millennial turn in new music. It is divided into two parts: Post-Cold War and Pre-Millennium, each part addressing two of the Passions. This dissertation brings necessary attention to the pluralism of 1990s new music, and offers an alternative interpretation to the widespread understanding of late twentieth century concert music as reflecting primarily a “postmodern” condition. Instead, I argue that the historical grandeur of the Cold War’s end and the millennial turn created a unique set of conditions in which music- historical narratives were questioned and the boundaries of new music redrawn. iii The dissertation of Stephany Andrea Moore is approved. For me, it has relied not only on those moments when I’ve clearly been engaged in shaping or writing the thing, but also those countless, marvelous moments along the way that come back a year or five years later to answer a question not yet raised in the moment of their first appearance. With this as the most honest parameter for appreciation, there is scarcely anyone I could omit. And yet there are those who, along the long way of a lifetime, have unequivocally shown up here in one way or another. Most practically, research requires time, space, and often travel. I received a great deal of help from the following: Jutta Schneider, the wonderful archivist at the International Bachakademie Stuttgart, who maintains a lovely library, was generous with documents, copies, and coffee, and made Stuttgart an excellent first stop. In Leipzig, Dr. Thekla Kluttig provided a preliminary list of possible resources at the Sächsisches Staatsarchiv there; the whole staff was enormously helpful and the documents I looked at there changed the direction of my first chapter. At the Bach- Archiv in Leipzig, Frau Marion Söhnel, a musicologist there since 1979, gave me a gripping vii personal account of the institution’s Cold War-era history. Dr. Christiane Hausmann offered additional institutional insights, made introductions, provided concert tickets, and continues to be a resource. I am also grateful to Professor Dr. Helmut Loos for the conversations, and to William Weber for making that introduction. In Berlin, I thank the archivists of the Akademie der Künste, which is as close to perfect an archive as I can imagine.     No. 4 Fall 2005 BACH NOTES THE NEWSLETTER OF THE AMERICAN BACH SOCIETY FRANZ LISZT AND HIS EARLY RECEPTION OF BACH’S ORGAN WORKS* RUSSELL STINSON In the fall of 1857, some fifteen months after the death of her husband, Clara Schumann embarked on a lengthy concert tour of Germany and Switzerland. She performed first in Dresden and Leipzig, sharing the bill with the violinist Joseph Joachim. At some point during their stay in Dresden, the two artists were treated to a performance by Johann Gottlob Schneider on the sumptuous Silbermann organ at the court church, the same instrument on which Schneider had often played for Robert Schumann. Also present was arguably the era’s most famous musical personality, who had traveled to the Saxon capital to conduct the premiere performance of his Dante Symphony. We have no idea who invited Liszt to this with Liszt and Joachim firing salvos on gathering, but it seems unlikely that either the subject of Bach’s organ works. C’est par le biais de cette œuvre qu’est explorée l’idée du dialogue musicothéologique, en proposant des façons par lesquelles la pièce musicale en question peut servir de porteuse ou d’interprète d’une pensée théologique. Afin d’appuyer cette idée, la démarche intertextuelle employée par Heidi Epstein est utilisée. Cette méthode permet de faciliter non seulement le travail interdisciplinaire, mais aussi la lecture théologique de l’œuvre musicale. Le premier chapitre explore les sources, les questions et la problématique qui entoure le dialogue musicothéologique. La conclusion tirée est que l’étude d’Offertorium nécessite une approche équilibrée. Nous entendons par cela, une approche qui prend en ligne de compte la réflexion théologique autant que la recherche musicologique tout en respectant les contributions théologiques que l’œuvre musicale peut apporter en soi.

  • Chapter Three Minimal Music
    72 Chapter Three Minimal music This chapter begins with a brief outline of minimal music in the United States, Europe and Australia. Focusing on composers and stylistic characteristics of their music, plus aspects of minimal music pertinent to this study, it helps the reader situate the compositions, composers and events referred to throughout the thesis. The chapter then outlines reasons for engaging students aged 9 to 18 years in composing activities drawn from projects with minimalist characteristics, reasons often related to compositional or historical aspects of minimal music since the late 1960s. A number of these reasons are educational, concerned with minimalism as an accessible teaching resource that draws on students’ current musical knowledge and offers a bridge from which to explore musics of other cultures and other contemporary art musics. Other reasons are concerned with the performance capabilities of students, with the opportunity to introduce students to a contemporary aesthetic, to different structural possibilities and collaboration and subject integration opportunities. There is also an educational need for a study investigating student composing activities to focus on these activities in relation to contemporary art music. There are social reasons for engaging students in minimalist projects concerned with introducing students to contemporary arts practice through ‘the new tonality’, involving students with a contemporary music which is often controversial, and engaging students with minimalism at a time of particular activity and expansion in the United States and in Australia. 3.1 Minimalism Minimalism is an aesthetic found across a number of different art forms – architecture, dance, visual art, theatre, design and music - and at the beginning of the twenty-first century, it is still strongly influential on many contemporary artists.
