2019 Parent and Family Orientation For families of students in groups 1 to 38. Your student received their group assignment at check-in. SUNDAY, AUGUST 18 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Move-in for New Students Check in at Wade Commons (E2) Upon arrival, your student will check in and receive their ID, residence hall room key and important Discover Week information. 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Open Time for Shopping or Errands (Optional) On Your Own Stop by Discover Week headquarters or use CampusGroups to find a list of local shopping areas to purchase any last-minute necessities. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parent-Student Lunch (Optional) Linsalata Alumni Center (D2) Take a break from unpacking to grab a bite to eat! 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campus Tours (Optional) Wolstein Hall (D3) Head to the Office of Undergraduate Admission to take an official campus tour. Take a stroll around campus, and experience the architecture, technology and activities CWRU has to offer. Office of Multicultural Affairs Open House (2 to 4 p.m.) Sears, Room 409 (D5) Want to get your student connected and engaged with diversity, inclusion and social justice efforts on campus while finding their home away from home? Learn more about the resources, student organizations and programs available through the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Tour the Amasa Stone Chapel (D5) Designed in the 14th-century English Gothic style popular at the turn of the 20th century, Amasa Stone Chapel boasts an impressive tower designed to be “representative of the aspirations of the university.” 3:30 to 3:45 p.m. Meet with Your Student to Attend the University Welcome Case Quad (D5) Quickly connect with your family and then make your way to the University Welcome, your official welcome into the CWRU family! 4 to 5 p.m. University Welcome Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center (E6) Join all new students and their families for President Barbara R. Snyder’s University Welcome. 5 to 7 p.m. Parent and Family Reception Tinkham Veale University Center, All Ballrooms (D4) Join CWRU faculty and administrators to celebrate the conclusion of your Parent and Family Orientation experience and beginning of your time as a member of the Case Western Reserve family. EDUCATIONAL SESSION DESCRIPTIONS Academic Resources Join members of Academic Resources for a discussion about programs and services to help students achieve their academic goals. Learn about Supplemental Instruction (SI); Peer Tutoring; Study Group +1; Spoken English programs and seminars; and one-on-one assistance with time management, study skills, test- taking, note-taking strategies and spoken English. Presenters will also discuss UNIV 100, a popular five-week, non-credit seminar to improve study skills and time management. Campus Services Greatest Hits Learn the basics about campus services: meal plans, CaseCash, car sharing programs and Bookstore Bucks. Information will be provided about the CaseOneCard and its uses, including bookstore and banking functions. We will also provide information about travel, hotel and car rental discounts for parents and families, too. Case Management Resources The Division of Student Affairs established case management, Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and CARE Management. Case Managers (non-clinical), BIT and CARE Management consist of a team of professionals from several units. This presentation will give a brief overview of these student support services, and how students, faculty, staff, family, friends or community members concerned about a student’s well-being can advocate for and support students through stressful life circumstances and other needs. Disability Resources Information Session Managing a disability and college demands simultaneously may require assistance. Talk with the Disability Resources staff to find out how students access services and accommodations at Case Western Reserve University. Learn about the differences between high school and college and what is expected from students and parents in this new environment. Experiential Education Opportunities Experiential education is an important part of the Case Western Reserve experience. Through experiential education, students are able apply classroom learning to real-world settings. Learn about the different opportunities available to students, including internships, practicum, co-ops, entrepreneurship and research. First to the Finish Line, Hurdles and All Is your student the first in the family to attend college? Or the first in their generation? Then this is the session for you! We will be talking about how you can best help your student navigate a brand new world. Understanding that everyone is not familiar with the college environment, we hope to find ways to make you and your students’ journey easier. You will learn about what it means for your student to be part of the first-generation community here at Case Western Reserve University. Got “What If” Questions? Even if you’re not a natural worrier, it’s very normal to have “what if” questions just in case things do not go as planned. Join staff from the Office of the Dean of Students as they go through a list of common questions and ways we help your student and you to navigate the unexpected. Greek Life The Greek Life Office at CWRU is committed to helping create a unique Greek experience with exponential potential for every member. Life on Campus for LGBTQ Students Case Western Reserve University was recently ranked one of the top 25 college campuses for LGBT students. What does that mean for your student? Hear from the LGBT Center leadership as well as a student to find out about resources, support, LGBTQ inclusive policies and myriad social opportunities on and off campus. Paying for College: Financial Aid and Student Financial Services Representatives from the Offices of University Financial Aid and Student Financial Services will discuss financial aid, student employment, scholarships, loans, payment plans and the student billing system. Staff will review payment due dates and answer questions on both financial aid and the payment process.
