The first author would like to thank Drs Meena Venkatraman and Karthik Vasudevan for their valuable inputs and constant encouragement throughout the project. 1 Executive summary Globally, the most significant threat to biodiversity is habitat loss caused by human activities. Establishing Protected Areas (PA) has often been a strategy to deal with loss in biodiversity. The Periyar – Agasthyamalai landscape in the southern Western Ghats is one of the key areas for biodiversity conservation. This landscape (5758 km2) with vast stretches of forests supports many endemic and endangered species. Though a large part (3054 km2) of the landscape is under Protected Area network, there is still a vast extent of biodiversity rich forests outside this network (2704 km2). Given the forest contiguity, this landscape is expected to support viable populations of endemic lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) and Nilgiri langur (Semnopithecus johnii). In addition to these, other diurnal arboreal mammals that occur in the landscape are the bonnet macaque (Macaca radiata), tufted gray langur (Semnopithecus priam), grizzled giant squirrel (Ratufa macroura) and the Indian giant squirrel (Ratufa indica). It is therefore an important site for conservation of these taxa. In order to step up ongoing conservation efforts at a landscape level, we carried out gap analysis for a community of diurnal arboreal mammals that occupy a wide array of habitats in this landscape. The main aim of the study was to identify and prioritize sites outside the current PA network that are critical for conservation of these species, assess existing PAs for adequate representation of these taxa and finally to prepare a draft of site specific recommendations for arboreal mammals conservation in the landscape. We carried out a detailed review and collation of existing information on arboreal mammal occurrence and conducted field surveys in sites where information was poor. Gaps in information regarding arboreal mammal occurrence were identified and surveys were carried out in sites which lacked information on occurrence of arboreal mammals. Several sites in the landscape e.g. Ranni, Konni, Punalur, Thiruvananthapuram Forest Division, Neyyar and Peppara Wildlife Sanctuaries in Kerala and Srivilliputhur, Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuaries in Tamilnadu lacked recent information on occurrence of arboreal mammals. Information from secondary sources were combined with information obtained from field surveys and they were used to build species distribution modeling using a maximum likelihood estimation method. These distribution maps were then used in prioritizing sites for conservation using a tool called 'Zonation'. We used 'Additive benefit function' analysis which considers species 2 richness in a site rather than probability of a single species occurring while prioritizing. The result is a hierarchical ranking of the landscape based on probability of occurrence of all species in a site. Our results indicate that a large extent (~ 1265 km2) of important sites for arboreal mammals outside the existing network of PAs. In the Agasthyamalai landscape ~ 90% of the landscape has already been incorporated under the existing PA network. On the other hand, in the Periyar landscape, 2336 km2 of contiguous forests exist outside the current network of Protected Areas. These forests are high priority sites for conservation of arboreal mammals. For long term persistence of these species in the landscape, it is essential that these sites are protected. Based on the results of the study, a working draft of recommendations was prepared which was discussed and finalized during a consultative workshop with managers and scientists working in the landscape. Some key recommendations include: rationalizing boundaries of Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary to incorporate crucial sites in Kolathupuzha range and Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary to include sites in Palode and Paruthipally ranges for conservation of arboreal mammals; a contiguous stretch of 572 km2 of high priority areas falling within Ranni, Achenkoil and Konni to be incorporated into Periyar Tiger Reserve or set aside for creation of a new PA; mitigation measures for linear barriers such as deploying canopy bridges at appropriate places to facilitate movement of arboreal mammals across the Shencottah gap, regulating traffic on roads passing through forested sites such as Angamoozhy to Vallakadavu road; habitat improvement and fostering connectivity through stream corridors in sites closer to the Shencottah gap such as in Punalur and Thenmala Forest Divisions; research recommendations such as establishing baseline population estimates and habitat assessment for long term monitoring. In Tamilnadu, key recommendations include: protection of grizzled giant squirrels outside the Srivilliputhur Wildlife Sanctuary boundary by fostering incentive based mechanism with the local farmers; dry forests of Srvilliputhur and Tirunelveli Forest Division remain vulnerable to habitat degradation due to fuel wood collection from adjoining human settlements and therefore alternative fuel resources need to be explored; private estates in the upper reaches of these two sites need to be acquired for long term conservation of these sites; in Kanyakumari WLS,

    CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE FUNAMBULUS SPP., THE STRIPED PALM SQUIRRELS 21.1 The Living Animal 21.1.1 Zoology The striped palm squirrels are small rodents with a head and body length of about 13–15 cm, and a tail which is slightly longer than the body (Plate 29). The two common species of South Asia are the three-striped or southern Indian palm squirrel (Funambulus palmarum) with three white stripes running along its dark brown back, and the fi ve-striped or northern Indian palm squirrel (F. pennanti) with two additional white stripes running on the fl anks, parallel to the three dorsal stripes.1 The most important difference between the two spe- cies is that the fi ve-striped squirrel is essentially commensal with man. It has become almost as dependent on man for food and shelter as house rats and mice, and lives in crowded towns, cities and villages where it shelters in houses, gardens, groves, hedges and in roadside trees. The three-striped squirrel, on the contrary, is a forest animal. It has a particularly shrill bird-like call which it repeats again and again, accompanied by quick jerks of its tail. Both species inhabit the Indian peninsula from the base of the Himalayas southwards, but the fi ve-striped squirrel is more common in northern India, particularly in the drier and more arid portions and extends into the dry plains of the South. The three-striped squirrel predominates in the South, and in the moister parts of western and eastern India. Both species may, however, occur in the same area.

    Sri Lanka – 28.12.18 – 13-01.19 Sophie and Manuel Baumgartner A mammal watching trip without a tour operator nor driver… We loved our time in Sri Lanka: Amazing mammals, the friendliest people, excellent food and a beautiful green and colourful country. Since we like to organize our travels in a flexible way and discover a country on our own, we decided not to plan our trip with any tour operator. We think that this report might help others to organize their Sri Lanka trip on their own and travel on a low budget. We rented a car with ‘Kings Rent a car’ and the service was good. They organised our driver license and brought us our car to the airport. We were gone within 15 minutes and met them again shortly before our flight at the airport. Unfortunately, every 4x4 car was already booked and we rented a very small car. We might have been able to drive into national parks on our own with a 4x4 but were very happy to have a small car to travel around in the end (we could easily overtake a tuk-tuk with another one on the other side). Anyway: The traffic is certainly different, and it needs continuous attention while driving, but it worked out fine for us. We don’t think it would be a good idea to drive around at night in a busy place nor did we try to drive around in Colombo but other than that it was all fine. We think that because we didn’t book with a tour operator, we were able to support many different amazing people who helped us in our trip (in nearly every place we met competent local people, who had good knowledge of mammals).

    Summary Report on the Source and Headwaters of the Godavari River, near Tryambakeshwar, India By Subijoy Dutta, P.E. Rivers of the World Foundation (http://rowfoundation.org ) Background: The Godavari originates 80 kilometres (50 mi) from the Arabian Sea in the Western Ghats of central India near Nasik in Maharashtra. It flows for 1,465 kilometres (910 mi), first eastwards across the Deccan Plateau then turns southeast, entering the West Godavari district and East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, until it splits into two watercourses that widen into a large river delta and flow into the Bay of Bengal. The Godavari River has a coverage area of 312,812 km2 (120,777 sq mi), which is nearly one-tenth of the area of India and is greater than the areas of England and Ireland put together. The river basin is considered to be divided into 3 sections: upper (source to confluence with Manjira), middle (between confluence of Manjira and Pranhita) and lower (Pranhita confluence to mouth). These put together account for 24.2% of the total basin area. The rivers annual average water inflows are nearly 110 billion cubic metres. Nearly 50% of the water availability is being harnessed. The water allocation from the river among the riparian states are governed by the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal. The river has highest flood flows in India and experienced recorded flood of 3.6 million cusecs in the year 1986 and annual flood of 1.0 million cusecs is normal. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.
