This year sees one of the greatest challenges placed in front of the NSW Folk Federation for many years. At the AGM this year the incumbent office-bearers won’t be seeking re- election so replacements will need to be found. All members of the existing committee are hoping that there is sufficient interest amongst the member- ship to facilitate this. The new Folk Federation of NSW website is going to be launched at the AGM this year. The website will include: • A calendar of events for members to put up their coming events • A page for each member to put up their bios and contact details • A place for information to be shared broadly with the membership • An online training and development facility for members where links can be placed that show any of the multitude of training videos that members may be interested in. • Space for every member who wants to do so to log in and add details. This information will be available for anyone to see but only members will be able to log on and add information. This resource will be available to the new committee and office-bearers and is an exciting advance for the members and one that could revolutionise the role of the incoming committee. It is an exciting innovation and we are hoping that many members come to the AGM to see it. It will be presented on screen so that all attending will be able to see it and see what it contains and what is available for them as members to use. It is especially hoped that some ‘next-generation’ members may be interested in taking up the baton and moving both the Fed- eration and its functions forwards. Notice of meeting including a nomination form will be included in the next edition of Cornstalk following this one. The music industry in Australia, and globally, has seen significant changes over the past two decades essentially driven by media developments. The industry has moved from a time when producing an album was virtually a financial impossibility to this time when so many have home-based studios. It’s moved from the analogue days of vinyl (not to speak of shellac), through tape to CD and now on to digital streaming and mp3’s on flash drives and other portable media. The changes have been rather bewildering. This is the time, more than ever before, for people to network and form association in the interest of getting information, men- toring, advice and getting their product ‘out there’ in the global market. This, more than any other time in history, is when ‘suc- cess’ needs to be re-evaluated and where the music industry needs to re-engineer its own future. Artists in the field can either try to do this in isolation in a highly competitive spirit or in the interest of mutuality and collaboration. It is within this overall context that the future of the Federation needs to be considered. The current concept, I believe, needs to be deeply and fundamentally revised. The committees that have taken it to this point have done what they can. It is time for a new generation to come forward and take it into a future that is so much less ‘certain’ and more ‘chaotic’ than that of days gone by. I’ll have the opportunity to put forward some further ideas in the next Cornstalk, which will be my final contribution as President. Talk to you then, enjoy your music and dance in the meantime and look after yourselves and each other. Andy Busuttil Madison Violet is the multi award-winning Juno- nominated Canadian music duo composed of singer- songwriters Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac. The group has been notable for various folk and pop award nominations and wins. Their recent single ‘These Ships’ was released on one of the largest dance labels in the U.S., Ultra Records, and has garnered over 1,000,000 plays on Spotify already. Madison Violet are appearing at the Petersham Madison Violet (Canada) Bowling Club at 8pm on Saturday 23rd September & unplugged at Humph Hall at 3pm on Sunday 24h. • The Italian Folk Music Revival
The Italian Folk Music Revival As we know, the geography of Italy was a major inhibitor to unifying the country. It also helped to create and maintain the linguistic variations from region to region, even from one town to another. It would be no exaggeration to state that someone from, for example, the Veneto, speaking the dialect of that region would be incomprehensible to someone from Naples or Palermo, or even Rome or Florence - and vice versa. This was the situation, prior to Alessandro Manzoni’s work on “I Promessi Sposi” - you will recall that the book was initially written in a dialect of Lombardy but he re-wrote (translated) it in the accepted ‘language’ of Tuscany. Of course, it then took more than a century for Italy and Italians to accept and adopt a common Italian language; the Risorgimento would have played a major role in the standardisation of the Italian language. What applied linguistically in the divided Italy also inevitably had occurred in the music of the people of the regions. It did not apply in general to opera but was and is apparent in the local music of, especially, the small towns and villages and in the mountains and valleys of the Italian hinterland therefore, the music of the various regions - the “folk” music would have developed in quite different styles from one area to another, although certain main categories, especially very tuneful and accessible ones, such as the ‘tarantella’ and the ‘pizzica’ would have spread throughout the regions of the south, as those regions were under foreign rule - Habsburg or Bourbon - and as there were, certainly, ‘trovatori’ - wandering minstrels - who would have travelled through the country areas, attending local fairs and other functions.

  • I Modena City Ramblers Nascono Nel 1991 Come Gruppo Di Fol–

The skies of the independent music world started becoming cloudy and grey and the big international predators started lining up, ready to attack. Estragon Lab and Virus Concerti, two of the agencies that distinguished themselves the most at a national and international level during the past decade, decided to join forces and by merging they gave birth to a great independent reality that goes by the name of BPM Concerti. At the root of BPM’s work there are one of the most representative rosters on the Italian independent scene and the active work towards foreign realities, as our founders Alessandro Ceccarelli and Attilio Perissinotti have established themselves as promoters in the European market. We have over 50 Italian artists we’re working with as we have a deep knowledge of the national territory and of the national music scene, planning tours of different kinds.
