2 - The CORNSTALK Gazette AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2017 PRESIDENT'S REPORT The Future of The Folk Federation of NSW. This year sees one of the greatest challenges placed in front of the NSW Folk Federation for many years. At the AGM this year the incumbent office-bearers won’t be seeking re- election so replacements will need to be found. All members of the existing committee are hoping that there is sufficient interest amongst the member- ship to facilitate this. The new Folk Federation of NSW website is going to be launched at the AGM this year. The website will include: • A calendar of events for members to put up their coming events • A page for each member to put up their bios and contact details • A place for information to be shared broadly with the membership • An online training and development facility for members where links can be placed that show any of the multitude of training videos that members may be interested in. • Space for every member who wants to do so to log in and add details. This information will be available for anyone to see but only members will be able to log on and add information. This resource will be available to the new committee and office-bearers and is an exciting advance for the members and one that could revolutionise the role of the incoming committee. It is an exciting innovation and we are hoping that many members come to the AGM to see it. It will be presented on screen so that all attending will be able to see it and see what it contains and what is available for them as members to use. It is especially hoped that some ‘next-generation’ members may be interested in taking up the baton and moving both the Fed- eration and its functions forwards. Notice of meeting including a nomination form will be included in the next edition of Cornstalk following this one. The music industry in Australia, and globally, has seen significant changes over the past two decades essentially driven by media developments. The industry has moved from a time when producing an album was virtually a financial impossibility to this time when so many have home-based studios. It’s moved from the analogue days of vinyl (not to speak of shellac), through tape to CD and now on to digital streaming and mp3’s on flash drives and other portable media. The changes have been rather bewildering. This is the time, more than ever before, for people to network and form association in the interest of getting information, men- toring, advice and getting their product ‘out there’ in the global market. This, more than any other time in history, is when ‘suc- cess’ needs to be re-evaluated and where the music industry needs to re-engineer its own future. Artists in the field can either try to do this in isolation in a highly competitive spirit or in the interest of mutuality and collaboration. It is within this overall context that the future of the Federation needs to be considered. The current concept, I believe, needs to be deeply and fundamentally revised. The committees that have taken it to this point have done what they can. It is time for a new generation to come forward and take it into a future that is so much less ‘certain’ and more ‘chaotic’ than that of days gone by. I’ll have the opportunity to put forward some further ideas in the next Cornstalk, which will be my final contribution as President. Talk to you then, enjoy your music and dance in the meantime and look after yourselves and each other. Andy Busuttil

Reviews "Imagine if the Byrds had managed to persuade Linda Ronstadt to be their lead singer - or imagine if Sandy Denny had gone to California and formed a band with Clarence White.... Imagine a voice that combines elements of Linda (passion and warmth) and Sandy (folk credibility and depth) and you have the voice of PENNY DAVIES. Yet she sounds very much like herself - her voice is uniiquely her own - with no false notes, no "bunged on" Texas twang or finger- in-the-ear earnestness. Combined this with the brilliant musicianship and arranging/production skills of the Byrdsian ROGER ILOTT - and the songwriting and perfect song selection they both bring to all their work - you can't IMAGINE anything more powerful, yet sensitive. It's folk and rock - with elements of country. It's poetry with power. It's humour and it's very Australian - yet with universal appeal..... Imagine...... !" - says a long-term fan "I could listen to them sing the telephone book" - noted folklorist, Alan Scott "Two of Australias great folk artists" - ABC radio presenter David Mulhallen “You are great performers and I can give you the greatest compliment - you are as Australian as you can get.” - Dick Smith, Australian entrepreneur & adventurer “When Macca plays you the country listens. This Stanthorpe duo has really set up a cottage industry with their prolific series of folk albums…wonderfully authentic and descriptive songs of Australia .” - Rick Jenner, Capitol News "In concert the duo enthral audiences of all ages with their natural warmth and humour and sparkling acoustic arrangements, using guitars, banjo and mandolin. Their wide repertoire contrasts powerful and moving songs of the Australian landscape and its people with light-hearted glimpses of the Australian character. They provide an amazing view of Australia and Austral- ians, with no hint of a lesson in geography, people or social issues. And yet their material is almost entirely based on those subjects theres no hype or showbiz airs and graces about the couple, theyre calm and competent performers who deliver a provocative and thoroughly entertaining show." - Bauxite Bulletin

