Commodore’s Welcome

Dear Participants,

Welcome to the Engineering Sailing Cup 2019 in Pirovac from the Commodore and the organizing committee.

Back in 2018, on the flight home from Greece, we arranged a video conference for the end of May to prepare a project plan as soon as possible for the ESC 2019. Ideas and names for new routes in the Mediterranean were quickly gathered. Ibiza, Crete and Corsica were shortlisted.

The disillusionment, however, came very fast as we distributed the tender with our wishes to several charter companies. At none of our desired destinations was it possible to charter 10 comparable boats. However, there was always the feedback that this was possible in Croatia, Turkey and Mallorca. The best alternative offer we received was from the Charter Company Sarres Schockemöhle for Croatia with the departure port Pirovac. Ten identical sailing yachts of the type Bavaria 46, built in 2018, were available. Croatia is not a new area for the ESC but with the offshore island world it is an exciting and varied sailing area in every respect. We were able to convince ourselves of this in October 2018 on our reconnaissance tour. It was in 2001 that we are visited Croatia first time. Since then we have sailed Croatian waters in 2004, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2017 and we are back again in 2019. We will visit some familiar places on the way and a few places you may not have been to before.

A heartfelt thankyou goes to our sponsors, the Pörner Group that once again provides the medals and trophies in 2019 and the JD Consulting GmbH that provides our website.

Last but not least, my crew and I are looking forward to welcoming you to the spectacular sailing area in Croatia and to spend a great time with you.

Refuelling the yachts – Information from the charter company:

We advise our customers to fill up the yacht already on the day before last and to also fill up the spare can with diesel. Before the yacht is handed over, the tank is filled with the reserve can. This saves the customer a long wait at the petrol stations and allows a smooth and timely check-out.

There will be a re-fuelling facility on Thursday evening in Hramina. Before you moor in Hramina Marina we urge you to visit the fuel station in the harbour. The fuel station in Hramina is the only fuel station in the area Murter / Pirovac and is a contact point for 3 large charter bases. On Friday afternoon, therefore, waiting times at the fuel station from 3 to 4 hours can be expected. With the tank already refilled on Thursday, the boats can return stress-free on Friday to Pirovac.

Jezera is the smallest town on the island of Murter. The first settlers came here in 1298. There are many churches and religious monuments here, mostly from the 17th and the 18th century. The church of Our Lady of the Health, built in 1720 is probably the most beautiful one. Even today the town still looks like a typical Dalmatian fishing village, although it has turned into one of the largest fishing centres in Central .

Kaprije - is the only settlement on an island with the same name and is one of the largest islands of the Sibenik archipelago. Kaprije is a rare oasis full of clean air which seems to have remained trapped in the past far from the modern world. The island is car free, so it is a suitable destination for those who want to get away from city noise and give themselves a full holiday. On Kaprije there is an ambulance, shop, post office and everything else needed for a normal life and that is why it is constant destination for many sailors (like us!) who come here on holiday.

Rogoznica is a quiet Mediterranean town, whose center lies on a peninsula that is the former island of Koper, connected to the mainland by an artificial mound in the second half of the nineteenth century. Be sure to visit the cultural heritage of Rogoznica: church of St. Nicholas, church of St. John of Trogir, the parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Heaven, Our Lady of the Chapel and the remains of fortifications built by the French at the top of the town. Take a walk along the shore in the evening, visiting restaurants, bars and enjoy the fisherman’s night celebration in Rogoznica.

Sibenik is political, economic, social and cultural centre of Sibenik- county in Dalmatia, Croatia. Placed in the middle part of Croatian Adriatic coast, in picturesque, well-indented, bay in which river Krka empties. There are 42 000 inhabitants. From all other cities on Adriatic Sibenik takes a special place. While Solin, Trogir, Hvar and Vis were Greek, Roman and Byzantine’s, Sibenik is a "new city ", founded just as a balance to the Byzantine’s Dalmatia. That's why Sibenik is the oldest Croatian city on Adriatic.

Marina Hramina lies in the north of the island of Murter, sheltered in the bay of the same name. The island belongs to the Kornati islands and is an ideal starting point for sailing trips to the Kornati and Telašćica National Parks.

Safety The ESC 2019 is a fun event among good friends. Safety first for all participants

Each crew on an ESC Boat is entirely responsible for its own safety and nothing in this document or anywhere else, reduces this responsibility.

It is for the crew of each ESC Boat to decide whether it is fit to sail.

We recommend each skipper of an ESC Boat to give his crew a safety briefing covering as a minimum gas safety, location of first aid kit, and flares, boom awareness, winch operation and use of life vest and lifebelts.

Skippers should discuss the man over board (MOB) procedures. It is recommended that crews practice the MOB procedure (using a floating object).