12 - The CORNSTALK Gazette AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2017 Judy Pinder - A Folk 'Treasure' Judy Pinder was born with performance in her blood. Her father’s family migrated to Australia in 1939, from the Pinder Circus family, famous in Europe, and indeed her grand- father was a trapeze artist – part of a family act, known as the Flying Pinders. Tightrope walkers and acrobats abound in the family – although Judy prefers to keep her feet firmly on the ground. Her mother’s family came from the counties of Wexford and Meath. Her father, mother and grandparents were all accomplished singers, and she began singing in concerts at the age of fourteen. After time out to raise a family, Judy returned to the stage in 1982 and her first love – traditional music. She worked with the award-winning folk band, Loaded Dog, on the South coast of NSW over a period of ten years. She moved to Sydney in 1987, becoming part of the folk scene there, working both solo and in various configura- tions with other folk artists. She formed Triantán in 1993 which came out of both a deep involvement in the Sydney folk sessions and a fortuitous coming together of people with similar interests. Her interest in the Irish language and the sean-nós style of singing and a desire to make people aware that in these lie the origins of many of Australia’s folk songs (many of which are directly derived from Irish, Scottish and English songs of the era) inspired their material. Triantan have recorded two well-received CDs – “Triantan” and “Turn Again”. She released her first album – “Foreign Shore”, in 1996. The title, she says, was inspired by an odd dichotomy that exists in her family – the realization that, just as her families had come to a foreign country – Australia, so their home countries were equally foreign to her when she returned. Judy completed an BVA (Hons) degree in printmaking at the National Art School in 2004 and in 2009 took an exhibition of prints to Ireland as part of Gaelic Week where she also recorded the final tracks of her second CD, “No More Songs”, released in 2012 and which is a mix of traditional and more contemporary pieces. She now lives on the far south coast of NSW.

Kieran Halpin In the last 38 years Kieran Halpin has recorded 20 albums, two live DVD’s and published three songbooks with 50 songs per book. He is rightly regarded as one of the hardest working musicians with upwards of 160 shows per year. Halpin is a success- ful songwriter with many of his songs covered by other artist including Dolores Keane, The Battlefield,Vin Garbutt, Niamh Parsons, Ilse De Lange, Geraldine McGowan, Chris Jones, The John Wright Band and countless others. Halpin’s songs are performed in clubs, pubs and concert halls throughout the world. His albums are eagerly awaited by fans and media alike and never fail to generate superlatives. Never one to stand still, Halpin has always looked for new and innovative ways to present his songs. It is this fresh approach which has seen him record albums of varying styles all around the world – from a tiny studio in London, to Nashville, Tennes- see, from Dublin to Sydney and even in his own garage! 2017 sees the release of Halpin’s latest CD – Doll. It contains 11 new songs and was recorded and produced by legendary German producer Manfred Leuchter. Also featured are Manfred on accordion and piano, Yogi Jockusch on percussion, Antoine Puetz on bass and Ian Melrose on guitar and dobro. Whilst his albums are always something to look forward to, it is live on stage where Halpin makes his mark. Powerful, passionate, intimate and intense – he is impossible to ignore. His voice has such an edge to it that he sounds like he’s living every song. He manages to marry his intelligent and often thought provoking lyrics with great melodies and his now trademark acoustic guitar sound. All of this is underscored by an incisive wit and surprising humour, - very sardonic and dry – which helps an audience understand where the songs come from and hint at where they might be going. A unique writer and performer, his work is as individual as Billy Joel, Neil Finn, Joni Mitchell, Paul Brady or John Martyn. Kieran will be appearing at the Yuin Folk Club at 2pm on Sunday 20th August (Cobargo Hotel).

The Folk Federation of NSW ONLINE - jam.org.au The CORNSTALK Gazette AUGUS - SEPTEMBER 2017 13 Hello far and wide I’m not superstitious but I always travel with my Pendant. I’ve had it for thirty years. It’s not valuable in de- sign (folk) or in composition (cheap silver). It warms my heart when I clutch it as the plane takes off and lands, when I’m on long motor- way trips or in stressful situations. It holds some of the ashes of my mother, father and husband. On Monday 3rd July (my mother’s birthday) I left it in a tray at Aberdeen airport security. I’m bereft. I’m crying. I’m un- safe. On Monday I night I phone Lost and Found at Aberdeen airport. No pendant, but they’ll phone if it’s found. Same again on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overcome with imprecations against a supposed thief-at- large, I send out to Facebook and Friends with a drawing of the little object. Friday, friend of a friend has a friend who has a friend who works in Aberdeen airport, who does a deep detective job at Lost and Found. Mother, father, husband have been sitting there for a day or two. It’s back and around my neck. A storm in a teacup, I know - but it’s my teacup. And it couldn’t have been found without you. Mother, father, husband and I are grateful to those who passed the message on to, apparently, over 19,000 Facebookers. Especially grateful to the new friend who went out to the airport, picked it up and sent it to me. Glad to have been in contact with all of you. Faith in humanity restored. By the way - I'm going out on tour between October and De- cember. It would be lovely to see some of you along the way. Thanks again. Peggy Seegar (From Danny Watson)