Each skipper of an ESC Boat should make himself aware of any relevant medical conditions that any of his crew have, especially diabetes, epilepsy or heart and blood circuit conditions.

It may not be easy to get prescription medicines during the week so make sure your crew has what is needed.

Emergency calls: • Medical Emergency: 112 • SAR / Maritime distress: 195

Avoid collisions at all times.

What to do in case of damage (Information from the charter company)

• Please contact the base immediately! • Exchange insurance policy data (for liability damage) • Take pictures of the damage • Create a sketch with description of how the accident happened and let it sign from all involved persons • Create a record with the port captain • Create an entry in the log book

Sailing Instructions

Rules The event will be sailed under ISAF’s “Racing Rules of Sailing for 2017 – 2020” ( http://www.sailing.org/documents/racingrules/ ) and the Sailing Instructions in this Logbook. Any deviation from this Logbook will be announced only by the Commodore or Race Officer during Skippers’ meeting or while sailing via VHF.

Skipper’s responsibility All skippers of the ESC Boats are fully responsible for safety and good seamanship on board of their yachts in particular when sailing around islands, reefs or otherwise close to shore. Always keep well clear of shallow water. Always watch out for ferries and other sea traffic, they can move very fast.

Scoring System For scoring the Low Point System will be applied. The event will consist of 6 courses to be sailed in six days, one per day. The worst result will be automatically discarded. The winner of the dinghy race will be awarded a reduction of one point. The results will be published daily both via the Skipper’s WhatsApp group as well as on the ESC website.

Penalties and Protests The Race Officer is responsible for identifying a break of a rule according to the Rules of Sailing and will announce the penalty via VHF. The ESC Boat addressed by the Race Officer has to confirm, accept and execute the penalty. A single 360° turn will be the penalty for breaking a rule. The penalty has to be executed promptly, but within 15 minutes at the latest, and under the conditions of ISAF. Protests are not foreseen in ESC 2019.

Boat flags Every ESC Boat has its Code Flag flown from the backstay showing participation in the event. The Commodore’s boat is marked with big flags attached to the port and starboard shrouds.

Gennakers All boats are equipped with similar gennakers that may be used after crossing the starting line. Jib poles and other equipment, such as boat-hooks shall not be used to support sails. Manual holding out of sails with sheets and by crew members is permitted.

GPS Plotter Tracks The track feature on the GPS plotters must be switched on at the 5-minute signal at the latest and kept on until the finish. Tracks must be kept to be viewed by the Commodore or Race Officer if requested.

05.04.2019 16 ESC 2019 Sailing Together with Friends

Finishing procedure For the first time, the ESC 2019 claims to start as a “Paperless regatta”. For this we replace the handwritten “declaration slips” with a photograph of the plotter passing a gate and passing the finish line.

Since all boats are equipped with identical plotters, it will be possible to accurately document the passage of the “Gate-Lines” and “Finish-Lines”.

The exact position with the time can be transmitted without delay to Jörg, who will evaluate the data. For this we will set up a new WhatsApp group. On this channel, please send only the plotter photos. Jörg will enter the data in the old proven Excel spreadsheet and the results will then be distributed daily on the parallel existing WhatsApp group of skippers as well as on the ESC website.

We hope that the paperless test run will be successful, but for safety’s sake we leave the declaration slips as an annex to this logbook

The Start Procedure

The “Swan Start” is a method for starting a race without an anchored start boat. By using this method of starting, all boats can participate in the start, and all boats, including the swan, have an opportunity to start within a few seconds of one another. The fundamental concept is that all boats start on starboard tack by ducking behind a designated “Swan” after the Swan has turned onto a close-hauled port tack and has given the starting signal. The starting line is the line between the point the Swan was positioned at the starting signal and Swan . Pre-start Wind 1. Swan at approx. start location (5 Min. signal 2. Swan turns onto a beam-reach Do not follow the Swan on this course (4 Min. signal). 3. Swan tacks or gybes 4. Swan turn onto a close-hauled port tack (Start signal) 2 1

Routes All routes are defined with waypoints (WP) for the general route. Landmarks or navigational marks that must be passed from a particular direction are given in the daily route passage description. Each route will have gate lines. On crossing the gate line, the time of crossing should be noted by taking a photo of the plotter. (see also page 17) The gate line will be at 0, 45, 90, 135, 180, 225, 270, or 315 degrees direction from the gate mark which can be seen as indicated. Please ensure when taking times to line up accurately.

Shortened courses All routes have been designed with an alternative shortened course to cater for adverse weather. The shortened courses are shown as Option Green in the descriptions. If necessary, a change in the daily route course will be communicated by VHF by the Commodore
